Use the foam pad for the dog. When I do overnights with my dog, he is a much happier camper if he can get some good sleep on the pad. He is about 80 pounds, has a great coat and really doesn't seem to mind the cold. The only time he wants to snuggle up is down into the mid 20s. Matter of fact he puts off a lot of heat when the tent is closed up. He wears a backpack too as I don't feel like carrying all the food he eats. Pro tip, use the dog backpack as your bear bag when hanging food for the night as bears love dog food.
I have almost 20 years of experience hiking & backpacking with 2 different Golden Retrievers. Suggestions: Off leash training, then you can use trekking poles. I still tie her in campsites or she would have her nose in everyone's cooking pot! Separate food and water bowls. They usually say a dog can carry approximately 20% of body weight. Water sources for Kali were abundant on this trip but carrying extra water for the dog is important especially in warmer weather. On another note I ended up buying a small free standing tent to cope with tent platforms. Interestingly I scattered the ashes of my first hiking dog on Mt. Liberty and counted it on her 48 list. Kali looks like she will become a great backpacking buddy.

Six more 4000 footers and cute little Kali gets her NH 48 hiking patch! 😊. Great video as always Taylor... a chilly night for you two, but you did it! And that sunset from the ridge looked absolutely amazing! 👍🏼 🥾
What a beautiful place! Thanks so much for sharing Kali's first overnighter with us. The sunset from the summit was special. Thank you again! Best wishes and stay safe.
Kali is super cute and seems like she did pretty great on her first overnight! As soon as you said in the 30's and popped up that foam pad I may or may not have shivered in empathy- them thangs ain't so great in cold weather with nothing else between ya gal! Beautiful views- enjoyed it
WOW I thought Kali was a small dog until you picked her up! Smartwool is the best for sleeping, hiking, chilling in! You did a great job of putting the tent on a platform! Its nice when they have the eye bolts to tie onto, and I used the little triangle shaped MSR pegs driven in between the cracks between boards. Sometimes I even had a piece of paracord tied around a big rock! Thanks for sharing, your videos are always so well done!

I have been accumulating doggie hiking gear with the aspirations of camping with my Labradoodle. My fear is that she will bust through the tent screen in pursuit of a night creature 😕. Just spent the last two Sundays up on those trails. Flume slide wasn't that bad, most of the 3.3 miles was just walking through the woods. It was only steep for a short distance. I think it took about 4 hours and 15 min to do the loop up flume slide across the two peaks and down past where you were camping. Can't wait for snow videos!!
