My mother was born at the end of the boomer generation and I am an only child born close to the end of Gen X. She was a young mother & then my dad died. My grandparents were part of the end of the greatest and also during the silent generation. They were a HUGE part of my childhood. I spent more time with them, even lived with them while my mother was in and out. She worked and got to have the life she wanted. I was raised to be independent. She retired at 42. My children are 10 and 17 and see her on average 6 times a year. I am a single mom and don’t get anywhere close to the love and support that she got with me, regardless of her current situation. She doesn’t even call. I get so envious of my peers that have parents that play an active role in the grandchildren’s lives 😞. I’ve expressed that I want my children to receive her time and could benefit from a close relationship, but that didn’t change anything.

It’s just a model for thinking but an interesting listen.
    Millennial/Gen X 1994 here.
I think we’re the sincere generation with the shadow being cruelty. My peers and I are bitter about the loss of opportunity but everyone knows the moment keys to power as passed onto us we will throw you out and slam the door.

excellent conversation. I've recently considered my own shadow in my anti authority, anti closed minded tendencies, might stem from my own shadow.

No, this is not a "distrust" in the system, just observing the reality and calling a spade a spade. If people are incompetent, gen X has every right to point it out.

Wow…what a fascinating episode! I’m of the same generation as Christian….a millennial…but early millennial. So there is a bit of a cusp with the gen x-ers. So many great ideas here…from the needs we millennials have for more wisdom and sharing from our boomer parents…to the respect and guidance from our slightly older gen x siblings and cousins. I am really looking forward to the next episode. I’m curious to hear about millennial shadows and especially curious how they affect our ability to be leaders and our parenting style. Great episode guys! Long time fan…you guys changed my life many years back to when I first discovered I am an INFJ. Looking forward to more!

CG Jung would have turned in his grave if he could. It seems that the participants of the discussion see the "shadow" in each good trait,. In this case the definition of "shadow" is not the one CG Jung had.

The shadow description of the Boomer generation is so incredibly poignant and helps me to understand my mother better. I’m a millennial/Gen Z cusp (1994) raised by two baby boomers, my dad was 1947, mom is 1956; and I cannot believe how spot on this was. I’d be interested in hearing more about studies on the dynamics of the generational differences with parenting its effects on the children of those parents.

I'm very familiar with Strauss and Howe's Generational Theory. I read Generations and The Fourth Turning about 20 years ago. I recently read The Fourth Turning is Here. Fascinating theory. I see examples of their generational personality theories in my life, my parent's lives, my children's lives, etc. I was the eighth of eleven children. My parents are first cohort Silent; the first four kids are 2nd cohort Boomers, one was sandwiched (which has really affected her sense of belonging) and the last six are first cohort Gen X. It is interesting to observe the personality of the Boomer kids and the Gen X kids and to see how my parent's attention dwindled as we Gen X'ers started making our debut. We Gen X'ers were definitely left to our own devices. Both halves are at odds with each other. The Boomer siblings still treat us X'ers as children, always telling us what to do, even though we span mid-50's to early 60's. The dynamic lives on.

Why would you SACRIFICE on the behalf of the grandchildren? Babyboomers had to FREE women from sacrifice, to FREE black people from unjustice and so on. Suddenly the X generation wants FEELINGS???

Babyboomers were not focused on themselves! They were focused on big ideas: Anti War movement, faminismus, Human rights, etc etc. How can you make these falsa accusations?
This was also the time when Anti-authoritarianism in child raising was an issue, thus the children were not "overprotected". Some might have perceived it as being abandoned.

All of this is kind of an intuitive imagination, which goes overboard sometimes. Many theories are far fetched.

  • @meinungabundance7696
    @meinungabundance7696 3 місяці тому

Consumerism? What are you talking about? Babyboomers were well educated and skilled and have achieved high positions in companies. They were independent and self-reliant.
Socialism "shadow"? Of course, a certain system was in place like in every generation.
A propos: self sacrificing: Not everybody is a "grand-parent type".

Dont push Gen X to be "mentors". You've already pushed BBoomers into it. No, they want to accomplish still many things by themselves. This is a very ideological approach: play nice, be vulnerable, be a grandparent, be mentor. NO, thanks!

Dont illustrate "the point" by extreme examples!

Sage role? With the millenials who dont want our wisdom?? No, not really.
