It's not that hated, it got fairly decent review scores when it came out, it's just wet tampons like the guy in this video that like to make crappy reviews for clicks
Well you COULD call Sonic Battle GBA an RPG because of how you collect cards and level up Emeral and if that’s an accepted definition then that would be the best Sonic RPG.
This game at it's core. Has(yes has) ALOT of potential. The touch based attacks really hurt it. Especially if your screen was really old and had dead spots. 😂 It's not horrible.
If you wish this game got the sequel it deserved (Even if this game was not fully complete) then please feel free to let Ken Penders know about it. Oh and have fun going down THAT rabbit hole 😂
I didn’t know sonic was a member of the dark brotherhood. Maybe that’s why sega makes so many bad sonic games in an attempt to silence the dreaded assassin
I played the game when I was in middle school and I thought it was pretty awesome. Now as an adult I can see it's major flaws. The game isn't unplayable but it is one of those games that (if you played it as a kid you'll probably respect it)
Fun fact: some of the music was supposed to be classic sonic songs, but they used downloaded midi from the internet 💀 you can barely recognize the final boss theme of S3&K or diamond dust from Sonic 3d blast
I played this game for the first time last year or maybe a few months ago and I had alot of fun. And I laughed my butt off on how easy the game was when I got the never miss chao for Cream cause at that point I just spammed everyone's combination attacks then Cream's refresh
As someone who grew up playing fan made Sonic RPGs and, ironically, never playing a licensed game in that genre; this game gave me the most average experience I ever had with this series. I beat it twice; once in middle school and again in highschool. I've attempted a third try two years ago and stopped sometime after failing to kill some hawks. I haven't played it since.
I actually know a lot of Sonic fans who LIKE the dark cliffhanger and I imagine Bioware thought they'd get to do a sequel. The 4th wall mess though takes all the seriousness out of it though. So dumb.
I think one of the biggest issues when it came to BioWare's writing on Sonic Chronicles is that while BioWare was in its peak during the making of this game, Sega was in its lowest point and very heavy on keeping the characters to being.. just them. I have a feeling if this game wasn't limited to DS, BioWare probably could have done some magic with this game. Although when EA buys them out was also in the middle of development in this game.. well.. yeah.
To my understanding the real reason there is no sequel is that the guy who used to write the Knuckles comic tried to sue. See Knuckle also had a sister in the comics series. he also tried suing the movie anything with knuckles family though The Knuckle clan is a part of the video games
Honestly, I played it back when I was a kid, while yes, it has flaws, but it still has a special place in my heart today. And I've definitely replayed it in the past years
I’m a bit dissapointed Sonic has been turning away from being a platformer since Secret Rings. 06 felt like the last TRUE 3D platformer from Sonic Team but they got scared of the reception so removed everything that made Sonic, well Sonic.
Blame Ken Penders for the unresolved cliffhanger. Sonic games, no matter how trash they are, always sell well and always get a sequel that usually improves upon the previous game but because Penders sued SEGA over the Dark Brotherhood characters, they decide to just cancel the series altogether.
The ideas of this game were crazy, when I got the game I struggled in the beginning for so long but then eventually learned what to do on my own, really enjoyed it and replayed it multiple times.
I saw this at a second hand electronics and collectible store. It was Bioware so I was intrigued. They want 60$ for it though, so I passed. I still kinda regret passing it up cause I haven’t seen it since. Edit after watching video: I don’t regret it anymore.
@@dantemitsoyu977 That place wanted 60$, so nah. Maybe for 5$ or even 20$, but I haven’t seen it anywhere since and I frequent a couple across Phoenix.
I adored this game as a child, it was one of my favorite DS Games ever. And I actually never thought the skill checks were hard, if you knew what was coming and had your team build up it was pretty easy most of the times, and there were combo abilities (shadow and sonic combined ability) that were an awesome idea, cool looking and very useful. So I appreciated that you didn't had to spend so much time into designing your character perfectly so you challenge every enemy, just learn a few strong abilities and that's kinda it. But the open world challenges made you swap out teammates sometime, which brought more depth into the game ...Idk why ppl hate it it was an awesome game for me (except the ending maybe)
I was so disappointed in this game. Not that I hated it but how it had so much potential and many things that were being expanded in the Sonic lore from: the Echidna race being fleshed but with new unique characters, the Gizoid (Emerl) being remembered and mentioned, the Sonic X esque character profiles and one of my most favorite Box Art key arts in the Sonic Franchise.
Hope you played this one muted. It’s one of the very rare times that a sonic games has an objectively awful soundtrack. It’s story elements and respect for the series lore/cast helped me get through it years ago.
There are so many ideas and concepts in Sonic Chronicles I like, but the actual game leaves much to be desired and the soundtrack is painful. This is a game I'd love to see a remake for one day, to utilize these ideas for a better game with a remade soundtrack, but I'm sure it'll never happen due to the legal baggage that this game's has.
This was one of the few Sonic games I stopped midway through and not bothered finishing... I reached the first planet and didn't have enough experience for Knuckles to advance in the rock planet to break a rock in the way and the thought of grinding in a game like this felt more of a chore than anything else... The game had a solid idea going on making an RPG since Mario did so various times to critical acclaim, but the touchscreen-only controls, the arbitrary Elite Beat Agents prompts, enemies running away, recycling Sonic X art for the dialog scenes, rushed art for the cutscenes (apparently it's been unearthed some awesome hand-drawn 2D animated cutscenes were gonna be put into the game, but I guess due to the rush to get it done ASAP, made them go with the boring static images in a quasi comic book format), the very obvious placeholder royalty-free sound effects, the music being rushed as Richard Jacques (known for Sonic R) wasn't given enough time to familiarize himself with the DS' music while he supposedly opted to yoink fan-made midi music of past games, the Ken Penders lawsuit with him claiming Bioware "ripped off" his stories and characters from the Archie Comics making the game now non-canon and Shade is the newest "lost" character we may never see again as Sega doesn't want to deal with his crap ever again... Bioware could've made this all work, but it's clear they were rushed by Sega (as seems to be the usual story with many games) from making this fantastic. I suppose the next best thing is to wait for the inevitable fan game wanting to unofficially pick up where this game left off and/or remake this game into something more palatable.
The move Super Sonic should return, my favorite serious Golden Boy has moves that have appeared once and never again, he also hasn't used the power of the Chaos Emeralds to their fullest.
Sonic Chronicles is kind of an "okay" game to me. Maybe that's me being too generous, however I really enjoy the story / dialogue, and I like the art for the backgrounds, characters, and items and whatnot (which I imagine is what mainly contributed to you dreaming about it). So they literally downloaded a bunch of royalty-free music and MIDI versions of existing Sonic music and used those instead. So essentially, the final game shipped with placeholder tracks.
Was hoping somebody would share this sad little fact. The music wasn't going to suck. You can tell that by some of the great original tracks the game DOES have (okay, mostly the title theme). But the omnipresent shadow of legalities caused them to literally have to sub in something that was made last minute just so the game could still ship with SOMETHING. It does make me sad because I bet the original pieces of music we were going to get would probably have been awesome, as Sonic soundtracks normally are.
The opening theme is literally one of the best pieces of music in the franchise. Just because the nocturn theme sounds bad doesn't mean this game doesn't have a better soundtrack than the first Sonic Advance.

Also, it's basically made by 1 guy (aside from the music), and, after beating it, I think it's just one of the best platformers to come out recently in general.
I don’t really have good memories with this game, the games lack of telling where you need to go always leaves me confused about where to go and frustrated and the map is not helpful, you don’t level up fast enough to where any character is strong enough for certain fights when you get to them and there are so many things you can upgrade when you do level up that it gets confusing on which one to pick, I think letting the player pick what to upgrade Is a cool concept but they just didn’t do it right, what they should have done in my opinion is kinda like what Pokémon does and have natural curves towards different stats depending on which character is leveling up, the game itself isn’t unplayable it’s just not really that fun and not worth your time
Whilst not an RPG at its core, I am excited to try out Sonic Frontier's combat system which you can upgrade over time. That may be a start towards a more RPG-focused gameplay.
as wierd as some of the decitions this game made i REALLY wish we would've gotten a sequel. Because Bioware HAS GONE ON RECORD SAYING THAT THEY WOULD'VE LOVED TO MAKE A SEQUEL. They even had some some early darfts of what the story would have been Written out.
So is now the time for some Klonoa Phantasy Reverie series? It's a 2022 collection pair of remakes for two REALLY good platformers from 1997 and 2001 with wonderful characters, story, and music! They both had manuals that helped develop the setting too. It deserves a lot of attention especially with the rise of some previously dead platformer IPs (Such as this one for 14 years) as of late!
I've tried playing it before but never got very far, I need to go back and beat it at some point. The thing absolutely hated were the touch-mini games with the powers. Some of the moves would simply do less damage or effect if you didn't get it perfect, but then completely fail and waste your power points if you didn't get the touch QTE's, which would often fail on their own despite doing them right, because touch controls suck and don't always get registered by the game.
i completed this game about 70 times as a kid and was completely unaware it was so hated until i got access to the internet
also the booklet says the game is non canon

The story behind the scenes, and how it set the stage for the end of the long running Sonic comics by Archie is very interesting.
