I've had the MIYA gouache since summer and when a few of them dried out what I did was took a tooth pick and some water and dropped water onto the dry paints, let it sit for 5ish minutes and then stirred and stirred until I got a good consistency back, it really worked wonders and my paints looked new!
imawonder I just know so many artists have said they’ll be useless afterwards so only get it if you’ll use it a lot and that’s super unfair to the paints and not giving them enough credit, they are honestly one of the most consistent and dependable student paints I have used
I also got that gouache recently and always put a piece of saran wrap between the colors and the lid so they don't dry out as quickly. Your painting is really cute, thank you for sharing :)
The two whites are different. There is Titan white for using when you want white, and White (also Zinc White for example) are meant for mixing, because they lighten up a color, without muting it to much. Mixing with Titan White may "kill" the other colors during the process.
Wow, that's very reassuring for me as a beginner artist !! Thank you for sharing this with us, when I watch a speed-painting or see a finished piece on Instagram or pinterest, this is so beautiful and perfect, it seems so easy and intuitive for the artist, the whole process seems so obvious for them ! I know it isn't a healthy thing to do to compare with others, but it's very difficult to not to... Hear that even accomplished artists can have doubts, and don't find art super easy all the time makes me feel less like a fraud lol
@@PataPtichou I was about to give up on art a few years ago because I thought I wasn’t getting any better. I just got mine a few days ago and on i discovered something! If the paints look dry, spritz with a LITTLE-ITSY-BITSY bit of water from far away. After that close up the lid tightly and when you open it next time, all of the paint looks moist and new af. Works like wonders for the next painting sesh!

I recently got these paints as well and I absolutely love them! I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like they have to go through an ugly phase with gouache before you have a finished looking piece haha. your painting turned out gorgeous!
This is the most relatable video I've seen on the subject. I'm glad I'm not the only one who goes through "ugly stages" and panics while using gouache !
I just got my set of Miya jelly gouache yesterday, and while it took me a few minutes to get used to how they worked, (I completely botched up my artwork) I just LOVED how forgiving they were as a medium. I was able to fix the issues by lifting up the paint I didn't want, and adding more, which is something I can never do with watercolor.
Just received my paint set last week, and when I tested it out I wasn’t happy at all with my piece. I’m also an acrylics gal so finding the right amount of water to add was difficult. But seeing you go through the same process with her skin and realizing it’s SUPPOSED to be ugly before it’s good makes me want to try again!
Do you recomend those for beginners?? I would love to try some gouache. Just found out about your chanel and I love it!! English isn’t my first language so I apologize for the possible mistakes
The 2 whites are different - one is a titanium white (for highlights) and one is a zink white (for mixing) Hope this helps anyone looking to purchase these
It is really amazing to watch your process and see you go from random shades on the face to an actual face!! I love it! I was thinking about buying this gouache set but I think I have a lot to learn with watercolors and acrylics before buying gouache to use rarely. Anyway, beautiful painting!! Thanks for the great review! :)
Haha half the time I'm pretty amazed myself! Oh yea that's totally fair, it can seem overwhelming sometimes switching back and forth between different mediums. I do personally like gouache more than acrylics though! Thank you so much for your lovely comment!
The lid keeps the paints pretty stable, so when painting with them I just scoop a bit of all the colors I want onto the pallet that comes with it, and then close the lid on the little tub. That way they're not exposed to air for too long and if you need more of a color it's easy to just open the lid and scoop some more out. Obviously only do this if what you're working on will take a longer time.
You've easely become one of my fave youtubers and also one of my fave artists... You're so precious and your art inspires me a to be a better artist 💕 thank you so much for sharing your art with us ❤️
I've been searching for this video! I was so excited when my gouache arrived yesterday but a few hours into painting and I felt SUPER discouraged. Knowing I'm not the only one who panics while using it and has a LOT of ugly stages before it looks good makes me feel so much better!
I typed this comment before I even finished the video lol but you are the ONLY video that mentions you won't be using gouache for final pieces, just as a hobby, which is so important to me! Recently started to get commissions and I was about to experiment by using the gouache for one and you may have just saved my ass!
Watching you paint this piece was a real pleasure and I am amazed by all the layers! I bought the 24 color version of this palette and it's my first experience with any kind of gouache. I am really enjoying playing with it, but it'll definitely take some getting used to. Right now I am using a sheet of Glad Press n Seal plastic wrap over the paints after I use them and I think it will keep them fresh for a long time!
The gouache turned into digital illustration feels 😍...so clean and amazing! Have you tried also using pebeo gouache? I wish you could make a review with it too
I love you´re articulate & honest expression of the feeling you experience as you journey through the creative process of this painting. A valuable insight into the creative process for all artists. Your artwork is beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Ahh I'm so glad!! Time-lapse videos often make it look like the process comes together naturally and I think everyone can relate to the fact the journey can be tough! Thank you so much!
Aaaw thank you!! I think the easiest place to get them is off amazon, I'm in Canada so its about $60, but it might be different depending on where you live
The price on Amazon fluctuates a little. I got a set earlier this month for $18 (US) which is I think the cheapest it gets. Maybe monitor the price for a bit if you want to snag it at its cheapest?
I have a set and I can sure tell you that they are worth it if you want to begin with experimenting with gouache for the first time, I still have the set and it helps me so much and lasts such a long time, if it dries out just add a tiny bit of water and mix.
I purchased these a few months ago but have yet to break them out to practice with them. I love watercolors and tried gouache for the first time in a scrawlrbox then in a sketchbox and really liked how they work! I thought this would be an inexpensive set to get my brush wet with so to speak! This painting turned out really beautiful Love the layering! love your technique!
I watched another video on this medium, she said she let them dry out a little, this helped them perform more like the high grade gouache when reactivated with water. She recommended letting them dry out slightly before using them.
i've been using gouache for a year or two now and it's definitely my favourite medium but it's definitely the most chaotic one too. i don't have any clue how i get pieces i like by the end when the whole process i hate how it looks until the very very end haha. i only got the himi gouache for xmas but i prefer them to tube gouache easily, even if the pigments aren't as strong the ease of having wet paint out ready to use + the huge amount of colours for the money i definitely think it's a worthy investment.
I have this set. The second white is a different pigment, it is a Chinese white. Or at least in my set. Thanks for your review, I have struggled to use my set, but you have inspired me to try them again. I just found your videos and find them helpful and informative. Thanks
i have these paints and i love them so much! everything down to the packaging is perfect and i love that it has multiple colours but also decent primary colours to mix and create your own. i do have a problem with layering these paints but i have not been painting for very long and i bought these to experiment. these are perfect for smaller pieces of artwork and they are quite easy to use :) i would recommend them
I hope you can make more Gouache or Jelly Gouache videos. There are very few youtube vids for Gouache. Your narration, tips, and style are the best that I have seen. It helps alot. I've been studying gouache for now because I'm struggling with watercolor. 😂😂 Hope to see more of your videos! 💖💕
There's a colour card (I found it in the photos on Amazon AU), and it has the colour names with pigment numbers. These look like a lot of fun and the quality looks amazing for the price of them!
Th gouache takes some time to get used to. I decided that even though that I can use then as watercolor. They are really meant to be use as a gouache. My HIMI pallet has started to dry out over a few months now. The gouache colors located on the corners and sides are more dried out, than the ones in the middle which look as if they never were exposed to air. (Run-on sentence fragments for the win.)
i just bought these paints the other day after watching a lot of reviews which ended up leading me to this video, i'm so glad i found your channel! your painting looks amazing 💞💞
I love these paints! I've had mine a few months and when I first opened them, I added a few drops of icing glycerin to each cup and mixed it in and they've stayed much closer to their original texture than other gouaches I've left out. (:
I have them and I love them. I would totally buy them again and I've been using them for everything I create this Inktober 2021. It's been really fun to try out a new set of paints. However, I'm going to write an article & create a video review about what I discovered regarding the downside to these paints.
I've already watch most of your video and I have to admit that I really love all of your works. I would really love if you would do a gouache tutorial. Not the kind of step by step as you mentioned that you're not yet master enough, but the kind of what and what not to do or some tips and tricks that you personally use. Thank you.
I bought these kinds of gouache, and I can't wait to use them. I love gouache paint and I did a science fiction picture, that is hanging in my hallway. I like your paintings and your channel. Thanks for the tips!
I believe one of the white is titanium white ment for painting directly with, whilst the other is less opaque and is used for mixing with the other colours! One white is definitely more transparent...
I bought this gouache set as a early christmas gift for myself in november as my first gouache set because of all the good reviews and I love it so much ! I got the mint colored one.
i was thinking of buying these today and yesterday i was watching your art supply haul and saw that you got these and was wondering when youd upload a review and im so happy you did today!! im def gonna buy these paints now. even though you said you felt rusty with drawing and with a new type of gouache, you art piece still looks wonderful and the way u render the face just makes me want to try and do that too. amazing video and i can't wait to watch the next one!
I love how this video shows the whole process. This actually really helped because I recently got into gouache and I don’t really know how to use it and I could see how you layered everything and the order and stuff and it was so helpful! I will definitely use these techniques in my paintings now and it’s taught me to be more patient! ❤️ love how the painting turned out!
This is G O R G E O U S!!! i watched a whole video with so much interest! i’m in love with that work and your style and i thing this is my new favorite YT account!!😻😻😻 wish you luck and i’ll be waiting for the gouache tutorials hahа☺️❤️
You could use a small palette knife, or some type of little scooper to transfer the gouache onto your palette. Just found your channel and am enjoying it, so thank you!
I love them. Just think I need to practice with them more. Natasha from Greatly Geeky on here said she thinks they’re better when they dry down, but mine don’t seem to be drying. I do live in the uk and it’s so damp here, I’m sure they’ll dry down when they’re ready lols. Thank you for the awesome video xxxx
very cool to see this process! it's really normalizing to see an amazing artist such as yourself still experimenting and figuring things out with your art as you go! I want to start painting so videos like this are really helpful for me to decide which route I should go
I've watched this video over and over, in a obsessive way lol. I am just so excited to get my jelly gouache in the mail! I got the 24 piece set that comes with a pale purple and pretty yellow green. Maybe I'll start my UA-cam channel reviewing that. AND I was so convinced I bought my little sister her own!
Wow. This is such a fantastic review. I learnt so much and will definitely be checking out your other videos! In terms of the Jelly paint I do believe I will get a palette to add to my collection :)
I just found your Ig yesterday and now I found your youtune channel and I couldn't be happier!! Love your work with gouache! I've been seeing this paints all over youtube but your video made me wanna try them now.
I have one set of gouache, it is M gram. I ordered these so I can practice and not use up all my expensive stuff. They’re not here yet, but I’ve heard good things about them. Oh, and I’ve heard about the two whites, one is for mixing and one is for highlights. Thank you forA good review!
Very helpful review. I get more from reviews that include challenges, so your honest feedback was great. I’ve ordered these and excited to try. I read somewhere that gouache is like a hybrid of translucent watercolor and opaque acrylic. For me the challenge is layering, because it’s so easy to activate bottom layers, which nonetheless don’t easily blend. Thank you for an entertaining and informative review!
Excellent review, particularly the swatch test/opacity test, since in so many ways that's the "baptism of fire", so to speak 😊 I also admire your technique using the flat/bright brush, rather than a round. Also, excellent points made RE lifting of pigment in classic Gouache, vs acrylic Gouache; I've used both since the late 90's and know exactly what you mean. Well-done! And now I'm subscribed 😊.
I bought this and tried it a while ago..man it was HARD! My medium is watercolor and trying this, was really a challenge (in a good way) probably because you can switch this medium into either watercolor or acrylic and somehow if you are really a beginner at this it would take time. She is also right with how fast these were drying. Lol i was just painting a chibi character of me and i can see how some of them are already liwing their helly consistency which isn’t a problem cause you can just mist them every now and then. But other than that i also advise that you should let them dry because it can improve their performance professionally! 😊
I just discovered your channel and I’m in love! You’re so talented, can’t wait to watch your channel grow because you deserve a million subs.!!! Hope to see you upload more (specially water colour and coloured pencil illustrations)
I have seen a lot of reviews on this paint but it never really interested me to buy them but seeing you use them and hearing your opinions on those really made me wanting to buy it 🥰😍 Really glad that UA-cam recommended me your channel .

Mine never fully dried out. And when I kept the lid on they reverted back to full jelly consistency. It might be because of my environment, though.
@@IzoInk I know at least one artist reviewed them and deliberately let them all dry out. She actually preferred them dry, and they rewet easily.

your art is literally SO GORGEOUS i cant stop watching your videos!!! been watching them all morning 😭😭💕💕💕💕
WAHH thank you so so much!
Great review than you! Lovely to see your beautiful art!
I bought this gouache set as a early christmas gift for myself in november as my first gouache set because of all the good reviews and I love it so much ! I got the mint colored one.
Ahh that’s so great!! The mint is super cute!
@@imawonder it really is! Tho that may bc it's my favorite color lol
i was thinking of buying these today and yesterday i was watching your art supply haul and saw that you got these and was wondering when youd upload a review and im so happy you did today!! im def gonna buy these paints now. even though you said you felt rusty with drawing and with a new type of gouache, you art piece still looks wonderful and the way u render the face just makes me want to try and do that too. amazing video and i can't wait to watch the next one!
Ahh what amazing timing!! I'm so glad to have helped you inform your buying decision!! I hope you enjoy using the paints!!
Thank u for this video! I have been looking through reviews and this was my favorite!
This is G O R G E O U S!!! i watched a whole video with so much interest! i’m in love with that work and your style and i thing this is my new favorite YT account!!😻😻😻 wish you luck and i’ll be waiting for the gouache tutorials hahа☺️❤️
AHH wow thank you so so much, you flatter me!! Haha yes, gouache tutorials to come one day!
I'm new and love your gouache skills. Beautiful piece!
You could use a small palette knife, or some type of little scooper to transfer the gouache onto your palette. Just found your channel and am enjoying it, so thank you!
Yes totally! I thought about that earlier today, which is funny cause I use a palette knife for acrylics, slipped my mind lol Thank you so much!!
the art is truly INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!! i'm in LOVE with your work!!!!!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
i love your videos, always so happy and positive!
I want to start painting so videos like this are really helpful for me to decide which route I should go
Thank you so much
I love your work!! Hope to have the chance to play with those guaches someday.
Beautiful work! These videos are inspirational. Only medium I’ve tried is graphite so far, this makes me eager to try new things.
AW that's so exciting! I hope you guys enjoy using the paints! You totally should!
Wow. This is such a fantastic review. I learnt so much and will definitely be checking out your other videos! In terms of the Jelly paint I do believe I will get a palette to add to my collection :)
her skin looks so freaking nice
Why is your art style so good!
I just found your Ig yesterday and now I found your youtune channel and I couldn't be happier!! Love your work with gouache! I've been seeing this paints all over youtube but your video made me wanna try them now.
AHH yay! Welcome! If you get the chance I hope you enjoy them!!
Thank you sm for this i really had no idea how it worked. I just posted a tiktok and recommend this video for people asking how to use it.❤️
I have one set of gouache, it is M gram. I ordered these so I can practice and not use up all my expensive stuff. They’re not here yet, but I’ve heard good things about them. Oh, and I’ve heard about the two whites, one is for mixing and one is for highlights. Thank you forA good review!
I hope you enjoy them! I think they're great for practice!
Yep exactly! Gouache is basically an opaque watercolour. Hope you enjoy the paints, thanks for the kind comment!
imawonder They just arrived! Gosh those lids were-fun. 😉 Now imma creating my first swatch page. This is actually fun!
I love ur art it looks so good!!😁
I just discovered your channel and I’m in love! You’re so talented, can’t wait to watch your channel grow because you deserve a million subs.!!!
Hope to see you upload more (specially water colour and coloured pencil illustrations)
AWW you’re so sweet, thank you so much!! 💖
I have seen a lot of reviews on this paint but it never really interested me to buy them but seeing you use them and hearing your opinions on those really made me wanting to buy it 🥰😍
Really glad that UA-cam recommended me your channel .
