- Surprise police say a man and his two children are dead after an apparent murder-suicide at a home on Monday. Officers were called to a home near Litchfield and Bell roads around 12:30 p.m. Monday. A woman who claimed she was going through a divorce requested a welfare check after her children were reportedly absent from school on Monday and she could not contact their father

If he was seeking help and was not violent, he would and did have the right to have visitation rights to his children. There had been no violence and therefore withholding visitation was not a thought.
Right. We need more laws on top of laws on top of laws. The judge doesn't have a crystal ball he can look into.
I think this can be hard to predict sometimes but in clear cut cases where there has been violence, many times they get visitation anyway. I am not saying to separate the kids and parents forever. Just make extra sure that they are not so severely impaired that this seems like an option.

Yes, but police don’t know if revenge was the motivation. The ex-couple supposedly got along fine and were not battling each other. Neither the mother, nor the system, thought he was capable of this awful tragedy. Parents aren’t instantly denied access to their children just because they’re being treated for depression, anxiety, etc.
I am so sorry for this poor mother. The courts should be held accountable for these incidents. Putting these children in harms way is not acceptable. This man should never have been allowed to have unsupervised custody.

Supervised visits are not the answer. There are cases when the person supervising the visitation is also murdered, along with the children. Let's stop pretending there is value in forcing children to spend time with abusive people. No other person would ever be required to spend time with people who have harmed them, yet we pretend that somehow kids need parents that hurt them.

Nearly a quarter of Americans have received a mental health diagnosi!s. Responsible people attend counseling for it. Some even need medication. many people with a history of head injuries show symptoms similar to mental illness. Neither are reasons to remove children from the home, or prevent them from seeing their children unless their mental health isn't being managed.
The most dangerous people are those who are clearly symptomatic, but refuse to seek help, or stay in treatment. Not those who cooperate in their treatment. This father obviously fell out of treatment. The Courts needs to make it easier for parents to bypass HIPAA laws in order to receive updates from their spouse's case management team or mental health professional, anytime that children are involved.
I have mental health issues and I had custody of my son I'm the best mom that I've ever known I've been to parenting classes and everyone said I was a great parent and I would never even think about doing something like that in fact I pushed for my son's father to be in his life.. Just because you have mental health issues doesn't mean that you can't be a good parent

Here in Australia, if you been a lowlife too your partner you don’t get visitation rights. We are getting stricter with Domestic Violence. And they look after DV victims way better than 30 years ago. We have had too many murder suicides lately thou . I hope mother can live with a broken heart 💔

His FB page shows a ton of photographs from what appears to be a happy family. He was an avid church goer, and some posts were him and the kids out shooting guns, including AR15, how about removing guns from someone who is undergoing mental health treatment?
That explains a lot with what you found out about him. But if we're gonna remove guns after a person is diagnosed with a mental illness, and not just when they are suicidal, then they also need to be removed from every church goer.
His mental illness isn't the single reason why he killed them and himself. It was due to religious influences and beliefs, in that he's the father, so he "owns" both wife and children. In his mind, the wife shouldn't be allowed to divorce, and since she wasn't subservient and divorced, he chose the ultimate revenge against her.
I've notice a spike in these types of murder-suicides for almost a decade, and especially since the pandemic. It was around the same time that the religious nutters began their white christian nationalist BS and preaching how wives and children are property.

HE still gets visits but the children are safe. The children are pawns…they are always used to get back at the spouse one way or another. Very sad but could have been avoided.

First of all… life is hard and no one gets through it without support from loved ones…. Mental illness doesn’t mean you are going to hurt your children….. most people I know or have come across in my daily life .. have in fact gone through difficult situations and needed support…. There’s no shame in needing help ESPECIALLY nowadays when you can’t afford to even live without working 3 jobs…. Point is… everyone either has or will go through a difficult time in their life. Two tragedies in Surprise in one week! What the hell?
A man in Utah killed his son and himself over the weekend also. It seems like every week, we hear not one, but 2 stories of spouses that commit murder suicide involving their children. Shooting your 6 months old son is beyond mental illness imo.

People are so demanding of one another and careless with words and actions. Push out rather than push through. Life is hard enough...you got to know what you are living for and extend that inclusively. Too many people refuse to be accountable for their emotions and that is so dangerous. We are conditioned now in the most inhumane manner to take everything until it's gone. It's a different war. Whether there is too many people, or not enough resources, or not enough well meaning people, I guess we will find out.

Of course I don't know, but I've heard so many stories of people on psych drugs becoming homicidal / suicidal. It seems like many times, the mental health issue is in the drugs.
The same happens when going off the psych drugs.
It was the psych drugs for teenage depression, that caused my nephew to become paranoid schizophrenic. He's now in mid-30s, and delusional. My sister and her husband take most of the care for him. Pathetic system of NONhealth care!
With my doctor’s help I got off all my medication in November and I’m doing better than I have in the last 12 years! Depression is a real bear, but sometimes the medication causes even more problems.
I knew a woman who was given antidepressants because she was very depressed battling cancer for the second time. She told me the antidepressants made her feel numb. She didn't feel happy or sad. She felt nothing. She opted to stop the drugs. She said she'd rather feel sad and deal with her situation than feel nothing. If you can't feel it, you can't heal it. These drugs are prescribed too freely without little oversight or counseling. Also, the vast majority of people dealing with mental issues are not dangerous but some clearly are. Why was this man given unsupervised visitation?

Where did you hear that she called 911 all those days? She didn't. She called the police for welfare check on the Monday the kids missed school. A welfare check isn't a 911 call.

@@UnderstandingDarkness There are many, many ways to end up with mental health issues, far beyond a chemical imbalance. Think of the soldiers who come home with PTSD. Or, head injury victims. Or, addicts. Or, those suffering from violence. or, or or. It's an epidemic.
And if you want children, choose the father carefully. The red flags are always there. Don't ignore them.
Were I having a crisis I would want this officer. Yeah law enforcement iasn't precise & it's a learning curve. I commend this officer for trying his best to help all parties involved. Most of us are so lucky we don't have things like this to process at the end of the day!

If he was in crisis, then CPS should have ordered supervised visitations even if it were a friend or other family member. He should not have been alone with the children until the divorce was final, and he had passed proper evaluations. He's a coward for taking his children's lives. It's one thing to kill yourself in a way that doesn't directly harm others. Those of us who have been there know. But you don't take anyone else with you. Otherwise, you are a murderer.
He just had some "mental health issues". That doesn't mean he was considered dangerous.
CPS doesn't protect children though. That's not their business.

My sympathy goes out to all those who are suffering due to this terrible, tragic incident.
As much as I want to feel bad for the father and understand I just can’t. Give those children a life, don’t take them with you. They haven’t done what you’ve done, experienced what you’ve experienced, or lived your life. They had so much life left to live and it’s taken away because you wanted to make sure they were with you in the afterlife. They may not have understood you now or ever but I’m sure they would’ve recognized you were struggling and made the best decision you felt possible at the time. Doesn’t mean they wanted to be apart of that decision.
