- Well, the weeds have taken over. We try to be natural as we can with weed control, but the poorjoe has taken over. 2, 4, d-b is what we are spraying at a rate of 1/2 gallon of 26% herbicide to 25 gallons of water. That may be a little light, but trying not to kill the Big Bluestem.
I feel your pain.
Weeds are evil, LoL. Dormant seed beds suddenly can come alive. It’s a constant battle here too.
We had just a smidge of fox tail in our main hay field last year, not enough to concern me much. This year I am much more concerned. It’s not an infestation but I can see where this is heading. Foxtail and Deer Tongue is my arch enemies here, at the present. Who knows what is in the seed bed waiting to show up next year? It’s a battle.
If someone casually looks at a premium bale of hay and don’t stop to consider the sweat equity and time/funds that went into that bale, well, they need educated I guess.
24D still works for us on some weeds, some not. We went with Crossbow this past spring/early summer and it’s helped. But there’s always tomorrow’s weeds.
Our best to you Sir and Mrs Sally. Yall are fantastic!
@8thdaychronicles we are doing well. I'm just disappointed. The work we have expended paid off for the first cutting, but dang it on the second.
I feel like the seed bed was the culprit. We turned the dirt over and fertilized, planted seed, but the hot and dry spell sent the new grass to sleep too quickly. We are putting lime down again this fall to move the Ph closer to 7 (6.0 now). I think that will help, but a few tons of fertilizer is in order for March if possible.
How are Susan's chickens? Hope they are doing well, Sally says Hi!
@@tommywise1702 The new chicks are no longer chicks… they have grown like weeds, no pun intended! lol
Hang in there, herbicide is your friend in that situation. Been there too. With your hot summer temps yall might be better served with a warm season variety hay grass like the big blue stem you planted some of. Several good varieties of warm season hay grasses as I know you already know of.
All your work will pay off, just hang in there!
I wish you all the best!
@@aliciahaney9244 spraying again Monday.
I know another Joe that ain't worth a tinkers damn.
