One of the hardest hitting quotes in this whole shit “they make movies for specific audiences as opposed to just making good movies”. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But that quote is also bullshit because how can he speak for everyone as to what a good movie is? Movies are an artform and are is subjective. You can put 1000 people in a movie theatre and show them all the exact same movie and each of those 1000 people are going to walk away having a different experience to the people sitting beside them. Guess what, there are people out there who do not like The Shawshank Redemption, or The Godfather, or The Dark Knight, or A New Hope, I can go on and on. There is no such thing as a good or bad film because what is considered good or bad when it comes to something subjective like film, music or more traditional forms of art like a drawing or painting is all in the eye of the beholder.
@@isaacbeeby2528 You're taking the quote out of context and pretending like it means a specific thing when the context makes it clear that it doesn't. Essentially, you're strawmanning him, whether you realize it or not. What he's talking about when he says "making movies for specific audiences" is the compulsion to just PUT BUTTS IN SEATS rather than tell a story. Obviously all movies are made for specific audiences; you know it, I know it and it's very clear he knows it. It's about the art of filmmaking turning from "how to tell the best story with this material" into "how to trick people into the theater while avoiding the hard storytelling work." Again, context makes this clear.
Yet when people make movies catering to minority groups that aren’t good, the reaction is that the movie is a masterpiece and everyone who doesn’t like it is a horrible piece of shit

What’s even more sad is that the film industry nowadays depends too much on streaming services. They allow a movie like The Irishman play a few days in the cinemas and then it’s only available on Netflix. It’s a shame because films like The Irishman or Dune which came out a while ago are meant to be experienced in the theaters not just at home. I understand that things have changed due to COVID, but this whole ‘straight to streaming services’ thing was going on even before the pandemic. Probably because of what Mackie said at the end; why go to the theater when I can have a theatrical experience at home with my big screen tv and speaker system and streaming service? Especially when I don't have to deal with rude patrons or potentially getting infected with covid?
Cinema should be optional, not everyone likes it and making those people wait 3-6 months before they get to see it just because someone is nostalgic about cinema is nonsense. Many of us have just as good equipment at home, surround sound systems, projectors or huge screens, 4K, HDR, and so on. Plus we have good comfortable seats, cheaper snacks, the ability to pause and go to the bathroom, good food, and no noisy brats kicking our seat, no germ infested dirty room you pay to get herded into like cattle, home is much better for a lot of us. Besides, there are loads of people that have difficulties with crowds that are being discriminated against if no alternative to cinema is being provided. There is no experience that only cinema can provide, and the experience cinema provides is often much worse than watching it at home so expecting people to pay $20 in order to watch it with a ton of people we've never met is absurd. THAT is an experience only CINEMA can provide. As you said you shouldn't force opinions, so I won't do that because everyone is different. Tbh tho it's not as simple as that. My idea of a good movie might not be someone else's cup of tea. Most movies have a target demographic in mind. Horror movies aren't made for light hearted people, and rudimentary educational movies aren't made for adults. The issue is that these companies cater to outsiders who don't support their content and in turn neglect the fans who were there since the beginning. The people they cater to are looking for someone to endorse their agenda and when someone doesn't cave they bully and harass in order to scare these industries into submission.
What's sad now is people who still want to make great movies, or those who are still doing so, have their films advertised less, or shown a film festivals. There are so many great films that come out every year, but companies won't advertise them because they haven't been designed to make money. If your film is great, word of mouth will spread and people will go and see those movies, but now companies have to manufacture Hype, and reviews, and spam adverts on "films" that are effectively theme park attraction.

This is the perfect time to start a new production studio, away from all the BS that Hollywood is spewing, keeping it real with producers like Martin Scorsese, Michael Mann, The Nolan Brothers, etc... and getting back to good ol' original storylines.
I remember seeing Eddie Murphy in Trading Places for the first time on the big screen. Trading Places would DEFINITELY not get made today. One of my favorites.
I been working in the film industry since 09. I've worked with many of your favorites A actors. I had a chance to work with Anthony on triple nine. He couldn't make it to the wrap party so he had his own mid wrap party that he paid for out of pocket. The one thing I can say about Anthony is that every person that walked in that party. No matter if they were important or not. (Grip, Electrician, Ad, Pa, Security, Teamster, Janitor). He took time to spend with everyone that walked threw the door. In my 9 yrs and over 30+ wrap parties I've been to. I never seen an actor take the time to welcome Everyone individually and actually spend time with everyone. Usually Actors hang with other actors or important people. Also I remember we were filming in the projects in Atlanta. Very bad neighborhood and a little kid ran up 2 Anthony and said let me see your gun. (Triple Nine was a Cop Movie). He pulled the kid to the side and said Look. That last thing you need to worry about is a Gun. What you need to worry is how your gonna get yourself and your family out of these projects. He is really a standup Human being and wish their were more actors like him.

They make movies for the audiences that are going to see them and for people who won't notice or care if the movie is actually good. 16 year olds are not sophisticated enough to recognize a shitty movie from a good movie. They don't pay attention to how good the writing is or really even how good the acting is. They just like jokes and action sequences. The older you get the more you can tell when a movie sucks.
@@J33-k3s Filmmakers used to make good movies for the sake of the craft, we call them "classics" now because we respect them. Average movie goers couldn't write essays on what makes a good movie, but they mostly know it when they see it.

Ex Machina and Her are also movies I would consider masterpieces, and I don't think those qualify as your typical mindless blockbuster. Raiders of the Lost Ark is my favorite movie and admittedly has plenty of action sequences and wit like you mention, but come on, you can feel the passion radiating from it. I am sick of remakes. The original movies were phenomenal. A remake doesn't make the movie better. Hollywood, stopped coming up with new ideas. That's why I stopped going.
Christine Yamaguchi they never had any ideas they stole ideas from other people! Most of their so called movies have the same themes. They have the hero or hero’s come to the rescue and save the city/world from a evil monster or something else. They rely heavily on ridiculous special effects and destruction of cars, cities and people to keep people’s attention from noticing how meaningless the story lines are! They always fall back on the murder plot and have to use exaggerated gun violence to relate to the masses a false sense of how life really is. I am so tired of war movies, cop movies and end of the world movies! They don’t even use American actors anymore seems like everyone has to come from England or Australia! The Hollywood movies suck!
He used what star power he had, using the genre of superhero films/shows, to really say something about race & society with "Falcon and the Winter Soldier", - that took a lot of guts and commitment, and I have nothing but props and respect to Mackie and the directors/writers/producers of that series for that- GREAT show
I couldn't agree more. That show doesn't get enough credit for the important things at had to say and people are writing it off as the worst marvel Disney+ show only because it didn't have enough crazy superhero spectacle like say Infinity War
No one agrees on anything anymore. Whatever they put in or don't put in a movie will offend SOMEONE. If they made the Goonies today, people would complain that it's too white and American-centric. If they add minorities and foreigners you'll have people complain that it's pandering to the SJWs. Everything is controversial now.

Two things killed the Hollywood star. Pirating and CGI. CGI is actually a growth in movie making caused by pirating. When the industry started losing millions, due to pirating, it had to create a formula to combat it. That's why most big budget movies are 3-D models. You can't pirate that experience. This has driven the super hero, animation and sci-fi genres to the forefront and hence, we are victims of the good subplot or story telling of yesteryear Hollywood movies. We only have us to blame. Think about that next time you buy a bootleg dvd or stream a movie to your TV from an illegal app.
It's about the art of filmmaking turning from "how to tell the best story with this material" into "how to trick people into the theater while avoiding the hard storytelling work." What’s even more sad is that the film industry nowadays depends too much on streaming services. You have no idea how happy I was to watch Dune in the cinema.
I get that it was a big thing back when cinema was the only way to see a movie, but those days are long gone. If you want that experience then go see a play or something instead of trying to force your cinema on those of us that much prefer to stream it.
@@daniel4647 you are doing exactly what you say someone shouldn't do: force an opinion on someone. It is your opinion that there is no experience that only cinema can provide and that it is worse than streaming, yet you are formulating it as if what you are saying is a fact. No. It's just your opinion. For some people the cinema experience is one of the best out there. Some people love to see art on the big screen. Some people, including myself, love the experience of being hyped for a movie, waiting for the ticket sales, getting the best seat, waiting in anticipation for days, then finally going to the cinema, buying drinks and snacks, sitting down in the theatre and watching art in front of their eyes, being totally imerged by the grand visuals and bombastic sounds. THAT is an experience only CINEMA can provide. As you said you shouldn't force opinions, so I won't do that because everyone is different. I want to at least give you an understanding that some people prefer cinema above all other movie experiences, so it is frustrating to see you forcing your own opinion as if it is a fact
And now a year after your comment streaming services (or hbo and netflix at least.) killed animation overnight for a tax refund, with no way to watch the shows without pirating. (course not all of it but it was a dick move on the companies part)

"They make movies for specific audiences as opposed to just making good movies."
Right there, that's exactly it. This last decade this problem has gotten progressively worse. The exact reason Disney Star Wars failed so miserably.
100%

The Chosen Won 1 Thanks for sharing that. Respect to him.
WOW
That doesn't surprise me one single bit. He seems genuine to the core.
Love him
That's whatsup
This is literally where Tarantino got his talking points about the Marvelization of Hollywood. And he’s being called a racist? How?
They're just mad because he makes politically incorrect movies with ACTUAL strong female protagonists.
Everything Tarantino does is the good opposite of what Modern Hollywood does.
because he's white, obviously
Exactly, my friend! People got fucking mad on social medias when Tarantino made this exact point about Marvel actors not being movie stars but he was damn fucking right ! And after he did,Chris Evans himself acknowledged he was right. Cos they know what they're talking about.
Anthony Mackie is my new MCU favorite character. Disney and Marvel Studios must listen to this man.
Unfortunately no because disney will do anything to get as much cash as they can.
Falcon has always been my favorite.
Anthony Mackie is not a MCU character
@@vaasmontenegro3993 He's the falcon apparently so yes he is. I don't care about MCU I haven't seen even a third of them, but it took me like 15 seconds to search.
Thats what im saying to my friends too, in the past you had movies with sense like you could find couple bad ones but majority was average and up, nowadays its full advertisement, hype and a ton of crap movies and then you have couple old titles that are getting remaked or milked by getting up to 4-5 movies on the same one till they kill it.
Never had an opinion about Anthony but after seeing this, I respect the guy.
Same here
He’s really one of the smartest and most aware actors out there
Perhaps, but I think this was a bad take. Very self centered and trying to take back credit for good actors over a good story.

"They make movies for specific audiences, as opposed to just making good movies" 2:12
THAT, is the most important line in this imo
They make movies for the audiences that are going to see them and for people who won't notice or care if the movie is actually good. 16 year olds are not sophisticated enough to recognize a shitty movie from a good movie. They don't pay attention to how good the writing is or really even how good the acting is. They just like jokes and action sequences. The older you get the more you can tell when a movie sucks.
@@J33-k3s Filmmakers used to make good movies for the sake of the craft, we call them "classics" now because we respect them. Average movie goers couldn't write essays on what makes a good movie, but they mostly know it when they see it.
@Jeff S. It really depends. I'm 15 and have been passionate about cinematography and editing for a long time now. Marriage Story came out recently and I absolutely loved it. Action and wit is always appealing when it's done right.
There are still plenty of great movies coming out today man.
@@J33-k3s That is so spot on, I'm 26 and only since a few years I am able to tell when a movie is insulting my intelligence just to take my money. Maybe because there are more and more of those too, but point is, most big production screenwriters don't put in the effort anymore, at a point where it seems impossible for them to get away with being so greedy and lazy at the same time.. And yet, most teens don't notice how hollow, inconsistent and boring these movies truly are, and we get yet again, insulted by a turd like the star wars sequel for instance, which is supposed to be for ALL fans of the franchise.. I don't get it, it's just sad.
I am sick of remakes. The original movies were phenomenal. A remake doesn't make the movie better. Hollywood, stopped coming up with new ideas. That's why I stopped going.
Same, most remakes are trash, rarely any are good
@@gxldboyj6523
That's true, old classic movies are always hated by everyone.
Remakes can be good, like really good. But remakes can also be BAD!!!
@@CT-Irodion they COULD be good when done sparingly but the constant reimagining is stale and soulless

The average Hollywood movie today (in this era) are Remakes, Sequels, and Bio's.
WOOSH
The Hollywood movies suck!
and you missed woke propaganda....
You forgot cheap gimics of today or rom comedys.
I did like that show, but the Flag Smashers were really BAD...
So badly written.

Politics
No one agrees on anything anymore. Whatever they put in or don't put in a movie will offend SOMEONE. If they made the Goonies today, people would complain that it's too white and American-centric. If they add minorities and foreigners you'll have people complain that it's pandering to the SJWs. Everything is controversial now.

After hearing Anthony Mackie talk about this, I have huge respect for him. I never really liked Falcon as a character, but I appreciate Mackie’s honesty about target audiences, remakes, streaming, etc. Everyone knows it, but they’re all afraid to say it out loud. So I really respect Mackie’s “I don’t really care if they’re offended” attitude.

@@thenewtheory idk if thats all him though. As a huge fan of the books they butchered the 2nd half of season 1 and season 2 has just been bleh. I couldn't even force myself to finish. Idk they went too far away from the books for me to be invested and took an awesome cyberpunk sci fi noir setting with tons of lore and made it rather boring.
