A phenomenal performance in true haydnian style. And the "andante" is miracolous indeed.

Performance absolument incroyable ! Merci infiniment !

I guess Toscanini has to fit the movement on one side of the 78 rpm. really fast.

If I had to dance to that minuet, I would definitely get winded. I tried it at a playback speed of .75 and it sounded really good!

And yet, William Malloch did a survey of tempo markings left by editors/arrangers who were familiar with Haydn-- Hummel, Czerny, et al. Toscanini's Surprise was virtually the only recording of any classical symphony that met those instructions. There were many varieties of Menuets in those days, and the more rustic ones could be quite fast, and were to be counted in one, not three. (See the [scherzo] of Beethoven's first for an example.)

This has to be one of the most brutal, wrong headed, and umusical travesties I have ever heard; the tempi, with the exception of the Second Movement, are preposterously fast. As Sir Thomas Beecham remarked about Toscanini: "Bah! That bandmaster!"

Beecham capisce poco di musica.... figuriamoci di Toscanini

Sorry, you don’t have the least idea of what you are speaking about. A pity.
