At this stage and age of Maynard's life Patrick was playing both lead and several of Maynard's parts. They were still traveling and playing as much as usual and Maynard could still play double high C's, just not all night long so Patrick helped out. Considering, Patrick was tired as hell
Wow this medley sounds nice and patrick is nailing all the solos and was brought up by maynard amazing lit music my dreams of playing high and being a king
Patrick may have some skill, but I have to say this is one of his best vids (from what I've seen). If anyone knows a non edited vid of Patrick not being screechy, plz post it, cause I'd rather not have to consider him all screech if possible
i agree completely with you and enlitened1234. If pat is brilliant where are the vids showing that off? Maybe he's good live, can't say and don't think I'd ever pay to hear him As far as being THE lead player for Maynard... are you kidding? Patrick isn't even close. He's got chops yea and this video he sounds like he had an off night but for the most part he's tasteless watch Gonna Fly Now from the Maynard Tribute. Bergeron and Miyashiro lay down some sweet solos and pat jus spews his garbage.
Maynard had the sound. I like Pat Hessions personally. Strong lead player, but his tone isn't as dynamic as The Boss. Plus he fiddles with the notes too much. Macarthur Park needs to be be played with drama. Not to show off skills. If played with feeling and without excessive doits and shakes? It will showcase the soloists high note skills well just by being played straight.
Patrick is probably getting paid a little bit more than $350 a week, enlitened, otherwise i don't think it'd be worth it lol, he definately had an off night but he has a really bright tone and i don't like wat he did with don't let the sun go down on me.
Maynard must have been trying to make a living at this point. Definitely, not Stan Mark and Maynard's 70's- 80's horn section. But nevertheless, Maynard loved to help guys get into the business! A valiant effort!
Chris Pettus honestly tho, he pretty much nails everything excerpt for the double c he misses at 6:28. Everything else sounds pretty acceptable, Hell I couldn’t last like that I honestly love the rawness and intensity of his lead trumpet sound
Patrick Is a great musician and lead trumpet player. To play MF's lead book for 5 years is amazing! Maynard even mentioned Patrick's role continued to improve. I wonder why Maynard selected him to be on his last recording. Enough said....
Hession's sound reminds me of a high school freshman standing in front of a mirror in the 80's trying to play like Maynard Ferguson.

i wish he hadnt died....i miss him, he is such an inspiration

Wow!
I really like the transition from Gospel John into Dont Let the Sun Go Down on me. These are all amazing songs :P
Sensacional ...
Só quem tenta sabe o quanto é difícil esses agudos no trompete. Parabéns !

Patrick is fire!!
Uh, Pat sounds pretty good on this to me!!
i'm not a fan of Pat but check him out playing lead on But Beautiful at the Sweden concert. One of the better vids of him
they are rushing at 2:03
what's the tune from 3:45 on?
It's the continuation of Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me.
wow...they couldnt find another lead trumpet??thats kind of hard to beleive
Ahh, the old, "bend over at the waist" trick, which means "we really don't have the control to decrescendo or play at more than one dynamic level."
Everyone knows Patrick Hession. Who were the other two trumpets?
Kurt Thompson and Carl Fischer. Carl Fischer playing with Billy Joel on tour.
patrick upper register sounds relly itchy if u know what i mean ;\... i dont hate him tho. to get a job with maynard you had to be good

Too bad in the end he had to let the sidemen play his parts

Not too bad, but Hession cracked and messed up a little. I really liked the trombone solo.
It looks like they are performing in front of a corn field...
maynard looks worn out at this point in his career. either that or he wasnt having a great night.

seemed like a bad night for hession
Not bad for a guy who's lung collasped and couldn't play for six months
Who?
Lip trill.
Chameleon
I felt bad for the crowds ears at 8:34. Patrick hession has no taste and sounds crappy!
Well, if sound, interpretation, style, accuracy, and musicality weren't important, you could say he's great.

Hession definitely had an off night this night. I saw him live with Maynard in 2006 shortly before Maynard passed and he was pretty great that night.
