In November 1984, whilst serving in the Royal Air Force, I was sent to RAF Laarbruch from the UK, as part of a 3 man team. Our task was to set up a public address system at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery at Reichswald Forest. A Remembrance Parade was to be held there and the PA system was needed so the Pardre's words could be heard by everyone in attendance.
On the morning of the Parade, roughly 08:00hrs, we checked the system was operational, as we had set it up the previous afternoon.
My lasting memory from this visit was how deathly quite the cemetery was. There was no bird song in the trees surrounding it, it was dead quite. But most hauntingly was that a ground fog had blanketed the bottom three-quarters of the gravestones , covering the names on them, only leaving the unit badges showing.
40 years later and it still sends shivers downg my spine thinking about it.

Knew an american medic who was wounded in a half track before he crossed the rhine river into germany. He had a metal plate in his head from it.

"Gear up" so they grab shovels. Then when they find something: "Hey Roy, open this up for us." Like it matters who opens it up when you are that close. lol
Love the series, but sorry that helmet was planted prior to digging, i have never dug up a helmet looking like that, it has been cleaned from rust before it was buried again
Yes I've heard many stories listen to a lot of World War II interviews and they didn't want to report the injuries because they didn't want to lose their men
