  • Happy new year 2018. Me and my brother Ralfy decided to celebrate it by eating a Russian military MRE (Meal Ready to Eat).
    Ralfy's channel is at:- / ralfystuff
    If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
    www.bigclive.com/coffee.htm
    This also keeps the channel independent of UA-cam's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

    The complete lack of chemistry is delightful. You've got Clive the mad engineer just ripping stuff open and talking to himself, occasionally remembering to talk to camera; and Ralfie the serious reviewer always talking to camera, immediately describing the tastes and aromas. Wonderful that the algorithm seems to be obsessed with the Big Clive back catalogue at the minute.

      It's not Ralfy's fault that crackers, plain.. neutral.. interestingly a different taste from many British crackers are infact oversalted... because of cultural expectations!!!

      @Matrix29bear They're such opposites. Ralfy would drive me nuts if I got stuck next to him in a bar somewhere, but Clive is so quiet and funny (without realising it) he is much more watchable. Hilarious viewing, but the food review was a bit of a train wreck!

    I'd recommend learning the Russian alphabet, because a good number of words (especially modern words) become understandable when you know how to pronounce them. Take the word сахар, for example: 'с' is pronounced like an "s", 'а' a bit like the 'a' in "father", 'х' is pronounced like the 'ch' in "loch", and the 'р' is pronounced "r". Now, transliterating it becomes "sakhar" (where the "kh" is pronounced like the "ch" in "loch" - to avoid confusion with the "ch" in "chat"), which is already close enough to guess "sugar" in the right context.

    • @daanwilmer
      @daanwilmer 6 років тому +33

      Also, you can then read the large "Ruskii Standart" label on the vodka easily.

    Grits are the inside white part of the corn kernel. They don't have a lot of taste but with the right amount of salt, pepper and butter they are good. They are most found for breakfast in the south east U.S. They are little known outside what was the Confederate States in the U.S. Civil war. They are best on a cold morning being being hot (Temp) and filling. They are usually served these days with eggs, toast, and sausage, ham and or bacon. They have the consistency of what I imagine Mush or Porridge is in Britain (having never had or seen Porridge when in Britain).

    • @MikeeVee

      No that is corn meal or if you are Italian Polenta (SP?) It is the same consistency as Polenta made but the chefs on the Food Network. We and any other Italian families made Polenta is made much more firm cut in slabs with cheese and sauce. For breakfast the slabs are fried in Olive oil coated with cheese. I think the inside part is called hominy (SP?) as there full name is Hominy Grits.

    • @MikeeVee
      @MikeeVee 6 років тому

      Bill S yeah, that makes sense, when I read the Google search it showed two kinds of grits, either coarsely round corn or hominy with the germ removed.

Surprisingly Tesco used to sell Soyuz-Victan Admiral (which is definitely top-of-the-line!). Your Russian Standard's more of a Siberian tipple - if you want to try what Muscovites drink - Moskovskaya Osobaya (dates back to the time of the Tzars!) - should be available in the UK, and if you visit Moscow you can buy small bottles at the checkouts of ANY Supermarket "over there". I believe that Ralfy is confusing "spam," a kind of congealed processed pork in a can, and "grits," a kind of savory porridge made from ground maize that is boiled. Grits can be served either as a savory breakfast item or as a dinner item.

    • @planejet42
      @planejet42 6 років тому +14

      I think he's confusing grits with hash? It's a meaty potato dish. That sounds more like a hash to me than spam.
