Burning is the searing examination of an alienated young man, Jongsu (Ah-in Yoo), a frustrated introvert whose already difficult life is complicated by the appearance of two people in his orbit: first, Haemi (newcomer Jong-seo Jun), a spirited woman who offers the romantic possibility, and then, Ben (Steven Yeun, THE WALKING DEAD, SORRY TO BOTHER YOU), a wealthy and sophisticated young man she returns from a trip with. However, when Jongsu learns of Ben’s mysterious hobby and Haemi suddenly disappears, his confusion and obsessions begin to mount, culminating in a stunning finale.

Koreans are making some really high quality films
They've BEEN making high quality films
Bro they have art of story telling noy like those Hollywood directors who just hurdle a movie like it's a burden
M Askari Don’t get me wrong, Korean films are great, but there’s just as many excellent directors and writers in the US as there is in Korea.
they've been making art
which titles would you guys recommend?!!
The icon made me think that this was going to be Steven Yeun's skincare routine.
Seeing the thumbnail and title made me think he got a STD
exfoliating LOL
Phahaha this made my day! liked your comment cause I too would've loved to see his skincare routine haha the man's glowing
Ahah yeah, it looks like he's in the bathroom.
HAHAHA Same!
I want a job reviewing movies where I only have to write a single word about it.
"Unexpected"
"Thrilling"
"Masterpiece"
Daring
"Garbage!"
Lol! Trailer editors always grab a few words or phrases from film critic reviews and insert them into the trailer.
okay
“Crazy rich Asian”
who's here after seeing Jeon jong seo's AMAZING performance on THE CALL ?
ME
She is the best female actress i 've seen in my entire life.
Me!!!!! I fell inlove with her 🥺
Me, awesome actor
ME!
I have no idea how someone could find this movie boring. It was like Shining (structurally speaking), nothing is going on in the beginning but you just know that something huge will happen.
I haven't watched the movie, but i'm guessing its because of the music
What was intresting,
Burning him alive in the end???
I'm sorry but this movie was defintely boring especially because of the acting. Only Steve Yeun and the cinematography made this movie worth it for me.
i found... sorry
yea, a whole lot of nothing
I can't believe I found this philosophical masterpiece boring at first. I watched it few days ago, and I can't stop thinking about it ever since. Deep look at a concept of perspective. It was so poetic, and that made me feel even more attached and attracted to it. The movie itself says everything that we need to know. Its in human nature to search for a meaning, as I think I have that great hunger for meaning in life. Absolutely obsessed with this masterpiece.
Exactly my response to the film as well. I was actually about to turn the film off, but after Ben explained his hobby, I made the best decision of my life and saw the film through. After the movie was over, I was in awe and could not stop thinking about about. The more I thought about it, the more it kept rising in the ranks of all of the movies I’ve ever seen. Eventually, I realized, this is the best movie I’ve ever seen. I realized, no other movie can do this. No movie has ever been able to elicit such deep thought and reflection and emotion while also completing pooling the wool over your eyes.
Mnogo mi je drago da ima još Balkanaca koji gledaju Južno Korejske filmove
@@tupacamarushakur5353 naravno da ima 💙
@@tamarapopovic9532 Drago mi je zbog toga. Upravo zavrsio gledanje filma. Stvarno odlican film ,kao i većina odatle.Gledam ih 10+ godina.
The most amazing part of this film, in my opinion, is all of the metaphors and plays on words (which could not be easily understood without understanding Korean). For example, "greenhouse" (the English word) literally means "plastic house" in Korean. I believe that the women that the antagonist targets are the abandoned "plastic houses." And it goes much deeper beyond the shallow interpretation of women having plastic surgery. How he "burns" (makes them disappear) them is a mystery in the film.
guys i think you all are mistaken its not boring its BURNING
Yeah man, it didn't even have any car chases or transformers in it
😄
I love trailers like this. Ones that almost reveal nothing but everything at the same time. I wish Netflix would do more of that.
lol u r right. they do the opposite.
thats cool to see that he's doing a full on korean movie
Or is it less cool that he perhaps HAS to do Korean movies because he's not getting many opportunities in Hollywood since he left TWD?
hmmm
Ricky Andreou well he just did Sorry to Bother You which was pretty popular and a slew of under the radar indie darlings between this year and last. I think Steven has work offered to him but he doesn’t care the audience. He’s cross platform and that’s what I like about him though I’d love to see him headline a major film in the future
@@rickyandreou Korean films are far more superior to American films. Better quality, better acting, better plot. I only went to the theater twice last year and both of them were for Korean films.
Do Koreans eat dogs?
Deeply unsettling and masterfully shot. Steve Yeun is a true gem, glad he's been getting quality work as of recent years.
The critics of Rotten Tomatoes have it a: *92%* While the Audience Score was: *94%*
So... With a score like that I'm definitely watching this movie.
That could mean a very safe film that everyone rates 6 out of 10... Rotten Tomatoes takes reviews and reduces them to favorable or not. Then you get the percentage of favorable vs not. Really great movies tend to divide opinions so those films get way lower ratings on Rotten Tomatoes but the people who like the film really consider it a masterpiece.
I am not saying anything about this film, just that rotten tomatoes is the least reliable way to pick movies. Loot at IMDB and click on the rating number and you will get a breakdown of how people voted. As long as a film has many hundreds of votes or more, then I find their system very useful.
One of the greatest movies last year. It's a real work of art. A great story and a great attention to detail both in the screenplay and in the cinematography. The story is somewhat predictable but the emotional heft still manages to get to you.
It's a stone cold masterpiece. I don't think I've seen a movie like it before, or at least not in a long time. The film is both a personal psychological examination, as well as a sharp metaphor for the way that modern society has created class divisions, isolation, and lack of purpose in a way that causes confusion and ambiguity for an entire generation of young people. These themes inevitably lead to more timeless and essential questions about who we are, where we're going, what we owe this world and vice versa. It's also beautifully shot and directed, also well acted. Hands down best film I saw in 2018 and the fact it didn't get a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film shows how petty and uninspired the Academy really is.
@@seanhandron-obrien4276 Don't fret as we might see it get its deserved nod next year (I believe I read that Burning just missed the cut off for 2018's consideration, which means it's open for 2019). XLT movie, by the way! I still think about it even today.
@@0ooTheMAXXoo0 Call Burning a "very safe film" makes for a big lol.
I am Korean and saw it in the theater.
Burning is boring and difficult for some people.
But it's a masterpiece for me.
It is similar to the Korean movie "The Wailing".
148 minutes long running time, but I didn't know the whole time was passing.
The Wailing is masterpiece , but Burning is bit boring even it has a different story plot...
whoah I got that feeling watching the trailer, the wailing is one of my all time favorite films, such a masterpiece
@Dork Born I'm with you on that. I didn't enjoy 'The Wailing' as much as I enjoyed 'Burning'. And no you are not mentally defective. 'The Waiting' might be more complicated in storyline, but 'Burning' is structurally organised better and weighs more on its message then 'The Wailing' It merely comes down to preference of stories.
Both "The Wailing" and "Burning" are exceptional films. I LOVE both of them.
the wailing was incredible. this comparison makes me more interested in Burning.
i'm here after seeing Jong-seo from the call
As a Haruki Murakami fan, I must say this movie felt like reading one of his books. Incredibly well made.
Wow, whoever made this soundtrack has done an amazing job
HedaRhee agreed af! Intense moments while he chasing Ben on the roads. I could feel him panicking thru the sound
But not the movie tho
This is a really great trailer right here. Beautifully communicates the tone of the movie without giving away any of the plot. Now I'm definitely gonna see this.
I definitely agree
Rich guy likes to make people disappear without a trace as if they never existed, like he describes what he does to the greenhouses. Loner guy will be the only person to know that the girl existed and disappeared. At least, that is what the trailer showed. The only question is how it will end: happy, sad, or mentally twisted. I want to see this film either way because it seems a high level of craft.
@@0ooTheMAXXoo0
Wow I picked up on none of that haha I thought it was just about some rich pyromaniac
funny because Murakami's writing doesn't have a tone
It's what sold me! The tone!
its beyond great trust me. you will think about this film weeks after
1110010001 I saw this film I believe two months ago and I haven’t stopped thinking about it
Say it a week before, still cant stop comming back !
This film sucks.
reminds me after i watched Arrival, it stucks in your head...
Borneo Coolpad oh i hate arrival i dont get the hype really
This movie is simply _amazing_ . I find a lot of comments saying that it's boring, but I don't think those people really understand the underlying 'meaning' behind the story. This is not a movie where every little aspect is clear and easy to understand, but that doesn't mean it is boring! After watching _Burning_ you are left with these questions and that is what makes it so interesting. I would highly recommend seeing this movie!!
This is the dictionary example of a slow burner. Utilizing the time to really explore the lead character's plight, his affections for the girl, and the drama that takes place within his family. All play into the second half of the film and what leads him to the decisions he makes by the end. It also relates to the centralized theme/idea of little and great hunger (what we want now to what we need in our lives) as well as the perception of that idea being muddled by assumptions and the accepted "truth". Fantastic thriller/mystery drama and one I wholeheartedly recommend.
theprowler18, well said. this is my favorite movie of the year outside of maybe Roma.
I'm definitely watching this, because that sounds exactly like my kind of movies.
Ok i am going to watch..
Ok come on then explain fully.. Will see in what perspective u watched this movie
this is just such a incredibly genius movie. when i first watched it, i still thought about it after months. so many symbols and metaphors are used and there are so many various theories you can make up. everyone needs to see this masterpiece.

There's a sublime beauty in the undertones of this film, which only the rarest of rare could find and enjoy. Not everything needs to be BOLD and SCREAMING.
I saw this movie at TIFF. Completely captures the Murakami feel. Keeps you completely engaged and invested in the movie. Would recommend everyone to see

I thought the same but the movie was a lot different than I expected, it is hard to make a movie about Haruki's stories and I think this movie made it perfectly, they changed some aspects but kept it enough same to realize okay well this is Haruki's story no doubt about it
it's the opposite for me I'm going to read the book
Just passing by to say
✨ *this is an amazing movie.* ✨
If you like mystery thrillers and suspense, you need to watch it. ✨👍
I absolutely can't stop watching it. It builds you up and then shocks you in the end. But the best plot twist in this film has always been Steven Yeung. Like damn. His character is dangerous, charming, and enigmatic at the same time.

This movie is one of those films that just sticks in your head. And watching it the second time through, you see it in a whole different light.
Precisely, i got so many interpretations and possibilites...really loved this film
Navins Awesome and Divine Account parts of it are so much darker the second time through... and in my eyes... that one moment that would have possibly changed everything was when the lead decided to let the other guy give the girl a ride home from the restaurant. If he had just insisted on taking her home ...
Totally agree. I actually appreciated it way more the second time.
The movie successfully does it job by making everyone to think and interpret what might have happened in the movie...as if everyone now is a writer and have their own interpretation of the movie.
Yoo Ah In is always fantastic. I'll watch anything he does.
Cinéphiles: Don't listen to the ones who are negative here, especially not if their comment contains the words "boring" or "weird". The film is definitely worth watching. An experience, a ride. Perhaps you won't love it, but it will stay in your head.
The movie had a slow rythme yet it kept us tense the whole time.... A duality of doubt and expectations on an action .... A very unique genre of thriller
Yoo Ah-in and Steven Yeun in the same film? O.O WOW
Burning questions
Warning: Spoilers
Burning, the 2018 FIPRESCI Prize-winning film from South Korea, has a mysterious quality to it, and not just because this romantic drama-thriller also belongs (perhaps most of all) to the mystery genre. Slow paced, understated, it's the kind of film that can create tension in simple moments like silence, watching, following. It appears there could be a simple, straightforward solution: Ben is a serial killer who has murdered Hae-mi, and Jong-su is putting the pieces together. But is it that simple?
1. What was the significance of Jong-su being a writer? Jong-su is trying to craft a novel; perhaps he's finding his subject as he goes. An elderly man (a career counselor?) remarks to Jong-su that protagonists are always "crazy". This may be telling the audience to ask questions about Jong-su himself. Ben also tells Hae-mi to ask Jong-su what a metaphor is. Why is that exchange in the film, and why are we being told to look for it?
2. What is the significance of Hae-mi's well story? It sows doubt in Jong-su's mind about Hae-mi's honesty. He goes back and forth trying to find out if the story is true. Is it a literal truth or does it refer to a spiritual state?
3. What is the significance of the "Great Hunger" theme? When Hae-mi describes an African sunset and her desire to disappear in it, the line is presumed to be innocent and is forgettable on first viewing. Does it provide any answers as to Hae-mi's disappearance?
4. Why does Jong-su set fire to part of a greenhouse? He's frightened of what Ben can do, but comes close to doing it himself. Is Jong-su what he is afraid of?
5. Why William Faulkner? Ask a literary expert, I don't know.
6. Why the subplot of Jong-su's father being charged with assault? This doesn't fit in anywhere into the Ben-Hae-mi plot. A red herring? A useful explanation as to Jong-su's psychology?
7. Why does Jong-su question whether Boil the cat lives only in Hae-mi's mind? He never sees Boil until at Ben's home. Is Boil a smoking gun or is he an illusion?
8. What's the significance of North Korea being within sight of the main setting and their propaganda being in earshot? A sense of place, or perhaps a sign we should look at divisions in Korean society, a Korea with both struggling youth and Great Gatsbys.
9. Why is Jong-su's military service mentioned so briefly? One wonders what we can learn from where he went, what he saw and what happened to him.
10. Why the conversation on how the Chinese are like the Americans? We're directed to think about people who put them in the centre of everything and people considerate of others. Ben is the type who puts himself in the centre; is Jong-su too?
With so many mysteries, Burning is the kind of film that demands repeated viewings and thought, a psychological mystery waiting to be decoded.
Great👍👏
There are many reviews on the internet that decipher the movie. Honestly about 70% of your questions were already answered, but I can't provide the answers as well as other people already have and that would take some time to formulate.
If you are still looking for a better understanding of the movie then read the reviews!!
Amazing Trailer!!
How it grips you till the end with short dialogues, blank stares and one word reviews with that demonic background music!
Absolutely stunning! It will leave you thinking about the movie after when it's done! It is on the slow side but that's what makes it so beauty, the cinematic, the music, the acting. Everything about the movie was great! I was not bored for a single second. Highly recommend it!

Korean art flim are my favorite art film because they never bore me. The plot isn't too abstract yet you are left asking what all of it means.
Those who got bored of this movie are obviously used to being spoon-fed. If you’re the type who only takes films at face value, then this one’s not for you.
The people who think this movie is boring are the same ones who think the Joker is some kind of subtle, subversive masterpiece.
Yea pretty boring. So much mystery that it's a chore to figure out.

Steven Yeun is clearly a better actor than The Walking Dead could let him be.
I think he does great in the walking dead as it is but if that's him holding back than damn he's talented af
Sick!! Can't wait.
Theres always this feeling of dread thats lingering in the movie, Director Park is so keen on underemphasizing certain things, then you realize it and youre like 'wow', the way he likes to linger on characters, the camera is also very interestingly placed to not just make you focus on one character or aspect, a slow build up, making you ponder om what this story is about?, i can't say too much for those that have not seen it, but it's prettt slow and may feel sometimes that nothing is going on, but once it grabs your attention it never lets go and keeps it there, the acting, the subtle gestures and facial expressions the actors make is so spot on, this film manages to bring a sense of realism and surrealism at the same time, the delicate intricacies, the spot on and thought provoking story, yoo ah in's abillity to bring a sense of anxiousness with him, for most of the movie, i like how theres not a lot of dialogue, which makes it realistic and cold, allowing u to see the darkness in the show, but the beauty in the movie is how it shows that less is more, there is beauty in confusion, its a really commendable movie, i really loved every minute of it
Can't believe you typed all that

What's incredible about this film is the tension that builds beneath the surface while nothing really happens on screen. This is the best film I have ever seen. I have watched it twice now and still am completely astonished by how this movie is able to use such subtlety to evoke such a wide array of emotion and reflection within the viewer. This is the first time I’ve seen an ambiguous ending done completely correctly, and maybe that’s because the ending isn’t so ambiguous at all if you’ve paid attention. The character development in the first half of the film may bore some, but the payoff for making it through is extraordinary. I wish the reception and praise for this film was as great as it was for Parasite, because while Parasite is a fantastic film in it’s own right, the suspense and the mystery and the revelation of Burning cannot be matched.

Glenn is mad and now he's taking actions.
I finally saw this film and what seems like an unassuming love/romance drama becomes sinister, haunting, and ambiguous to uncomfortable levels. The greatest strength of the film is not knowing for sure what we learn or assume is the truth or a lie, be it idealized or for certain. That is what this film does effectively well. It still lingers on in my mind as well as become more of a modern day classically done mystery drama as I discuss and recommend it.
Definitely check this one out and see it with a friend to discuss it. It's a lot to unpack on your own but man, it is worth it.
You've just scratched the surface
This girl!! Mesmerizing actress!
For once... I am actually so glad I did not see this trailer before going to see the movie (I just saw glowing review scores and it was being shown in a local festival). Whilst the editing and score of this trailer is superb... it gives away the surprise sinister edge to the plot that it is a wonderful discovery for the unknowing viewer.
Just finished, hauntingly beautiful!
I just finished it too! And still don't understand! What happend to the girl?
I liked but still left with same question.... what happened to the girl?
Yeah I got the leads... but was still thinking if what I thought was right... settled in with the same reasoning though....
Well actually its open to interpretation. The protagonist believed that She was Murdered by Ben...but its also just possible that Ben Dumped her and She Ran Away. It could also happened the Hae Mi killed her self.
Weird how she never loses her flat by just not appearing for months on end? Pish.
