What Saved Bleach

  • Bleach is a series that doesn't need much of an introduction. A part of the big 3 along side Naurto and One Piece, Bleach has seemingly always been the underdog of the 3. With the anime coming back to finally animate the Thousand Year Blood War arc however, it seems that things are beginning to change... but what, if anything, saved Bleach from being forgotten?

*IMPORTANT NOTE* Something that happened in the making of the video was the VA for Rukia confirmed that the anime was originally green lit back in 2016. I meant to put some text on screen, when talking about how the anime was always geared to come back at some point. But since I didn’t I’m leaving this comment here. It doesn’t change really much about the video except really confirming my point that it was always going to come back, but still something important to be mentioned.

There is going to be filler, just in a way it wont ruin things. That's kinda what Kubo said at least.
Edit: I know it wouldn't really be called filler since the manga ended, what I meant was its going to be expanded upon in a way where it wouldn't seem rushed.

@@jaccoblaponsie7729 I think it's better than that. Since Kubo is so closely involved with the production, and some parts of the manga weren't well received, Kubo has made "Anime Cannon" scenes. People always underestimate the sheer size and tenacity of the Bleach fandom. I could be wrong, but I think the hate bandwagon perhaps made hardcore fans double down and defend the series harder, out of their love for Bleach certainly but also a little out of spite. From personal experience, during the manga's weekly release, I would be the first to criticize the flaws of the later half of the last arc, but as soon as haters started talking shit, and especially when their criticisms were all the same tired arguments echoed by a bunch of content creators, I suddenly found the need to turn up and download the game, buy the merch and novels, and bring home the manga volumes. In a way, the haters kinda ironically helped keep the fandom alive.

I love Bleach so much. Naruto and Bleach remain tied as my favorite of long-running Manga & Anime and I have nostalgic connections to both. Love the characters in Bleach, but I loved the themes and philosophies within the Bleach World(s). Sure at times I enjoyed how flashy Naruto got with their characters and abilities, but something about Bleach being centered on the Spirit world, the concept of Hollows and one's own power (manifested in zanpaktuos, Bankai etc) was something I loved way more.
The idea that Bleach sucks and is "the worst of the Big 3" I find to just be middle school mentality bullshit from people. Discrediting a Manga/Anime just to prop your fav up, or because said property has a following just shows such a lack of appreciation of the art of Manga & Anime. I personally don't like One Piece...but I respect and understand its significance and popularity of the medium of Manga and Anime. What hurts bleach when contending for the big 3 is really two things. One; 2 back to back arcs having the same plot. (Girl gets captured, ichigo has to save them). Couple this with the fact that now, a lot of characters previously useful in the Soul Society arc are now useless (Renji, Chad, Orihime, Rukia to some extent) and now you have a carbon copy arc with boring characters and dragged on fights (szayelaporro). If more side characters got their time to shine in the Hueco Mundo arc in a more meaningful way it would have been much more enjoyable. Next is the lack of foreshadowing to Ichigo's powers and abilities. There was even a scene changed from the manga where Ywach tries to tell Ichigo his name but the panel is blank, preventing us AND ichigo from hearing it and leaving us guessing. In the anime, in this scene Ywach instead says "Zangetsu" which completely undermines the foreshadowing placed by the manga.

The Soul Society arc and Arrancar arc are not carbon copies of each other. Yes, there are parallels from a broad scope such as rescuing girl, but if you take a closer look its fundamentally not the same. They had to rush and fight to save Rukia, because she was going to be executed, but Orihime on her terms, agreed to go thinking if she did she would "save her friends". There was a rush to save Orihime, but there wasn't much of a need for a fight. Grimmjow pointed this out saying "You could've just taken Orihime and left but you stayed for a reason", indicating that Ichigo isn't fighting to to protect, he's fighting because he wants to. On top of the fact that, while rescuing Orihimie is important to our characters, in the over arching story its not important and was just used as a way to separate the Soul Society's forces. Plus the Soul Society Arc was primarily a story about uprooting and changing established systems if those systems are only there because "that's just how its always been", the Arrancar arc is definitely not about that. I could go way more into detail and point out all the differences, but I think you get my point. Also, there wasn't anything changed in either the manga or the anime when Ichigo first meets "Zangetsu". In the manga the panel isn't blank but it's actually scratched out with black scribbles (Ichibe scratched it out). In the anime the sound is just distorted and Ichigo says "I couldn't hear his name". It's not until training with Urahara, where Ichigo calls out the name "Zangetsu".

I personally think there's two huge reasons why it got left behind when it came to the Big 3 and few other minor reasons.
The first main reason is that Bleach doesn't take advantage of the great ingredients that it had to make a good dish, it really doesn't take advantage of how interesting it's characters were, most didn't really have a complete character arc and there was no nuance in exploring them. There's a reason why there were no deaths in Bleach as significant to the fandom as there are for the One Piece and Naruto fandom, both having quite a few of those "traumatic deaths".
Same thing happens with World Building, Bleach once more had a lot of potential: Soul Society, Hueco Mundo, the Wandenreich and even smaller groups like the Vizards and the Fullbringers, all of these were really interesting groups, societies or cultures, but they were so heavily under explored that when you start to really break them down, they aren't really that distinguishable or unique from one another.
The 2nd biggest reason is the recipe for the dish, Bleach's main plot was probably the strongest of the 3... until Aizen's defeat that is, after that it just went downhill, the pacing and originality simply dissapeared, and the latter is even more of a problem considering that Kubo already struggled with bringing original ideas to it's story, which can be shown in examples like the one Christian gave, sure, there's a different context in both arcs, but you need way more than to tell two stories using the same structure.

I think they knew a long term (10 year) comeback would be super successful. Of course, the games helped, but I honestly don't believe that there's more people that hate/dislike Bleach. As a member of the big 3 (as controversial as it was), there was no way a comeback wouldn't be as big as it has been. It's like when Hajime No Ippo took years to get a new season (which I am still waiting for a season 4!). Bleach may or may not have been the best of the big 3, but it definitely deserved a spot there. Plus, nostalgia hits super hard after such a long break as well.

Actually, the main reason why Bleach was not being animated after it ended wasn't because the studio was busy. It was because Bleach's last arc, Kubo went all out and did not censor any blood and gore.
Pierrot is known for it's family friendly content so if they were to animate Bleach, it had to be put into adult swim which they just didn't want. Alternatively, if they did censor it, they would censor it so much it would he unrecognisable from the source material. It was not worth it in their eyes.
After deliberation, they finally decided to make Bleach's tybw since Kubo hinted at a continuation arc. And more content means more money.

I, like many others, stayed around in the fandom, and it's true Bleach didn't end off strong and had a lot of missing information regarding many characters in the manga, however, that does not make it a terrible manga/anime overall like people once said before the hype came back. I've been hoping that the anime will eventually steer off the path that the manga eventually took because of it's sudden cancellation and instead tell the story he wanted to. He apparently had the end result planned out for awhile but the last little bits were rushed because of the unfortunate disagreement with shonen jump.

    • @AntwanShiro
      @AntwanShiro  Рік тому +3

They confirmed that there will be a lot of added content to things such as fight and I’m going to assume storylines. However the cancellation wasn’t for the reason you might think. Tite Kubo halfway through the arc started having a lot of issues with his health, which contributed to the pace being picked up. He stated he ended it the way he wanted to (in terms of the actual ending not how he went about it), but he was in a rush to finish it because he wanted to atleast finish it before he had to stop because of his health. There’s a couple videos that go more into detail and show actual interviews done with Kubo about what he thought about the ending, but that’s a brief run down. Regardless it was unfortunate we couldn’t see more from certain fights or storylines, but I’m sure the anime will flesh it out

Personal opinion!: I think one of the major things holding back Bleach's popularity was the overall palatability of it to Western and younger audiences.
Bleach roots itself in a lot more tradition than Naruto or One Piece do first off. Just compare the sets and the worlds these stories take place in: Bleach has a lot more accurate Japanese influences, whereas Naruto fulfils the concept of the 'ninja' Western audiences were so mystified by at the time, and One Piece has a lot of cultures not derived from Japan mixed in. Its only been recently that there's been a resurgence of factual Japanese tradition really, and so Western audiences weren't as amused by the non-glamourised sets the world takes place in (or, more accurately, not AS glamourised - from what I know Japan doesn't have a 24/7 nighttime desert or Seireitei but oh well). One example of Western audiences being turned away was when Ichigo attained his fullbring for the first time. A lot of people not familiar to Asian culture kicked up a fuss over the uh...shape of it, remember? This made the anime unpalatable to Western audiences, really, putting a major dent in its popularity.
Another issue was that it's actually a relatively dark anime in comparison to the lighter plotlines of the Big Three. Its literal theme is death, something not a lot of young kids would want to watch too often. Even the overall look of the main characters is themed around the colours black or white. Comparatively, the other members of the big three had characters that were so distinctly bright and colourful it made advertisements containing them more eye catching and interesting. Tite Kubo's character design is amazing, but it does feel oddly dark in comparison to the other characters in a shounen jump weekly magazine. Once again, another indent in its popularity.
I think now was the best time for Bleach to return. As a society we've grown to enjoy darker and comedic stories like these a little more, and grown an appreciation for accurate and non-Westernised culture in the way that Bleach presents it. I'm happy its returned, and I hope the new season can sway popular opinion towards it being a massive player in The Big 3 and a massive W for Shounen as a genre.

To me, what save Bleach is the growth or the internet. And by that, i mean the millennials and gen z. Bleach is a much more mature series compared to the other 2 of the big 3. And it's not to detriment in any way to the other 2 of the big 3, which are amazing, is just some arcs of Bleach, like the Fullbringer arc (my favorite), is something you probably can get the full grasp on, only when you pass some stages in your life. Which generally you never get across when you're young, as you shouldn't get across those. Each phase of life is beautiful because it's different. Just, as now, since a lot of people who grew with the internet has grown into adulthood or at least young adulthood, they can actually see what is amazing of this series. It just aims to a different audience

I feel like the bleach story shows how powerful and misguided false narratives today.
People nowadays talk about MSM and act like UA-camrs and content creators offer more honest feedback, which isn't completely true or untrue. Truth is weather you're on TV or a UA-cam page your voice holds weight and you as a content creator has a responsibility to be honest same as someone on TV. Difference is alot of those people were taught this concept and a lot of UA-cam content creators are just ridijt the hype wave for views unaware or unconcerned w the responsibility of their actions.
I think bleach showed that the longer these content creators and UA-camrs are around than they will eventually be held to the same standards as everyone in media. And they should be.

I've not watched One Piece but I have watched Naruto and Bleach. If the Big Three is a worthwhile category then I can compare it with Naruto. I enjoyed Bleach (at least the main arcs) but I couldn't watch it consistently because of how broken up the arcs were by long filler arcs. I watched all of Naruto and Shippuden pretty consistently in a much shorter length of time than Bleach. Although there are similar problems with all of the shonen I've watched, the power scaling issues felt much more pronounced in Bleach than in any other, including DBS (which I thought had ludicrously confected scaling problems). I must say though that I think Bleach had one of the best soundtracks out of the anime I've watched, almost entirely because of shiro sagisu; Number one (and it's variants), Chokkaku and the Spanish guitar pieces for example.

as someone who is a bit older and was watching the original series weekly as it went live, Bleach suffered badly during the manga writers strike (07-08). the anime teams made their own arcs which fell flat and why the anime caught up to the manga so quickly. Cause the fillers were not liked by the viewers it ended up getting a bad rep and lost a lot of viewers. The word at the time was jump wanted to bring something else in and as it had caught up to the manga it was going to not bother with the fillers and was one of the first to stop fillers and it was to be picked back up, we didnt expect it to take 10 years though...

This was exactly why I dropped Bleach back when episodes were released weekly. They kept making filler episodes where all the characters did was talk about each other instead of moving the story along. Full on filler arcs were terrible but at least somewhat entertaining because it had an actual storyline, but what sucked the most were episodes where literally nothing happens, and the characters would just talk. Like the episodes leading up to Aizen trying to break the boundaries of Karakura town. I totally dropped the series after that

I think I can pinpoint when I went back to Bleach.
A couple years ago Death Battle made a video. I don't remember if it was the Ichigo vs Luffy or the Aizen vs Madara episode. Regardless tho, I watched a video by a guy who had Time-Breaker Bardok as his pfp, and he was talking to a guy named Clyde. They went into a in-depth analysis of Death Battles assessment.
From there I was recommended to Mr.Tommo by the algorithm god. I watched his videos almost religiously and caught myself up to TYBW with basically the footnotes of the manga.
I remember watching Burn The Witch and was hearing through forums that its technically tied to the Bleach universe
I was reading BBS Reddit comments about the Espada Beyond Resurrecion drops and how they were made with Mr. Kubo's input and influence
.. yeah.. bleach never left the hearts of many people and reminded me why I loved it so much in the first place.. Thank you. All of you who participated within the community.

Watched every episode of bleach my points on why it kinda fell off was: overuse of bankai it’s meant to be a last resort kinda move for people that can use it the. It just got used every 2 seconds into a fight by everyone. It was crazy to everyone that Ichigo in season 1 hurt a menos grande then those just become easy opponents for everyone. So the power scaling just went out the window and so did the anticipation of are they going to use their bankai’s. Then the filler arcs my god they dragged on something awful. Could genuinely skip over 50 episodes and it would mean nothing to the main story.
