Wow! I can't believe how good this cartridge sounds considering it's price. This is definitely something I would recommend to any audiophile on a budget.
+Stereophonic It sounds great! I have had two of them. I always sell them...why? I don't know. One also must consider how and who mastered these records. I forget whether it was Bernie Grundman or Bob Ludwig who mastered these. I could listen to this record at full volume for hours and not get ear fatigue. I have a Sony turntable, too, but unfortunately, this Grado is not insulated and when I used it on the Sony, the hum was out of control. It would also hum on the Denon DP-45F. Weird because all three are direct drive, (the third being this Technics), but it has never hummed on the Technics. I bet there's an explanation somewhere out there. Thanks for commenting!
By the way, that Grado Blue was one of the best cartridges I've ever had. I sold it, though. I think I regret it. Wait, this video I did it with my original Canon camera. Have you checked out the new one? I posted it on Saturday or yesterday, I think.
Thank you for commenting! Before my house got broken into, I used to do the movies with an HD Canon HV30. It recorded both HD video and PCM 16-bit sound, so all I had to do was put it in my computer and upload it to UA-cam. I now used a Nikon D5100 for the video, while I record it directly to my computer from the amplifier. I put them together with iMovie and upload it.
Oh god, this is wonderful!
My Grado Blue coming soon! =)
sounds awesome, getting a Technics SL-J2 used soon and plan to put a new cartridge on it.
I believe it's electromagnetic interference from the turntable motor, I've noticed the same with my 1210. I didn't hear it until I purchased a grado cartridge, the previous cartridges had higher output so I didn't notice it....
Yeah, it's quite annoying because now I can hear because I KNOW it is there. Thanks for your comment!
Awesome! Thank You!
I do like it! However, I think I might get a separate phono amp when I saved enough money. Thanks for your comment and sorry for the delay to reply!
Oh, yeah! Too bad I don't have that cartridge anymore. I am setting up to make more videos. :) Thanks for commenting!
God I love the Prestige series, and they have one for what you want to pay. I have the green and I wouldn't trade it for the Ortofon blue after listening it. Grado is a hand selected hand built cartridge in the day of machine built assembly lines. The family has stood for quality since they made their first cartridge over their grocery store in Brooklyn.
+D. Paul Riderman It depends on the TT you have, on high mass tonearms Grado's cannot perform as well as the 2M's.
Actually I have the Gold1 stylus now, and it sounds oh so good. It's in my old Denon DP300F, and they are a great match with a light aluminum arm. My Rega TT has the Audio Technica ATN150MLX body (with the 440MLa stylus), and the combination is about as accurate as any cartridge I've heard. However, nothing sounds as smooth as the Grado.
D. Paul Riderman
Yes, Grado's have a nice smooth sound and create a nice atmosphere, it's really down to preference, i had to replace mine with 2M though because it performs better on MKII.
+D. Paul Riderman QUESTION: How do I know if I have a high mass arm or a low mass arm? I have that Technics on the video, a Sony PS500X and a Denon DP-45F. I have never understood the whole "mass" part of the arm and how you have to pick a cartridge that matches such mass. Thanks for your answer!
Notify you maker service department to determine for sure. Generally professional DJ TTs are high mass. That's why it always amazes me the owners think this type is the best for high end carts.
Thanks!
I have not had the chance to get my hands on a Grado Green. I would love to try it, though. I have to say something though. With the Technics, I have gotten a very, very, very soft hum. Unless you wear headphones and think about it, you won't hear it. However, with the Sony PS-X500 (now dead), the hum was present; even stronger as it approached the center of the record.
I might have to get one of these, I've owned a couple P-Mount Prestige Blacks, and I really liked how smooth they sounded, and this sounds even better than either one of those. I'm not sure what changes Grado made to the Black2, but they didn't have the same sound as the original, but it could have been that the turntable it was mounted on was in questionable condition when I got it off of eBay, and it was quite thoroughly used and abused for years after that.
The only thing I didn't like about the Grados was that funky tool you needed to get the stylus out. I always seemed to lose it. Eventually I figured out how to get the stylus out without it, but it was an expensive lesson.
Nice. Put a video of your set up.
Yes, I remove the sound from the Nikon and replace it with the sound that the computer recorded. I will try to make a new one tomorrow. I got this REM LP that sounds phenomenal, and I just must share.
Yikes...great question! I have not had the opportunity to listen to the Ortofon 2M Red, but I am saving to buy one. It has gotten really good reviews. I wouldn't know what to tell you.
Nice display! The most amazing cartridge anywhere near affordable is the Goldring Legacy, though!
Congratulations! I had to sell mine. I regret it.
Who needs CD? :)
@Steely1919 Not me! :)
Awesome! Thank You!
What about the Green Grado? Any thoughts?
Why not use the small square weight between cartridge and shell?
The one that comes in Grado box.
Actually, when I had this cartridge, it didn't come with the little weight. :/
Pedro Perez
Maybe you lost it? or there was a misteke from the company?
I didn't use the weight when i first bought this cartridge but later on when i did there was huge difference in the sound.
Oh, man! I've had two Grado Blues, which I have eventually sold, and none of them had a weight. Wow, I didn't even know they came with one! I will check next time I decide to get one. Thanks!
K Pedro Perez
Maybe the cartidges after 2010 dont come with this weight, i checked their site and they say that they have made difference in their design the last years.
This weight served like a static or high frequency dampener i think, or maybe both.
I have my cartridge since 2002 or so i think, i hope grado makes a direct mount for MKII...
minimal minimal
You know, i put the screws upside down just like you have them on this cartridge and i realised that this is the correct way because the head of the screw does not touch the metallic side of the cartridge and by what i listen to now, i realised that this is very important!
Thanks!
I have the same cartridge but it doesn't sound this good. Sounds muffled like it's underwater, very different from my Ortofon M2 Red. I wonder what's wrong :\
check your amplifier, maybe? this record had also been taken good care of. But it is a great cartridge.

Did you get your Blue?
@pedrito77 Me neither!
Hi, do you think a Grado Prestige Green is in the same range as an Audio Technica AT 440 ? I'm new in this and want to buy a new and good cartridge ! Thanks
Hey, Ricardo. After trying Grados (always BLUE) and AT, I like the AT cartridges better. Especially because using my DD turntables, I don't get a hum when the cartridge is approaching the center. What kind of TT do you have? I LOVE my Denon DL160, though. I like the BLUE, too, though. It is all so subjective.
Hi Pedro ! thanks a lot for your answer! All the roads are leading me to AT440....I just got started with an old Numark TT 1700, and a Marantz ampli, and Sony speakers, very hibrid but i',m loving this analogue sound, it really opens dimensions that digital sound does not. Best wishes ! Salúd !
It sounds cool! Hey, I have learned that it does not matter how it sounds here in youtube. What matters is how it sounds to YOU. I am happy with my setup. I have thought of getting fancy amps and cartridges, but I am happy with what I have. Yes, records sound fantastic! If they're well recorded, even better! Get Daft Punk's latest album. It sounds amazing! Even if you don't like that kind of music, the way it's recorded, mastered and pressed, it's phenomenal. Enjoy!
I think you should go for Grado, they are very good for their price, i am more than satisfied by blue, i highly recommend you should get it.
I have it on a MKII , Denon PMA 1055R and Audio Spectrum Studio 4, i mostly listen to new wave, but also rock, classical and electronic.
minimal minimal ^^ Agreed. Blue is a very sweet sounding cartridge. However, don't install it on a Sony Direct Drive TT. My friend and I tried it on both our Sonys and it always had a heavy HUMMMM.
Cual es mejor, grado blue o grado black?
Pues, nunca he usado el Black.
Has mirado el sitio needledoctor punto com? Es bueno, y los precios son razonables. De otra manera, te recomiendo Ebay. Yo puse esta Blue en subasta y la compraron por $66 el día que me escibiste. :(
Oh god, this is wonderful!
My Grado Blue coming soon! =)
