50 year old here. I see this commercial and literally want to cry. How did things get so backwards. Back then that was the goal. Be a clean shaved man with a girlfriend/wife, great job and a man who takes care of his family. Seems thoses days are long gone now. Or frowned upon at least.

I grew up with this song/commercial. This was just ordinary common then. My father had his Gillette safety razor from the Marine Corp. 1959. I loved the Brush Plus from 1985 so much that "Santa" brought me one for Christmas then.
I read hundreds of men shedding tears here at this commercial. Myself included. Showed it to a co worker today on my construction site. He did the same thing. I know exactly why too!...
It was an era gone by of reaching for the stars. Being American and aspiring not only to be a a family man, a lover, an athlete, a father, a husband, a guru whizz kid, a worker, and a masculine man. You know why this song commercial strikes the heart of every man?
BECAUSE THAT AMERICA. THAT PRIDE. THAT WHOLESOMENESS! THAT MASCULINITY IS NEVER COMING BACK AGAIN!

I agree with all that you said. Except this commercial was also shown in Australia for years (notice the Australian accent of the voice at the end?). It resonated with us too because the idea of the successful masculine man wasn’t just an American thing.
