    So yes, I have weighed heavier bikes on my scales. I’ve even weighed heavier two stroke dirt bikes. But that is beside the point. The point here is that this 2023 Yamaha YZ 450 FX is literally 6 pounds heavier than its Honda counterpart. 6 pounds! I wonder where, in the world all of that weight is. In this day and age of trying to get the most power with the least amount of weight, I think 6 pounds is pretty remarkable. I’ve said it before, though, weight on the scale, does not always translate to wait on the trail. there is a lot more to this than just meets the eye still though,

    450fx holds 2.15 gallons while the rx holds 1.69 gallons. 1 gallon is apx 6 lbs. .5 gallons more in fx means 3 more lbs.
    So really it is 3lbs heavier which I wouldn't be surprised if that's tied up in radiator coolant, wifi type add ons, 6th gear, or the oem silencer.

    Claimed wet weight of the 2023 YZ450F is 242 lbs. Claimed wet weight of the 2023 YZ450FX us 256 lbs. It is known that one of the big differences between "X" models and the motocross models is the addition of a coil to put lights on it. Gas tank YZ450f = 1.6 gal vs YZ450fx = 2.2 gal. 18 inch tire on the fx, that will add a little more weight over the f model. I suspect this is going to be just a bunch of nit-noid stuff that made the difference.

      From what I’ve read about the 2023 yz450f, I’m not sure they’d do much to them to call them an FX. The new ratios and higher rev limiter pretty much make it the perfect platform for enduro/mx/trails and bassically anything you want to do with it.
      The only changes they’ll make would most likely be bigger fuel tank, bash plate, hand guards, and possibly an 18” rear wheel instead of the 19” they run on the MX bikes.

    I love my 22 yz450fx and have very few complaints. Other than being a bitch to start in the cold weather it’s been awesome. It might be heavy but it’s still agile. My previous bike was an old 04 yz250f and comparing the bikes, the 450 honestly didn’t feel that much heavier. I obviously can’t flick it around quite as much, because of inertia. The most notable thing was the power. It wants to rip my arms off out of a corner at times lol. And it definitely wears me out faster. I’m mainly a desert rider so the 450 is definitely my go to. but if was gunna head to the woods for the day I’d probably want the 250, just because the lack of power is so much more forgiving. Lol why not have a bike for different riding styles. Still have my old 250f now I’m looking for a 2 smoker next lol. Gunna have one of each eventually

    • @x_Heffe_X
      @x_Heffe_X Рік тому

      Dumb question for you, but since you mentioned it being tough to start in the cold, are you using the cold start (choke?) option? I had trouble starting mine (also a 22' 450fx) prior to using the cold start.

    • @sethmurphy531
      @sethmurphy531 Рік тому

      @@x_Heffe_X the only time I’ve had the issue is when it’s about 30 degrees or less, I’ve used the cold start but that doesn’t always help. Ive found that putting a little tension on the throttle sometimes helps. And I don’t mean opening it just taking the few millimeters of free play out of it. I think the bike just gets flooded, and with a fuel injector its a little harder to clear it out. It also has an over cooling problem when it’s that cold outside. It’s hard to get it hotter that 120 degrees while riding. At an idle it gets up to running temp just fine but as soon as you start riding it cools right down. But I get around that by partially blocking the rads.

      I rode mine the other day in 28F weather (22 WR450) it would crank then the starter would spin free. Was a pain to start.. was kinda surprised, almost think that the battery wasn’t supplying enough juice.. didn’t feel too bad though, my buddies 22 kx450 was doing the exact same thing haha. Took us a minute to get started (I tried the cold start on and off) once it was running it was first blip of the button and it would go. I’ve started it before in about 40F and it fired up without any issue 🤷‍♂️

    • @sethmurphy531
      @sethmurphy531 Рік тому

      @@evanwilliams6352 yeah any time it’s gets into the 20s it doesn’t want to fire. It could be a battery issue but I’ve also found if it stalls while it’s cold or warming up, the problem gets worse. I think it’s just getting to much fuel and the stock plug may be a little cold. I’ve been thinking about trying a hotter spark plug to see if that helps. But like just like your WR, once it’s at running temp the problem goes away.

    Well for starters the exhaust wraps around the engine which is not nessesary. My 2022 KX450 the exhaust comes out the front of the engine and same with all the other manufacturers so why does Yamaha have there exhaust come out the back and wrap around the left side then run down the right side towards the back? Doesn't make sense, that's just more metal exhaust on the bike then needed.

    Dual cam vs single cam. Wider piston/smaller crank versus the Honda (basically an over-square setup to be able to keep the valve lift/spring tension to a minimum while keeping valve flow area - all have implications for the total mass of the head). Longer silencer (at least it used to be), and probably longer total exhaust length. Electronics modules for the Bluetooth stuff. Probably taller radiator height. Also if they boosted their electrical output from the 22 that flywheel rotor is probably a brick too. A carryover from the first gen FX is also a huge brick of a starter clutch. Got lighter in gen 2 but still not "light". The WR trans gearset I don't think has changed for decades and is probably still heavy too.
    Heavier bike, but it won't rattle your eyeballs out of your skull like the Honda. Racking up hundreds of hours thrashing my 16 FX around and it's not going anywhere, despite its quirks.

      The FX has a bigger fuel tank because it’s an enduro model.

      Compared to the Honda. The KTM run a single cam engine and they shave a bit of weight there but makes less power. This is nit picking when you get into this stuff. Only few riders can ride and if these bikes to their full potential any way

    My buddy has this bike (can't remember if its 22 or 21 model), but 3rd gear is and amazing gear in this bike! You can go to a track and almost keep it in 3rd gear most of the time! you can go on a faster trail, and keep a lot of it on 3rd gear! Fun bike! Am kinda looking at a new 450 bike (this bike, the Honda 450RX, and the new KTM 450 XCF-W are on my sight)

    The 19 Yamaha I had...not only was it 10# heavier than everything else, it felt 30# heavier. It was a great bike but a total tank !

    Hey kyle had a few of these and love them. The best mod for me is a restrictor in the exhaust, maybe a fisch spark arrestor is the best way to mellow the power and throttle response enjoy

    It's gotta be the muffler and the forks. Doesn't the honda use air forks and the yamaha uses spring forks?

    My son’s 22 Wr250f sux for tight mountain (east Tn) single track.
    -heavy
    -power off idle is weak as hell
    -waaaay too stiff
    -bends shit up every time it’s dropped
    -cranks/starts slooowly
    I hate it and can’t wait to swap it out for another KTM.

    Just a thought. Since you review bikes for a living how about finding out why it's heavier and making a video on that? Better than asking the viewers who come here for information on bikes and would make for a more interesting video.

    Great to see a different color! Have you thought about doing used bike reviews? Best 2 or 4 stroke under 5k?

      Too many variables. Not to mention the previous owner's idea of a rebuild. So yeah if you had 5k and really wanted a used bike I'd say do some research and shop around. Plenty of bikes can be had with good stuff for 5k. But at that point if you wanted a full size entry level bike you can get something like a crf230/250f, klx250, etc. Or make a fat down payment on a kx250fx or a decent down payment on a tc/xc etc

    Honda is more of a MX bike with some Enduro mods. Yamaha's have made them for Enduro and off road. Transmissions are different etc.
