I just picked up a 2023 YX250FX after 32 years off the bike. Local Honda dealers had nothing in stock so i went Team Blue. I love it so far after 8 hours on it only.

I just picked up my 23 450fx about a month ago. I've got right at 7 hrs on it so far. Coming from a 250x this 450fx is an absolute animal. Very pleased

450fx holds 2.15 gallons while the rx holds 1.69 gallons. 1 gallon is apx 6 lbs. .5 gallons more in fx means 3 more lbs.
So really it is 3lbs heavier which I wouldn't be surprised if that's tied up in radiator coolant, wifi type add ons, 6th gear, or the oem silencer.

I race a 2019 YZ450FX so I can at least speak with a BIT of knowledge on it. It's little stuff that adds up. The WiFi module and the wiring/switch that comes along with it. The motor is a dual overhead cam setup vs the Honda has a single cam so all the extra valvetrain components that come with it. Obvious there's other stuff, but those jump out at me right away.

Kyle, the review a lot of us would love to see is a comparison / shootout between a 390 Beta and Husky / KTM (TE 350 or XCW 350). Heck throw in the 300 Sherco 4stroke. These are popular bikes and no one to my knowledge has pitted these mid sized 4-strokes against each other 👍. The magazines are too afraid to do it.

Dual cam vs single cam. Wider piston/smaller crank versus the Honda (basically an over-square setup to be able to keep the valve lift/spring tension to a minimum while keeping valve flow area - all have implications for the total mass of the head). Longer silencer (at least it used to be), and probably longer total exhaust length. Electronics modules for the Bluetooth stuff. Probably taller radiator height. Also if they boosted their electrical output from the 22 that flywheel rotor is probably a brick too. A carryover from the first gen FX is also a huge brick of a starter clutch. Got lighter in gen 2 but still not "light". The WR trans gearset I don't think has changed for decades and is probably still heavy too.
Heavier bike, but it won't rattle your eyeballs out of your skull like the Honda. Racking up hundreds of hours thrashing my 16 FX around and it's not going anywhere, despite its quirks.

    • @evanwilliams6352

You say the FX has the WR transmission? 🤔 did not know that. I knew it was different than the F model

    • @gordonhill28
      @gordonhill28 2 роки тому +1

@@evanwilliams6352 The FX has had the WR transmission from its introduction in 2016, so I'm assuming the 2023 is the same, but I haven't seen a deep dive on this model year yet to confirm. As I recall, those gear ratios and part numbers were heritage part numbers from very early WR426/WR450 parts sheets. It would be nice if this bike got a thorough top to bottom refresh, but I doubt they sell enough of them to warrant that.

From what I’ve read about the 2023 yz450f, I’m not sure they’d do much to them to call them an FX. The new ratios and higher rev limiter pretty much make it the perfect platform for enduro/mx/trails and bassically anything you want to do with it.
The only changes they’ll make would most likely be bigger fuel tank, bash plate, hand guards, and possibly an 18” rear wheel instead of the 19” they run on the MX bikes.

Claimed wet weight of the 2023 YZ450F is 242 lbs. Claimed wet weight of the 2023 YZ450FX us 256 lbs. It is known that one of the big differences between "X" models and the motocross models is the addition of a coil to put lights on it. Gas tank YZ450f = 1.6 gal vs YZ450fx = 2.2 gal. 18 inch tire on the fx, that will add a little more weight over the f model. I suspect this is going to be just a bunch of nit-noid stuff that made the difference.

Here's a fun little review idea... Since you will probably have to get a spark arrestor, get the LEXX end cap and get the Lexx Trail saver tip. Put the two together (takes a little drilling and grinding) and you have the quietest exhaust AND the power shifts down on the curve. Take the power tuner and -2 everything on the FI map to get back to close to baseline. For trail riding it is a transformative mod. So quiet and much more low end. Its a good way to showcase how revolutionary the FI tuner is for mods. Also don't be afraid of making your own map on the FI tuner. It can really change the character of the bike and you can put it right back to where it was with your phone. I love my '19 fx!

People like to complain about the weight of the YZ450FX, I have one (a 2016, the OG 450FX) and everyone says it feels heavy on the stand but when people ride it they all say that it feels very light and they don't notice the weight. Why the Honda is less I have no idea but I'd guess the battery and chain are probably 2 of the differences between the bikes where the Yamaha will pick up weight. The YZ also lists a 0.1 gallon larger tank than the Honda which would be a little under a pound in fuel.
And the reason a lot of Yamaha snowbikes seem loud is because guys like to run the intakes with the filter on the OUTSIDE of the filter cover, if you buy or build a good pod filter that fits under the stock filter cover it's barely noticeable. Yes it sounds different than something with the filter under the seat but it's not loud by any means.

The aftermarket parts won’t matter as much as throwing your leg over the seat and riding. I ride with all sorts of riders and bikes and the best riders are the ones who put time on the bike not time in the shop. I ride a 2019 450fx and can do any trail or obstacle as the 2 stroke guys , mostly cause all they do is talk about how great they can ride and don’t actually ride.

Plenty of bikes can be had with good stuff for 5k. Heavier Frame, Longer Exhaust Pipe with this reverse cylinder and beefier material thickness overall. This sums it up. The question is more like: How are the KTMs so light? :O

The Yamaha stock muffler on my 2015 WR 450 was a tank.

I put a AXP plat that covers the linkage, it slaps the link a lot but works awesome, (2022) the bike stock has an eye watering top speed so you can afford to gear down. I tried a lot of combos and for racing went with 12/48 and 12/52 for the most technical of terrain. I put the hymec magura hydro clutch on it, suspension springs for my 190lb frame, tubeliss rear with either irc JX8 gekkota gummy or the dunlop AT81 EX and front shinko 216 fatty cheater. GYTR fan, enduro engineering rad cage, GYTR air filter. The maps I like are the spunky feel with connection, which feels a bit snappy but really resistant to stalling. MX power feeling for hard charging, smooth and torquey for general riding with technical sections, and a traction map that I have been playing with that retards the ignition a lot initially and learning how to smooth out the power as it builds. the power tuner is great for curing your tinkeritis! I usually get last in the expert A class in our club, but I am the only 4 stroke that places in the slow race, the others, especially the Ktm/ husky stall too easily.

I love my 22 yz450fx and have very few complaints. Other than being a bitch to start in the cold weather it’s been awesome. It might be heavy but it’s still agile. My previous bike was an old 04 yz250f and comparing the bikes, the 450 honestly didn’t feel that much heavier. I obviously can’t flick it around quite as much, because of inertia. The most notable thing was the power. It wants to rip my arms off out of a corner at times lol. And it definitely wears me out faster. I’m mainly a desert rider so the 450 is definitely my go to. but if was gunna head to the woods for the day I’d probably want the 250, just because the lack of power is so much more forgiving. Lol why not have a bike for different riding styles. Still have my old 250f now I’m looking for a 2 smoker next lol. Gunna have one of each eventually

Dumb question for you, but since you mentioned it being tough to start in the cold, are you using the cold start (choke?) option? I had trouble starting mine (also a 22' 450fx) prior to using the cold start.

@@x_Heffe_X the only time I’ve had the issue is when it’s about 30 degrees or less, I’ve used the cold start but that doesn’t always help. Ive found that putting a little tension on the throttle sometimes helps. And I don’t mean opening it just taking the few millimeters of free play out of it. I think the bike just gets flooded, and with a fuel injector its a little harder to clear it out. It also has an over cooling problem when it’s that cold outside. It’s hard to get it hotter that 120 degrees while riding. At an idle it gets up to running temp just fine but as soon as you start riding it cools right down. But I get around that by partially blocking the rads.

@@sethmurphy531 Gotcha, was just checking because I was starting mine in the low 20 degree weather recently just fine once I pushed that cold start button in, sounds like you found a workaround though at least.

I rode mine the other day in 28F weather (22 WR450) it would crank then the starter would spin free. Was a pain to start.. was kinda surprised, almost think that the battery wasn’t supplying enough juice.. didn’t feel too bad though, my buddies 22 kx450 was doing the exact same thing haha. Took us a minute to get started (I tried the cold start on and off) once it was running it was first blip of the button and it would go. I’ve started it before in about 40F and it fired up without any issue 🤷‍♂️

    • @sethmurphy531
      @sethmurphy531 2 роки тому

@@evanwilliams6352 yeah any time it’s gets into the 20s it doesn’t want to fire. It could be a battery issue but I’ve also found if it stalls while it’s cold or warming up, the problem gets worse. I think it’s just getting to much fuel and the stock plug may be a little cold. I’ve been thinking about trying a hotter spark plug to see if that helps. But like just like your WR, once it’s at running temp the problem goes away.

What size fuel tank does this have ? For a more accurate comparison maybe you should just put 1 gallon of fuel in each one so the fuel weight is the same ? I have said this before on previous weigh-ins, that aside Honda and Yamaha can’t compare to KTM who seem to shave every ounce / gram from everything they can ….Ready To Race !!! 😂

    • @thomashardy4326

The FX has a bigger fuel tank because it’s an enduro model.

Compared to the Honda. The KTM run a single cam engine and they shave a bit of weight there but makes less power. This is nit picking when you get into this stuff. Only few riders can ride and if these bikes to their full potential any way

Hey mate 👍 do you reckon we'd ever see a 2023 Beta on this channel? In Australia, a 300 TE by husqvarna is $18,200, and yet the Beta xtrainer is just a tad over $10,000. 😳

    -heavy
-power off idle is weak as hell
    -waaaay too stiff
-bends shit up every time it’s dropped
    -cranks/starts slooowly
I hate it and can’t wait to swap it out for another KTM.
