I started playing at 7 yrs old...Eventually by 6th grade I was the first chair cellist in my orchestra, and 3rd chair in the Illinois state youth symphony orchestra...I've played many of the master composers pieces in my young life at a high level....When i got into high school I decided I wanted to play sports, and gave up the Cello...Big mistake....I am now 51, and recently picked up a cello and tried playing it, and I couldn't play it at all...I am considering renting one...I remember all the hours of practice, discipline, and fatigue involved in becoming excellent at the Cello, and I just don't know if I can endure that at my age...I have had shoulder, and spinal repair surgeries...I just don't know if my body could take the strain...The Cello is a very physically challenging instrument to play well...I have been missing it lately....Young lady keep practicing, and dedicate yourself to at least 1 to 2 hours of practice a day plus an accomplished mentor to help you perfect your finger pressure, and your bow pressure on the strings...Keep going you will steadily improve...Good video...
@@AidenYeh I'm 61 and started learning over 2 years ago and am loving it - focussed practice especially scales and arpeggios makes such a difference also a good teacher !
I'm a fourth year trombone major and just started learning cello in september. Makes me happy that there are other people picking up instruments (especially cello) later on in life!
I took up cello the year before you did, at the tender age of 40. I wish I had done a series of videos like this. You are sounding great! Thank you for reinspiring me!
I’ve been playing for 5 almost 6 years since I’ve been playing, and I still love it so much! I would suggest to practice stretches/ be nice to your hands to prevent hand cramps and pains :0.
I would recommend getting tapes or stickers for the correct intonation or notes. it helps a ton! i still have mine on even though it’s my fourth year as a cellist :). i don’t need them it’s just nice to know i’m at the right spot. also, stickers for thumb placement was key to good technique. i hope this helps! lastly, i would try not to do so difficult pieces, i even have a hard time with preludes. it’s better to master the basics then go on, instead of trying to play super hard pieces right away.
I'm playing cello for three years and I Love it!It's a gorgeous instrument!Of course,I'm still learning!I would say that its going pretty well, but sometimes I can get stuck, which sucks ._. I will be practicing until my hands start falling off!I love it!The last piece I've played was Breval's "Concertino No.5".I'm pretty happy with how I played it,but there were still some tiny mistakes.I'm glad that I've found this video, 'cause it made me happy!Good luck for every cellist out there!
Your adorable. I'm 51 and started playing 3 months ago...I just love how you have progressed so far!!! You're amazing, I was cheering you on, especially when you attempted vibrato.☺️ I remember when I did my first shift (Ode To Joy), but the sheet music had me on the D string, so I played it higher on the A string, I was improvising! So to hit the high note I had to leave first position...by ear, I had no idea what note I had to hit and still don't...I DID IT! I was HIGH for the rest of the day.😆😂I don't aspire to be in an orchestra, but like you, I see myself still playing in 10 yrs. Lord willing!❤️🎻
This was a really fun and lovely video to watch, I've just started playing cello again after 24 years and starting from cero pretty much again, thanks for sharing
I'm 39 and have been playing for 18 months. Keep it up. Last year I was the first to play during the recital. I've moved up a few spots and now hear 10 years olds playing what I played last year. I've made a few recording of myself playing. Someday I'll post them.
Working on the prelude from the start is such a good idea! I'm gonna do that, even if it means trying only the couple first notes at the beginning. Thanks for the inspiration. Taking my first class soon :)

Thank you Maya you really made it If You Can Do I can do it I just love the cello I'm an older person but I see you try so hard I think I could do it too thank you for sharing this moment congratulation you did very good
Great progress, one suggestion that would improve your playing by 100% lift your left arm so that it sticks out more, and doesn't rest on the neck so much when shifting, this will increase accuracy as well as pitch. Just think about holding your left arm out more rather than down and tucked in.
Bravo to you and your attitude! I decided to try to learn cello as a way to cope with the death of my husband. I am 2 months into the journey, have been tempted to quit several times, but am keeping with it. I may or may not find peace through the cello, but I keep hoping. Your posting has increased my hope. Thank you.

You've done brilliantly in a year! Keep up the practice :) Cello rocks! I would suggest purchasing some exam books for theory/sight-reading/pieces, so that you can advance at your own pace. Bach's suites are perhaps a little advanced at the moment :) but it's good for sight-reading!
Léonie Marcel I'm sure you're doing great! You are doing very well and are due great congratulations. Your excitement is infectious, and you should be proud of your achievements. About the Bach suites: buy a recording and listen to it every day. Pablo Casals was already a very very good cellist when he discovered the Bach Cello Suites, yet he practiced them for 10 years before he was willing to play them in public. I'm working on the first Suite. In my opinion the Sarabande and Prelude are the most difficult parts of the first suite. I found the minuets and gigue easier. The Allemande and Courante are intermediate. Let me congratulate you again, and encourage you to persist. And listen to your teacher.

Bravo!
I spent 8 months learning the cello and I progressed from Suzuki Book 2 to Book 5, Danse Rustique.
I have been playing for 3 years and am seriously amazed at how far you have come... awesome! I am currently playing Gauntlet by Doug Spata, Inverno by Vivaldi, My Immortal by Evanescence(lol ik)... you should try these songs!
