@Fearless Citizen Semantically yes... but over 2000 years it referred to unique practices and way of life of a Sanatani. This goes beyond narrow definition of religion. The cosmology and theology is distinct and very inclusive embracing all irrespective of religion. Even people of other Faith's can go to have Darshan. We do not pray as in Abrahamaic religions, we do Darshan which is meeting God face to face as a witness. We welcome HIM. He does not live above but amidst and inside.

I read a history case once.
Before Warren hasting and clive Lloyd, the British envoys were visiting courts of mughals and marathas etc.
They noted how they treated indians ( brown skinned) because they never identified themselves to be indians ( hence the elite culture that persists in indian subcontinent) on the other hand they hated everything from culture to language.
So the incidence goes - some British envoy was visiting and shah jahan got so fascinated by his spectacles that he agreed to grant them whatever they wanted ( probably access to Gujarat ports) .
So they had made india so backward, at the times before even industrialization happened.
They banned printing press and destroyed temples and funded everything from canals to gifts in baghdad etc.
Not specific to mughals, but turks in general started slavery for the first time in indian subcontinent.
Now ,we have to change our mindset, please respect our Purvaj
