I like 4strokes, but this is what scares me about them. I've seen and heard of several of their engines pretty much grenading. When they blow up, they blow up!
I own an 05 too, was a great deal at the time, but early on i figured it had valve issues. Removed oem valves, edges were worn like razorblades. Put prox ss in and has been a minter ever since. Watching your vid was very reassuring. Thanks
All the Carnage and Butchery, followed by the scamming and lying. Amazing! Thankfully you're a hero and probably saved this bike AND some poor soul from al lot of misery!
Anyone with any sense would avoid piles like this like the plague., unless they needed parts from it and could buy it real cheap. Even if it was free, it will never be worth the time and money required to fix it. Especially a 4 stroke.
@@melaniecotterell8263 True, I'd even be reluctant to obtain it for free! Maybe to cut up to swap in a 2 stroke, as a side project/ experiment. but even then, so much work and time to do that right.
That bike is in a sad state but watching you bring them back from the dead is priceless...im sure it will get the love it needs and deserves. Plus the knowledge you pass on is much appreciated
Had a customer bring me a 2013 450r early last year saying he “lost compression.” The bike was completely locked up. Piston grenaded so bad that there were pieces of it inside the air filter. I have never seen a bike blow like that. Wish I could show a picture of it in my comment.
Poor maintenance is epidemic! These moden high tech 4-strokes just demand 10hr oil changes, clean air filters when needed & premium gas or *VP, Klotz, Sunoco race gas* mixed 50/50 w/premium fuel .
I'm a single dad that's been watching your videos since you picked up the Jeff ward 85 bike. I found you cause I had just bought my 85kx250. Just sold my 06 crf450r for $1,000...running...single dad life. Keep on building awesome bikes. I live in reno and could really use some help building my 1980 kx420
Had a KX 420 when I was in highschool. Talk about a bike that wants to kill you. Lol. I'm 50 years old now. I wish you luck on your build. I'm sure it is close to impossible to find parts for it. It's hard enough to find stuff for kx500s ,cr500s and the 490 s. Good luck.
Would love to see an in depth motor build. I've got an 04 CRF450r and 04 CRF250r. Still learning bottom ends, so any tips and/or info you could share on them would be awesome. Excited for this build!
Looks like the bit of valve stem poked through the piston. I've seen pics of a few crfs with pistons flipped sideways when the pistons get run for a ton of hours.
Hey Clint!! Hello from the 805!! Great content as always. I enjoyed seeing you as a judge on the Broke to Built contest with Cam!! Would love to see your version of B to B on this bike. Great candidate for a give away!! Keep up the great videos!!

hi clint been watching your channel for years and its great to finally see a bike similar to mine (crf450x) which a has a simmiler engine to these as the 450x was nearly unchanged for over 10 years currently doing a ground up build on it and turning it into a big bore 500cc with ported head, lectron carb, vortex cdi and hot cams cam keen to see what your build turns out like hopefully i can show you mine one day as its the reason i found your channel from your video on removing scratches out of plastics!!!
One thing I've learned in life is knowing better and doing better are two completely different things. I know you are a builder but would a GPX crate engine work? Keep the videos coming.
The rubber glove...... was the big laugh but the pin in the air box said it all. Flip flip flip... end of the day still a 05 crf450 🥴 love your channel thank you bra
Sell it! I myself would be stocked for rebuildable 2 stroke. The thought of rebuilding it is big part of the journey and passing one cheap n easy to rebuild goes a long way in to what you share. Love the videos. Be safe.
I've seen a bike send the rod through the case and into the transmission, but I'm not sure it was as big of a mess as this one. You've got your work cut out for you, but I think you've possibly got the best carburated 450 they made IMO.
I had a friend that owned a brand new 02 cr250r, he put well over 100 hrs on the factory bottom end. The piston disintegrated and sent the rod out the bottom of the case. All comes down to maintaining your bike. Looking forward to the rebuild.
Had an 04 CRF450 apart a while back for a guy who said "It just died while I was riding it". The intake valve keepers (cotters) let go so it dropped in the cylinder just far enough for a piston kiss which bent the valve causing all compression loss but the keepers grabbed back on the back of the stem so it didn’t drop right into the cylinder thus saving a ton of carnage I couldn’t believe how lucky he got 😂
Similar story on my $800 drz400. Guy busted a rad and kept riding till the engine broke. I got lucky because the valves stayed connected and the bottom end was good. But it did end up needing another cylinder head.
great video. my 09 450x locked up while riding honda says a valve stem broke and pieces scratched the cylinder . this happened at high speed .... they are not recommending changing the crank . is this a future problem waiting to happen?
My Honda monkey new from the dealership was filled to the top with oil, chain was seriously tight, the top of the battery looks like it was slid across the floor, two flat spots on each tire and the stearing neck and gas tank had scratches down to the metal.
I was a new rider of 2 years still with my first bike, 12 years old when this bike came out and I used to go to the Honda dealer with my father just to look at this exact bike! I'd be honored for the chance to win any bike! Look forward to seeing what ya do with it!
Hey Clint do you answer questions for people? I had my RMZ 250 completely rebuilt top and bottom end with a 270 Big bore stage 2 Hot cams. The only problem is the guy at the shop said he can't get it to idle down? I was wondering what the big bore does it need to be rejetted ? I have heard two different things I heard that you actually have to go smaller on the Jets because it pulls more vacuum with the big bore but I also hear that it's a bigger motor and needs more fuel. Hope I can hear back from you on this issue thank you God bless
I bought a 2009 crf250r that was blown and the cylinder was way worst. The piston was snapped off but the valves are fine. The person I bought off took it apart and left it apart. I bought it for 800
I did this last spring on my crf450, customer brought the bike in for a no start figuring it needed and valve adjustment, turned out to just be tired, tore it down and ended up needing a crank as well customer said F that and i picked it up cheap, all said and done after replacing every bearing and moving part on the bike, I think I am around the 2500 Canadian rubbles in parts, Probably more that it really worth but i basically have a brand new bike so i think its a win.
I bet the hole in the piston was from the exploded valve flipping over and getting smashed by the piston cause the hole has a pretty smooth taper to it like the back of the valve.
I got a 16 yz250f that literally the only thing I could save was the transmission and clutch side stuff , I picked it up for 800$ decided to fix it anyways it cost me 2k in parts but man it's a sick bike now ! Took me 4 months to find some nice cases .
When is the best time to adjust the valves on a 400ex? It's a fresh rebuild haven't took it ridin yet. It's been ridin up down the street a couple times. It's 440 11:1 comp
Theres loads of 'old' MX bikes here in Thailand where a pair of SG12s cost 3 months wages. You MUST have the SG12s to look cool but theres zero hero worship in buying a piston or regular oil changes. I got into a right money pit on a KTM which i got out of with a small profit after 14 months trying to sell it and now im sticking to CRF250Ls cos i can 286cc them for $200
At 12 years old I blew up my dads 71 CB 350 drag racing a Suzuki GT 380. Blew both cylinders off the block and starter only held on by wires. Bottom of block looked like a 5 pound sledge would drop thru. You have not lived until you try to explain to your dad that all the damage happened while you were living at the foot of the cross. LOL.
Someone that actually works for a living and has more than three brain cells, would never let all that damage happen. But, I am sure daddy will just buy me another !! What a shame !!
I've done dozens of this generation crf450 engines and I've never had issues with the oem valves even on the 05 and older ones even after hundreds of hours, however I have seen kibblewhite stainless steel valves break at less than 100 hours multiple times and I can clearly tell that the valves that were in this engine are stainless steel kibblewhite no question, I would almost bet one of the valve springs are broken as most times thats what causes the valve to drop and contact the piston. I prefer to replace the valves with either oem or prox or in mod engines delwest titanium
I have a 05 that I got brand new in 06. I have the head off it now and it needs its first set of valves. I was thinking of staying oem since they lasted a long time for me. Whats the advantage of the other brands? I'm keeping the engine stock otherwise so I'm more interested in reliability.
The worst blow up ive seen was a KTM 505 supermoto...rod let go, went through the case into the trans, split the cases apart and cracked the frame. Wasnt much left to work with on that one.

Hey I have a 2005 Crf250r, does the thing you mentioned about valves apply to 250s as well? I’m assuming it does because my bike has somewhat hard start and I can tune the carb perfectly and it still seems to run out of whack and not start without giving it throttle.
Excited to see this! Just picked up a 05 crf450r that was super roached and blown up for $375. Just about ready to fire up but have an intermittent spark. Waiting on a new stator and hopefully be ready to ride in a little while!
So you're saying the piston is not supposed to be sideways in the cylinder?😆 Man I can only imagine the sound it made when she went
for real probably sounded like a blender full of metal 😂
Well we know it didn't make the same sound that the kawasaki did when it blew the cases open 🤣🤣 (you know, that one video)
Happened to my 150r the pressed came spun n sent the exhaust valves into the piston
I like 4strokes, but this is what scares me about them. I've seen and heard of several of their engines pretty much grenading. When they blow up, they blow up!

Was the hole in the piston from the valve head, maybe it flipped and landed with the broken stem side down?
