Keep in mind they think that they are counterparts but that is not correct, analysing the lore and the Mags lorbs in the game it explains that Rivet could be another lombax from the same dimension of Ratchet but she ended in that dimension after the Tachyon's attack like do much other lombaxes, according with the Mags lorbs in Rift apart, and their feelings show a spark of romance that i think it will grow up in the future while they are together in their next adventures
I agree about this. People forget about the fact the lobax were sent across dimensions. So it's possible that she isn't a counterpart of Rachel but an actual lombax from rachets dimension that isn't related to him
In the game, Rivet only came to that conclusion b/c she saw Dr. Nefarious in Clank’s memories and concluded that “If they are counterparts, we must be counterparts too.” For Ratchet, he pull that out of nothing due to Insomniac writing. Like you said, the Lorbs suggests the Lombaxes were one centralized species that is now scattered. This is further implied when Mags instructs any Lombax listening to “come back to them” implying they were once together. Talwyn is the canonical GF but I just never found her interesting enough to care through all the yrs. My best picks would be Angela or Rivet because I like them both.
I was so caught off guard when they set up Angela to be Rachet's love interest by the end of Going Commando, only to have her flat out vanish in the next game Up Your Arsenal and pretty much the rest of the series going forward. In a way, I kind of blame the rushed development of Going Commando for why this happened. While the gameplay itself came out fantastic despite the short development period, the story itself feels muddled and hastily thrown together, which I feel explains the random love interest with Angela and the fact that Qwark shows up out of nowhere at the very end of the game with very little build-up. I've heard from sources that the franchise really didn't have a team of dedicated writers until Up Your Arsenal.
I still think Angela deserves another shot in the spotlight, the problem given from Writer's Block and further plotholes with Angela possibly being a Lombax herself, to simply make her not a Lombax and the idea I had in mind she was part of an effort to bring back her species through cloning, she being the best out of her fellow experiments and the project was considered a failure, so she isn't technically a Lombax. As for everyone not recalling the events of Going Commando when Tools of Destruction hit store shelves which I still think is extremely sus, I think it's possible Angela got some big info that in order to protect the ones she cares about she wiped every trace of her existence through memory both machine and biological and ran off to another Dimension like what was mentioned in that radio report in A Crack in Time where she vanished with Max Apogee, that's my theory based on what we know and also a pitch for an idea to do something with her, especially for a Rift Apart Sequel especially that.
I’m just gonna say this. Sasha should’ve been in the Ratchet & Clank movie! It has the Galactic Rangers & the President appears (Only as a still image at the start of the film and they used his PS2 render). We could’ve seen Sasha in modern day!
What I really what to know is what did all of Rivets hot guy love interest look like on her adventures. I'll be funny watching her crush on hot guys like Ratchet.
Great video! I really like how you went through each character thoroughly and gave some lesser female characters some spotlight as well. One think I disagree on is that I think you place a bit too much emphasis on characters interacting directly. Sometimes, what and how a character thinks about one another off screen also says a lot. Using Ratchet and Rivet as an example: 1) When transitioning between characters, they will think about each other. These lines serve as transitions, but also shows how they're thinking about each other. E.g. "I wonder what's going on with Rivet" or "Bet Ratchet's got everything handled right now", etc. Additionally, Ratchet and Rivet has asked Clank indirectly about each other several times in an attempt to know each other. 2) When revisiting Savali outside of the main questline, Ratchet will ask Clank if he "lived up to the hype" after meeting Rivet since he's the first Lombax she's met. Clank responds with his usual giggle and says "You do not need to worry about that." 3) Right before Rivet meets Ratchet, she rehearses her lines like many people do before a date. This is a tried and true trope across movies and tv shows to convey interest. Insomniac's Spiderman 1 actually did the same same thing before Peter rekindles his relation with MJ after their 6 month breakup. As Peter swings his way to meet with MJ for the first time after their breakup, he rehearses his greeting in the same manner. 4) On Ardolis, he admits that he changed his mind about not visiting the Lombax dimension because without it, he never would've met Rivet or Kit and to him, "that means something". Even though these two don't interact much directly, to me, the above examples of their indirect interactions with each other means something and paints a narrative. If I was a writer, this would be one way to show two characters having very early signs of interest. Regardless, Ratchet and Clank has never officially been about romance, so any romance with any character is gonna be relegated to the C-plot at best. I think a big majority of people who like Ratchet and Rivet-myself included-is simply because people like Rivet as a character. People tend to ship characters they like, therefore, I think it is reductive for some people to simply say it's because "they're the same species." Rivet feels like a breath of fresh air since previous female characters have been mostly one-offs, too minor to have an impact, or severely underdeveloped, such that there has always been a vacancy for a prominent female lead. My 10 yr old daughter loves Rivet and got into Ratchet and Clank because she thinks Rivet is "Pretty Cool and pretty". For me, my first choice would be Angela since my first Ratchet and Clank game was GC many years ago. I also really like Angela as a character, but she's stuck in canon purgatory, so Rivet is my second choice. Talwyn is the official GF as stated by the devs-and it will be that way until things change-but I just never really liked her as a character.
Yeah I kinda only had cutscenes to go by when making this video and hadn't actually played Rift Apart (or any of these games) in a while so there was no way I was gonna remember everything they said, but even so I still don't see those things as romantic. I think the shared sense of identity thing can sum up that most of that dialogue as well.

I was gonna type my Ratchet Love Interest Essay in the comments, but it seems someone already beat me to the punch, XD. So instead I’ll just give you my takes. As someone who has been with the series from the beginning on the PS2, I always felt Sasha was the best candidate to be Ratchet’s girlfriend (until I played Rift Apart, but we’ll get to that). From the events of Up your Arsenal to the beginning of Deadlocked, Ratchet and Sasha had the best flirty nature as well as genuine interest/chemistry. As much as I like Angela as a character, the onscreen romance was not there. Then when we made jump to the PS3 and met Talwyn…I’ll be honest, I never saw a hint of romance or chemistry between those two, besides maybe Into the Nexus, but by then it was too late for me. If they enjoyed each other’s company, I couldn’t tell ya. That’s up to headcanon. I only have what the games give me, which isn’t much. Talwyn never left a big impact on me. In the original script for Tools of Destruction, Talwyn was going to betray Ratchet to Tachyon because he claimed to know where her father was, which would have been compelling. But that never happened due to time constraints. This is just a minor example of what could have happened to get me interested in her. But it just never happened. And any implied romance between Ratchet and Talwyn throughout the PS3 days always felt forced to me. There’s a joke made by Rusty Pete making fun of them being “in a tree” as if they were a couple in Quest For Booty, and I thought it was funny because they were definitely NOT a couple. At least in my eyes. So now we have the PS5, Rift Apart, and Rivet. Long story short, Rivet took Sasha’s place on my list. The real crime is this game isn’t longer, but in the time we did have with the characters, their chemistry hit it out of the ballpark. I saw not only friendship but also a budding romance. They also just make a cute couple, and by shipping standards that means a great deal. I feel that Rivet is simply right for Ratchet. He deserves to be happy, and Rivet I believe can do that for him. Now then, when do we start discussing Clank’s love interests? 😁

If I remember correctly, Tal's status as the GF was revealed at a Ratchet and Clank panel sometime in the early 2010's where the devs disclosed they were together due to popular demand at that time. They just rolled with it after that in an artbook, comics, and a couple tweets after that-which are also considered canon. Given that Angela and Sasha were out of the picture by that time, it was like winning a competition because you had no opponents. If you only played the games, you really don't see much chemistry between them anyways. I would've been fine with Talwyn if they gave her more relevance to the story. I don't find her offensive, but I just find her to be so bland....Since 2008, they brought up her plotline with finding her dad. If they were serious with her character, they would've made some progress in that plotline with all these opportunities to do so. She can read Lombax, but now Kit, Gary, and the Monks can do that as well. Currently, what is her relevance besides being the main character's GF? My guess is that the dev still want her around, but don't know what to do with her character at this point. Rift apart would've been a great way to reintroduce her to the new generation of gamers, but all they did was throw in two quick cameos: 1) A 3-second picture of them at the archives in the ending credits, and 2) A voice line, "I wish Talwyn was here to see this", on Savali that only triggers if you stand in an obscure spot, look at the moving Archives at a certain angle when the Archives is at a specific location (it actually takes some luck to get this line to trigger naturally). By the time the next game comes out in 2029, probably 1/10 people will know who she is anyways since the writers failed to write her in in a meaningful way in Rift Apart and reintroduce her to the new generation of gamers. This is further exacerbated by the fact that all the future series games were the lowest selling games in the entire Ratchet series, according to the Insomniac leaks (Nexus sold less than a million. 2016 was the best selling followed by Rift Apart, then the PS2 games). Despite my complaints with her at that time, Into the Nexus would've been a decent sendoff for Ratchet, Clank and Talwyn. However, in Rift Apart, they decided to reopen the Lombax plot point. Clank knows that Ratchet is still lonely and desires deep down to see his "family" despite his reluctance. This ties into Alister's words to Ratchet during their fight: He stated that Ratchet "will be alone for the rest of his life" (among other things). The comics shows that Alister's words and actions really affected Ratchet-even showing him having some form of PTSD. This is why Ratchet is so conflicted and risk-adverse on seeing the Lombaxes-plot points Rift Apart failed to piece together successfully. Still, Rift Apart attempt to answer this by showing Ratchet that it's worth it to take the risk. The writer, Lauren Mee, mentioned in an interview that they intentionally had the Juice meeting Juice scene right before the Ratchet/Rivet's meetup. This was an allegory to how they are both lost, lonely, and confused but are now better off by meeting each other. After their meetup, Ratchet's already had a change of heart by the time he reaches Ardolis; asking Clank to help him find the Lombaxes because of Rivet and Kit and that "it means something". The basis for as good relationship is that the people in it better each other and that's what I am seeing here. Even if their direct interactions were sparse and could've been fleshed out a lot more, I've just explained indirectly how much on an impact Rivet-and Kit as well-have on him, and that's why I think Rivet's my top option if I were to seriously consider an option. (I still like Angela though b/c I'm blinded by nostalgia) Also, my wife was able to provide an outsider's view to this situation since she started her Ratchet and Clank journey with her first playthrough of Rift Apart two years ago. She has never had any experience with it outside of me talking about its gameplay occasionally in the past. After her first playthrough, she thinks they will get together in the sequel. She claimed she knew because of "Women's intuition", whatever that means. Just asked her again and she agrees with you; it's a probably a budding romance or the very early stages of a slow-burn. I agree as well.
It's interesting watching your video and being reminded by how much presence or relevance each of these characters have. Ratchet is a character who definitely would love to be in a relationship as evidenced by several of these scenes. And I too was one to lean in towards Sasha and Talwyn since they just seemed to click with Ratchet best. Wonder if we'll ever see them again. Great vid Miharu!
I love your point of view of these female characters, and i totally agree. I love seeing all the fan art of RatchetxRivet, but i'll always see them as just friends. The only thing i want for these two is having something of friendly rivalry(in a similar way to Sonic and knuckles)
The thing about Ratchet and Rivet’s interactions together in Rift Apart is that they can be interpreted in either way. It can be justified as romance just as much as it can be justified as friendship. Due to the nature of R&C games not being romance focused, I’d be surprised if anything official comes in future games regarding Ratchet’s relationship with anyone. I do however hope Insomniac give us some moments that are on that edge between friends/lovers. Nothing needs to be confirmed, I just don’t want my ship to be completely crushed either lol. I feel like everyone would be a little happier if Ratchet’s romantic interest is left open for each individual fan to decide for themselves. Less backlash that way too

Funny anecdote: the first Ratchet and Clank game I ever played was Secret Agent Clank, after that (which I didn't even finish back then) I never heard of or got interested in the franchise again. I think it was a year after Rift Apart came out and I said to myself: Will there be a ship between Ratchet and the Lombax from the last game? I looked, found that there was, and from then on I said to myself: I have to play the franchise from the beginning. And here I am, a full-fledged Ratchet and Clank fan who has played practically all the games (except PS4 and PS5, I don't have enough money for that... yet) and a lover of the Rivchet (Ratchet and Rivet) ship.
I ever find Talwyn was the most developped character for a romance in the Ratchet serie. Just hear her in the Nexus game, how she seems considering him a lot and emotively. Aside of that, yes Rivet is a very nice character that i liked for the naration of the latest game, but she needs more games stories before we could talk about a true romance development.

I'm definitely in the minority here, but I personally prefer Ratchet and Angela. Reason why is because the ship kind of reminds me of the Sly and Carmelita ship. Yeah, Sly kissed Carmelita by the end of the 1st game, but the 2 didn't become 100% official couple until the end of the 3rd, as their romance was building up towards per game. The Ratchet and Angela ship, at least imo, had the opportunity to build them up romantically per game, and Going Commando was a good/solid start. But instead of doing that, and because of the rushed development, as well as crunch time. We will most likely never get to see that romantic build-up.
That's exactly the reason why I felt like Thieves in Time undid a lot of their development in favour of boosting drama for the narrative (which works, don't get me wrong. It honestly does). But it kind of stung seeing Sly trick her like that, and I'm completely on Carmelita's side in feeling hurt by his actions. It's what broke the ship for me. If it wasn't for the rest of the game and the ending, well... She could always return to the Wild West and become Tenneesee's girlfriend. :)

Yeah I tried not to bring up things that have been "confirmed by so and so" because as you can see that kinda means nothing in fandoms. Talwyn was "confirmed" as Ratchet's girlfriend but people still think he's in love with Rivet. 🤷♀️

I ship Ratchet and Talwyn. Because I played Sony's PlayStation & Insomniac Games' Ratchet & Clank Future Saga games on PS3, and especially Sony's PS Studios and Insomniac Games' Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart on PS3 bonds each other, I just found it that Talwyn is the prefect main love interest for Ratchet of this franchise. Ratchet X Talwyn is my most number 1# shipping characters that I'd to ship with.
As primarily a Ratchet/Sasha shipper, I can't disagree with this. I only really played the PS2 era games, so I'm naturally biased, but even I can acknowledge that Talwyn seems to be who Insomniac wants Ratchet to be with. And I'd attribute the more fleshed out relationship they have as probably stemming from Insomniac's maturing as a studio. The older R&C games feel like innocent, light-hearted platformers in the same vein as the Spyro trilogy (at least from what I've observed), while the PS3 era and onwards R&C games are more focused on telling a big expansive story and fleshing out the world. I'm rambling at this point, but very fun video! I always appreciate being enabled to bust out the old shipper that lies deep within.

9:48 - For me, it was mostly general ignorance; It has been years since I've seen the original series and I had no idea that Rachet and Talwyn were a thing even despite Rusty Pete singing about it. Then again I genuinely have a lot of trouble describing people's character traits and identifying their relationships.
Going off who I know right off the bat, I'd have to say Rivet, based on the fact that she seems like Ratchet's type. She's inventive, courageous, worries about the safety of others, has dealt with her own burdens and trauma (Losing an entire planet in Ratchet's case, and Losing her arm in Rivet's case.), shows genuine admiration for the Lombax's general attitude towards saving both dimensions, and well, there are small hints throughout the game that the two are becoming closer as friends, which could lead to a romantic connection in the future. Even when the two come to blows over Kit. They're quick to apologise and Rivet is able to forgive her in the end. It all comes down to what ship the developers decide upon. Having heard about all the others though. I feel like Talwyn and Sasha both have a better chance at getting with him. As for Angela? I think the Internet likes the implications that come with shipping a short metalhead with a foxy tall mercenary.
I just redo all of the first three games in my ps2 emulator for nostalgic reasons. I didn't remember that Sasha has kissed Ratchet in the game, I was suprise because when I was a kid I just did not care at all about romance. Also funny enough, I remember going commando was my favourite among all 3, and the jokes are so damm good, there are different levels of lecture, and when I was a child I did not understand the subtext from most of them. The joke with Qwark telling to the monkey from florana that it don't know that it was his sister that he certainly did something with, it just hilarious. So i was curious if Sasha was a canon ship, and I saw this video recommended at a perfect time lol. Still i have no care in Valentine's day.
Rivet probably got alot of attention as a love interest cause she is the same species as Ratchet, and they occupied similiar roles, so they could naturally work together more. I understand that shippers sometimes get a little too zealous and see one interaction, or touch and think that's romance city. But I do believe Talwyn wins this out. She is Ratchets actual canonical girlfriend first off, and they genuinely have a connection that's natural and think about eachother alot. Rivet might have also been a victim of 'new player' bias. It wouldn't surprise me if alot of people got into R&C with the reboot game, or the heavily advertised rift apart(Cause it was suppose to be the game to show off the PS5' capabilities) So they may have had their first taste of the franchise that way. And seeing Rivet as the only major woman in the franchise for him, outside of the one or two lines Ratchet might have for Talwyn. Heck even people who may not have played probably saw Rivet as the character since she was a bit part of the advertising and naturally were like "Guy lombax, girl lombax, perfect".

@@SuperWorldJumper I'd say it's cause it's not forced to me. Ratchet isn't trying super hard to impress her, he's just being himself. Not over exagerating his accomplishments, they have shared interests like finding the lombaxes(All be it for different reasons) they both are somewhat alone in the galaxy for different reasons. Ratchet not having a family(Atleast blood related, his friends and clank are his family, he even says so later when he is beginning to doubt if he should find the lombaxes) Alot of their interactions don't come off as 'desperate' to get to know one another. It all happened naturally. If that makes sense?
@@Admiralkirk95 This video did a good job at displaying Ratchet’s emotion when talking with/about a girl he liked. From wanting to protect Angela, to his flirts with Sasha. One thing that wasn’t in the video was him getting nervous when talking to Sasha at the beginning of Ratchet: Deadlocked. It was this emotion that was visible to the audience. Even the one off HydroGirl got him extra expressive. You could even say those extra emotional moments are seen in Rift Apart. With Talwyn, though, it just seemed…more bland. You can call it natural, sure, but it’s not “normal” for Ratchet, at least not when compared with all the other girls on this list. (And Sasha we can safely assume he was going out with for at least a bit, so I think she’s the best example as to how he reacts to a potential love interest. Just wanted to say that.) Anyway, when it comes to the romance aspect, the chemistry, I just can’t see something that isn’t there, that isn’t presented to the audience. Told, not shown. As such, just like some people see Rivet as just being a friend, I see Talwyn as just being a friend, albeit a close one. Now I will concede there was some emotion in “Into the Nexus”, but a lot of emotional things happened in that game. Also that was the 6th game on the PS3 since her introduction in Tools of Destruction, and by then to me it was too little too late. Simply time to move on to the next girl in the next generation.

Greetings again miharu I don't know if you know or even heard any of this but some girl called Vivian medrano I believe she is responsible for creating up these two adult shows now I believe they just might fall under the category of anime but one is called hazbin hotel and the other helluva boss now keep in mind these are meant for young adults at best I believe now you don't have to dwell too deep on this but perhaps you could do some research on this and perhaps tell us the audience whether there is a chance of it becoming a game in the future now I am just informing you on this all new knowledge to you but it's your decision whether you wish to go deeper into analysis with all this so it's quite interesting now since I mentioned it's aimed at a specific target audience you should note that there are swear words in them well I should tell you there is also quite a few songs in them as well and the two main interesting characters are alastor stone from hazbin hotel and loona from helluva boss played by Erica lindbeck she is a hellhound and she is gothic and I believe she is also emotionally broken however if you see for yourself there are a lot and I mean a lot of fans of these episodes thanks for reading my comment.
Something I will say about Vendra as a lowkey Vendra/Ratchet shipper is that one touch didn't even register to me until you pointed it out, besides the "edgy bad girl GF" potential and Vendra being a foil to Ratchet, I actually found some of her dialogue to Ratchet kinda... flirty? Like probably not actually in a way to mean any genuine feelings, but she's the kind to toy with him like that. And that kind of left a mark in my mind. It REALLY doesn't help that Vendra is voiced by Nika Futterman, who voices Asajj Ventress in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, who has a similar kind of dynamic with Obi-Wan when they appear together... wait a minute, in The Clone Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi is voiced by James Arnold Taylor... the voice of Ratchet. Oh my god. But yeah, I think you analysis here is reasonable. Talwyn had the most thought put into her, it's just they never were fully able to commit to the story threads set up for her. The Rivet stuff I never got personally, not because "OH NO RATCHET IS BASICALLY DATING HIMSELF" like I'm sure some pearl clutchers would be (and even then my personal theory is that Rivet is just one of the "scattered" lombaxes that escaped Tachyon who just happened to have a lot of parallels to Ratchet's story), but as you said, everything in their interactions read as platonic to me personally, even if looking back I can see how some scenes could be read by some as romantic (especially the whole "nervous to meet each other scene", like I think the context we have makes enough sense but I can see why people could read into it with the framing it has). Angela had more implied for me, even if it was super basic and surface level.
Rivet. Why? Because to love someone else, you start with yourSEL- Okay that was a bad joke. Honestly I love these kind of "who's-better-for" videos, it serves as character analysis, chemistry and story-wise impact. And gal Ratchet has such a plethora of possible romances. My top 3 are Sasha, Rivet and Angela, with Talwyn taking they honorable spot. They really had the chance to be Ratchet's other half. I find it weird that they want to juggle with every girl he meets, gets along and bonds in each game as if they are never that sure enough to give him someone permanent. Like you said their relationship is very natural, starting off with Talwyn pointing a gun at Ratchet, then as allies, then slowly becoming boyfriend and girlfriend, and while not having a lot of screen time in the games you can make out her personality which is pretty good (I really liked how she actually helped Ratchet both by giving him intel and fought in combat) but I agree that she deserves more screen time and development later on. Luckily I could see her having a role in the implied Lombax Dimension game we will get one day.
If you listen to the Lorbs, it tells the listener that the Lombaxes are scattered across the dimensions. The Lorbs also instruct the listener to come back to them, implying they were together once before. Kit explains that Rivet’s Savali was a research outpost, explaining why there were Lombaxes in Rivet’s dimension. Ratchet mentions His dad as the keeper of the Dimensionator. If Lombaxes had counterparts, he would’ve mentioned A Kaden, not specifically his father with certainty. So prob not.
The person who "confirmed" that was a former writer whose work was all but erased in the final product. I've heard not so great things about that individual.

Keep in mind they think that they are counterparts but that is not correct, analysing the lore and the Mags lorbs in the game it explains that Rivet could be another lombax from the same dimension of Ratchet but she ended in that dimension after the Tachyon's attack like do much other lombaxes, according with the Mags lorbs in Rift apart, and their feelings show a spark of romance that i think it will grow up in the future while they are together in their next adventures
I agree about this. People forget about the fact the lobax were sent across dimensions. So it's possible that she isn't a counterpart of Rachel but an actual lombax from rachets dimension that isn't related to him
In the game, Rivet only came to that conclusion b/c she saw Dr. Nefarious in Clank’s memories and concluded that “If they are counterparts, we must be counterparts too.” For Ratchet, he pull that out of nothing due to Insomniac writing.
Like you said, the Lorbs suggests the Lombaxes were one centralized species that is now scattered. This is further implied when Mags instructs any Lombax listening to “come back to them” implying they were once together.
Talwyn is the canonical GF but I just never found her interesting enough to care through all the yrs. My best picks would be Angela or Rivet because I like them both.

I was so caught off guard when they set up Angela to be Rachet's love interest by the end of Going Commando, only to have her flat out vanish in the next game Up Your Arsenal and pretty much the rest of the series going forward.
In a way, I kind of blame the rushed development of Going Commando for why this happened. While the gameplay itself came out fantastic despite the short development period, the story itself feels muddled and hastily thrown together, which I feel explains the random love interest with Angela and the fact that Qwark shows up out of nowhere at the very end of the game with very little build-up. I've heard from sources that the franchise really didn't have a team of dedicated writers until Up Your Arsenal.
I still think Angela deserves another shot in the spotlight, the problem given from Writer's Block and further plotholes with Angela possibly being a Lombax herself, to simply make her not a Lombax and the idea I had in mind she was part of an effort to bring back her species through cloning, she being the best out of her fellow experiments and the project was considered a failure, so she isn't technically a Lombax.
As for everyone not recalling the events of Going Commando when Tools of Destruction hit store shelves which I still think is extremely sus, I think it's possible Angela got some big info that in order to protect the ones she cares about she wiped every trace of her existence through memory both machine and biological and ran off to another Dimension like what was mentioned in that radio report in A Crack in Time where she vanished with Max Apogee, that's my theory based on what we know and also a pitch for an idea to do something with her, especially for a Rift Apart Sequel especially that.

Great video! I really like how you went through each character thoroughly and gave some lesser female characters some spotlight as well.
One think I disagree on is that I think you place a bit too much emphasis on characters interacting directly. Sometimes, what and how a character thinks about one another off screen also says a lot. Using Ratchet and Rivet as an example:
1) When transitioning between characters, they will think about each other. These lines serve as transitions, but also shows how they're thinking about each other. E.g. "I wonder what's going on with Rivet" or "Bet Ratchet's got everything handled right now", etc. Additionally, Ratchet and Rivet has asked Clank indirectly about each other several times in an attempt to know each other.
2) When revisiting Savali outside of the main questline, Ratchet will ask Clank if he "lived up to the hype" after meeting Rivet since he's the first Lombax she's met. Clank responds with his usual giggle and says "You do not need to worry about that."
3) Right before Rivet meets Ratchet, she rehearses her lines like many people do before a date. This is a tried and true trope across movies and tv shows to convey interest. Insomniac's Spiderman 1 actually did the same same thing before Peter rekindles his relation with MJ after their 6 month breakup. As Peter swings his way to meet with MJ for the first time after their breakup, he rehearses his greeting in the same manner.
4) On Ardolis, he admits that he changed his mind about not visiting the Lombax dimension because without it, he never would've met Rivet or Kit and to him, "that means something".
Even though these two don't interact much directly, to me, the above examples of their indirect interactions with each other means something and paints a narrative. If I was a writer, this would be one way to show two characters having very early signs of interest. Regardless, Ratchet and Clank has never officially been about romance, so any romance with any character is gonna be relegated to the C-plot at best.
I think a big majority of people who like Ratchet and Rivet-myself included-is simply because people like Rivet as a character. People tend to ship characters they like, therefore, I think it is reductive for some people to simply say it's because "they're the same species." Rivet feels like a breath of fresh air since previous female characters have been mostly one-offs, too minor to have an impact, or severely underdeveloped, such that there has always been a vacancy for a prominent female lead. My 10 yr old daughter loves Rivet and got into Ratchet and Clank because she thinks Rivet is "Pretty Cool and pretty". For me, my first choice would be Angela since my first Ratchet and Clank game was GC many years ago. I also really like Angela as a character, but she's stuck in canon purgatory, so Rivet is my second choice. Talwyn is the official GF as stated by the devs-and it will be that way until things change-but I just never really liked her as a character.
Yeah I kinda only had cutscenes to go by when making this video and hadn't actually played Rift Apart (or any of these games) in a while so there was no way I was gonna remember everything they said, but even so I still don't see those things as romantic. I think the shared sense of identity thing can sum up that most of that dialogue as well.

@@MiharuTheFoxI never thought I’d agree so much with the Blarg on a Ratchet and Clank discussion, but here we are, lol. I was gonna type my Ratchet Love Interest Essay in the comments, but it seems someone already beat me to the punch, XD. So instead I’ll just give you my takes.
As someone who has been with the series from the beginning on the PS2, I always felt Sasha was the best candidate to be Ratchet’s girlfriend (until I played Rift Apart, but we’ll get to that). From the events of Up your Arsenal to the beginning of Deadlocked, Ratchet and Sasha had the best flirty nature as well as genuine interest/chemistry. As much as I like Angela as a character, the onscreen romance was not there.
Then when we made jump to the PS3 and met Talwyn…I’ll be honest, I never saw a hint of romance or chemistry between those two, besides maybe Into the Nexus, but by then it was too late for me. If they enjoyed each other’s company, I couldn’t tell ya. That’s up to headcanon. I only have what the games give me, which isn’t much.
Talwyn never left a big impact on me. In the original script for Tools of Destruction, Talwyn was going to betray Ratchet to Tachyon because he claimed to know where her father was, which would have been compelling. But that never happened due to time constraints. This is just a minor example of what could have happened to get me interested in her. But it just never happened. And any implied romance between Ratchet and Talwyn throughout the PS3 days always felt forced to me. There’s a joke made by Rusty Pete making fun of them being “in a tree” as if they were a couple in Quest For Booty, and I thought it was funny because they were definitely NOT a couple. At least in my eyes.
So now we have the PS5, Rift Apart, and Rivet. Long story short, Rivet took Sasha’s place on my list. The real crime is this game isn’t longer, but in the time we did have with the characters, their chemistry hit it out of the ballpark. I saw not only friendship but also a budding romance. They also just make a cute couple, and by shipping standards that means a great deal.
I feel that Rivet is simply right for Ratchet. He deserves to be happy, and Rivet I believe can do that for him. Now then, when do we start discussing Clank’s love interests? 😁
@@SuperWorldJumper Well said. I agree with a lot of what you said. If I remember correctly, Tal's status as the GF was revealed at a Ratchet and Clank panel sometime in the early 2010's where the devs disclosed they were together due to popular demand at that time. They just rolled with it after that in an artbook, comics, and a couple tweets after that-which are also considered canon. Given that Angela and Sasha were out of the picture by that time, it was like winning a competition because you had no opponents. If you only played the games, you really don't see much chemistry between them anyways.
I would've been fine with Talwyn if they gave her more relevance to the story. I don't find her offensive, but I just find her to be so bland....Since 2008, they brought up her plotline with finding her dad. If they were serious with her character, they would've made some progress in that plotline with all these opportunities to do so. She can read Lombax, but now Kit, Gary, and the Monks can do that as well. Currently, what is her relevance besides being the main character's GF? My guess is that the dev still want her around, but don't know what to do with her character at this point.
Rift apart would've been a great way to reintroduce her to the new generation of gamers, but all they did was throw in two quick cameos: 1) A 3-second picture of them at the archives in the ending credits, and 2) A voice line, "I wish Talwyn was here to see this", on Savali that only triggers if you stand in an obscure spot, look at the moving Archives at a certain angle when the Archives is at a specific location (it actually takes some luck to get this line to trigger naturally). By the time the next game comes out in 2029, probably 1/10 people will know who she is anyways since the writers failed to write her in in a meaningful way in Rift Apart and reintroduce her to the new generation of gamers. This is further exacerbated by the fact that all the future series games were the lowest selling games in the entire Ratchet series, according to the Insomniac leaks (Nexus sold less than a million. 2016 was the best selling followed by Rift Apart, then the PS2 games).
Despite my complaints with her at that time, Into the Nexus would've been a decent sendoff for Ratchet, Clank and Talwyn. However, in Rift Apart, they decided to reopen the Lombax plot point. Clank knows that Ratchet is still lonely and desires deep down to see his "family" despite his reluctance. This ties into Alister's words to Ratchet during their fight: He stated that Ratchet "will be alone for the rest of his life" (among other things). The comics shows that Alister's words and actions really affected Ratchet-even showing him having some form of PTSD. This is why Ratchet is so conflicted and risk-adverse on seeing the Lombaxes-plot points Rift Apart failed to piece together successfully.
Still, Rift Apart attempt to answer this by showing Ratchet that it's worth it to take the risk. The writer, Lauren Mee, mentioned in an interview that they intentionally had the Juice meeting Juice scene right before the Ratchet/Rivet's meetup. This was an allegory to how they are both lost, lonely, and confused but are now better off by meeting each other. After their meetup, Ratchet's already had a change of heart by the time he reaches Ardolis; asking Clank to help him find the Lombaxes because of Rivet and Kit and that "it means something".
The basis for as good relationship is that the people in it better each other and that's what I am seeing here. Even if their direct interactions were sparse and could've been fleshed out a lot more, I've just explained indirectly how much on an impact Rivet-and Kit as well-have on him, and that's why I think Rivet's my top option if I were to seriously consider an option. (I still like Angela though b/c I'm blinded by nostalgia)
Also, my wife was able to provide an outsider's view to this situation since she started her Ratchet and Clank journey with her first playthrough of Rift Apart two years ago. She has never had any experience with it outside of me talking about its gameplay occasionally in the past. After her first playthrough, she thinks they will get together in the sequel. She claimed she knew because of "Women's intuition", whatever that means. Just asked her again and she agrees with you; it's a probably a budding romance or the very early stages of a slow-burn. I agree as well.
It's interesting watching your video and being reminded by how much presence or relevance each of these characters have. Ratchet is a character who definitely would love to be in a relationship as evidenced by several of these scenes. And I too was one to lean in towards Sasha and Talwyn since they just seemed to click with Ratchet best. Wonder if we'll ever see them again. Great vid Miharu!

The thing about Ratchet and Rivet’s interactions together in Rift Apart is that they can be interpreted in either way. It can be justified as romance just as much as it can be justified as friendship. Due to the nature of R&C games not being romance focused, I’d be surprised if anything official comes in future games regarding Ratchet’s relationship with anyone. I do however hope Insomniac give us some moments that are on that edge between friends/lovers. Nothing needs to be confirmed, I just don’t want my ship to be completely crushed either lol. I feel like everyone would be a little happier if Ratchet’s romantic interest is left open for each individual fan to decide for themselves. Less backlash that way too

Funny anecdote: the first Ratchet and Clank game I ever played was Secret Agent Clank, after that (which I didn't even finish back then) I never heard of or got interested in the franchise again. I think it was a year after Rift Apart came out and I said to myself: Will there be a ship between Ratchet and the Lombax from the last game? I looked, found that there was, and from then on I said to myself: I have to play the franchise from the beginning.
And here I am, a full-fledged Ratchet and Clank fan who has played practically all the games (except PS4 and PS5, I don't have enough money for that... yet) and a lover of the Rivchet (Ratchet and Rivet) ship.

I ever find Talwyn was the most developped character for a romance in the Ratchet serie. Just hear her in the Nexus game, how she seems considering him a lot and emotively.
Aside of that, yes Rivet is a very nice character that i liked for the naration of the latest game, but she needs more games stories before we could talk about a true romance development.

I don't have much to say, because I pretty much agree with all your takes here.
Speaking personally I kinda liked Captain Sasha simply because I thought she had some of the better bits of characterization personally.
I'm definitely in the minority here, but I personally prefer Ratchet and Angela. Reason why is because the ship kind of reminds me of the Sly and Carmelita ship. Yeah, Sly kissed Carmelita by the end of the 1st game, but the 2 didn't become 100% official couple until the end of the 3rd, as their romance was building up towards per game. The Ratchet and Angela ship, at least imo, had the opportunity to build them up romantically per game, and Going Commando was a good/solid start. But instead of doing that, and because of the rushed development, as well as crunch time. We will most likely never get to see that romantic build-up.
That's exactly the reason why I felt like Thieves in Time undid a lot of their development in favour of boosting drama for the narrative (which works, don't get me wrong. It honestly does). But it kind of stung seeing Sly trick her like that, and I'm completely on Carmelita's side in feeling hurt by his actions. It's what broke the ship for me. If it wasn't for the rest of the game and the ending, well...
She could always return to the Wild West and become Tenneesee's girlfriend. :)

Honestly all your points were spot on in my book.
I ship Ratchet and Talwyn. Because I played Sony's PlayStation & Insomniac Games' Ratchet & Clank Future Saga games on PS3, and especially Sony's PS Studios and Insomniac Games' Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart on PS3 bonds each other, I just found it that Talwyn is the prefect main love interest for Ratchet of this franchise.
Ratchet X Talwyn is my most number 1# shipping characters that I'd to ship with.
As primarily a Ratchet/Sasha shipper, I can't disagree with this. I only really played the PS2 era games, so I'm naturally biased, but even I can acknowledge that Talwyn seems to be who Insomniac wants Ratchet to be with. And I'd attribute the more fleshed out relationship they have as probably stemming from Insomniac's maturing as a studio. The older R&C games feel like innocent, light-hearted platformers in the same vein as the Spyro trilogy (at least from what I've observed), while the PS3 era and onwards R&C games are more focused on telling a big expansive story and fleshing out the world. I'm rambling at this point, but very fun video! I always appreciate being enabled to bust out the old shipper that lies deep within.
There is still part of me that wishes Sasha had ended up the canon girlfriend.

9:48 - For me, it was mostly general ignorance; It has been years since I've seen the original series and I had no idea that Rachet and Talwyn were a thing even despite Rusty Pete singing about it.
Then again I genuinely have a lot of trouble describing people's character traits and identifying their relationships.
Going off who I know right off the bat, I'd have to say Rivet, based on the fact that she seems like Ratchet's type. She's inventive, courageous, worries about the safety of others, has dealt with her own burdens and trauma (Losing an entire planet in Ratchet's case, and Losing her arm in Rivet's case.), shows genuine admiration for the Lombax's general attitude towards saving both dimensions, and well, there are small hints throughout the game that the two are becoming closer as friends, which could lead to a romantic connection in the future.
Even when the two come to blows over Kit. They're quick to apologise and Rivet is able to forgive her in the end.
It all comes down to what ship the developers decide upon.
Having heard about all the others though. I feel like Talwyn and Sasha both have a better chance at getting with him. As for Angela? I think the Internet likes the implications that come with shipping a short metalhead with a foxy tall mercenary.
I just redo all of the first three games in my ps2 emulator for nostalgic reasons. I didn't remember that Sasha has kissed Ratchet in the game, I was suprise because when I was a kid I just did not care at all about romance. Also funny enough, I remember going commando was my favourite among all 3, and the jokes are so damm good, there are different levels of lecture, and when I was a child I did not understand the subtext from most of them. The joke with Qwark telling to the monkey from florana that it don't know that it was his sister that he certainly did something with, it just hilarious.
So i was curious if Sasha was a canon ship, and I saw this video recommended at a perfect time lol. Still i have no care in Valentine's day.
Ratchet and rivet is the best love
Rivet probably got alot of attention as a love interest cause she is the same species as Ratchet, and they occupied similiar roles, so they could naturally work together more. I understand that shippers sometimes get a little too zealous and see one interaction, or touch and think that's romance city. But I do believe Talwyn wins this out. She is Ratchets actual canonical girlfriend first off, and they genuinely have a connection that's natural and think about eachother alot.
Rivet might have also been a victim of 'new player' bias. It wouldn't surprise me if alot of people got into R&C with the reboot game, or the heavily advertised rift apart(Cause it was suppose to be the game to show off the PS5' capabilities) So they may have had their first taste of the franchise that way. And seeing Rivet as the only major woman in the franchise for him, outside of the one or two lines Ratchet might have for Talwyn. Heck even people who may not have played probably saw Rivet as the character since she was a bit part of the advertising and naturally were like "Guy lombax, girl lombax, perfect".

@@SuperWorldJumper I'd say it's cause it's not forced to me. Ratchet isn't trying super hard to impress her, he's just being himself. Not over exagerating his accomplishments, they have shared interests like finding the lombaxes(All be it for different reasons) they both are somewhat alone in the galaxy for different reasons. Ratchet not having a family(Atleast blood related, his friends and clank are his family, he even says so later when he is beginning to doubt if he should find the lombaxes)
Alot of their interactions don't come off as 'desperate' to get to know one another. It all happened naturally. If that makes sense?
@@Admiralkirk95 This video did a good job at displaying Ratchet’s emotion when talking with/about a girl he liked. From wanting to protect Angela, to his flirts with Sasha. One thing that wasn’t in the video was him getting nervous when talking to Sasha at the beginning of Ratchet: Deadlocked. It was this emotion that was visible to the audience. Even the one off HydroGirl got him extra expressive. You could even say those extra emotional moments are seen in Rift Apart.
With Talwyn, though, it just seemed…more bland. You can call it natural, sure, but it’s not “normal” for Ratchet, at least not when compared with all the other girls on this list. (And Sasha we can safely assume he was going out with for at least a bit, so I think she’s the best example as to how he reacts to a potential love interest. Just wanted to say that.) Anyway, when it comes to the romance aspect, the chemistry, I just can’t see something that isn’t there, that isn’t presented to the audience. Told, not shown. As such, just like some people see Rivet as just being a friend, I see Talwyn as just being a friend, albeit a close one.
Now I will concede there was some emotion in “Into the Nexus”, but a lot of emotional things happened in that game. Also that was the 6th game on the PS3 since her introduction in Tools of Destruction, and by then to me it was too little too late. Simply time to move on to the next girl in the next generation.

Doing a Shipping Ranking video is always a gutsy move, as you always run the risk of accidentally stepping on someones toes who likes a ship ya personally don't care for or agree with. Greetings again miharu I don't know if you know or even heard any of this but some girl called Vivian medrano I believe she is responsible for creating up these two adult shows now I believe they just might fall under the category of anime but one is called hazbin hotel and the other helluva boss now keep in mind these are meant for young adults at best I believe now you don't have to dwell too deep on this but perhaps you could do some research on this and perhaps tell us the audience whether there is a chance of it becoming a game in the future now I am just informing you on this all new knowledge to you but it's your decision whether you wish to go deeper into analysis with all this so it's quite interesting now since I mentioned it's aimed at a specific target audience you should note that there are swear words in them well I should tell you there is also quite a few songs in them as well and the two main interesting characters are alastor stone from hazbin hotel and loona from helluva boss played by Erica lindbeck she is a hellhound and she is gothic and I believe she is also emotionally broken however if you see for yourself there are a lot and I mean a lot of fans of these episodes thanks for reading my comment.
Something I will say about Vendra as a lowkey Vendra/Ratchet shipper is that one touch didn't even register to me until you pointed it out, besides the "edgy bad girl GF" potential and Vendra being a foil to Ratchet, I actually found some of her dialogue to Ratchet kinda... flirty? Like probably not actually in a way to mean any genuine feelings, but she's the kind to toy with him like that. And that kind of left a mark in my mind. It REALLY doesn't help that Vendra is voiced by Nika Futterman, who voices Asajj Ventress in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, who has a similar kind of dynamic with Obi-Wan when they appear together... wait a minute, in The Clone Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi is voiced by James Arnold Taylor... the voice of Ratchet. Oh my god.
But yeah, I think you analysis here is reasonable. Talwyn had the most thought put into her, it's just they never were fully able to commit to the story threads set up for her. The Rivet stuff I never got personally, not because "OH NO RATCHET IS BASICALLY DATING HIMSELF" like I'm sure some pearl clutchers would be (and even then my personal theory is that Rivet is just one of the "scattered" lombaxes that escaped Tachyon who just happened to have a lot of parallels to Ratchet's story), but as you said, everything in their interactions read as platonic to me personally, even if looking back I can see how some scenes could be read by some as romantic (especially the whole "nervous to meet each other scene", like I think the context we have makes enough sense but I can see why people could read into it with the framing it has). Angela had more implied for me, even if it was super basic and surface level.

Honestly I love these kind of "who's-better-for" videos, it serves as character analysis, chemistry and story-wise impact.
And gal Ratchet has such a plethora of possible romances.
My top 3 are Sasha, Rivet and Angela, with Talwyn taking they honorable spot. They really had the chance to be Ratchet's other half.
I find it weird that they want to juggle with every girl he meets, gets along and bonds in each game as if they are never that sure enough to give him someone permanent.
But, he has great chances, no doubt.
Also, I loved the girls' drawings after each analysis! They we're SO cute!

I agree with that Talwyn is Ratchet's BEST love interest. Like you said their relationship is very natural, starting off with Talwyn pointing a gun at Ratchet, then as allies, then slowly becoming boyfriend and girlfriend, and while not having a lot of screen time in the games you can make out her personality which is pretty good (I really liked how she actually helped Ratchet both by giving him intel and fought in combat) but I agree that she deserves more screen time and development later on.
Luckily I could see her having a role in the implied Lombax Dimension game we will get one day.

If you listen to the Lorbs, it tells the listener that the Lombaxes are scattered across the dimensions.
The Lorbs also instruct the listener to come back to them, implying they were together once before.
Kit explains that Rivet’s Savali was a research outpost, explaining why there were Lombaxes in Rivet’s dimension.
Ratchet mentions His dad as the keeper of the Dimensionator. If Lombaxes had counterparts, he would’ve mentioned A Kaden, not specifically his father with certainty.
