I control my gain with my volume knob, but a volume pedal can be used before time based effects, for those swells(and the repeats are still there) and controlling the overall volume, while keeping the signal the same(yes, some color the tone, but not as much as any drive pedal). I used a volume pedal for awhile, but ultimately I just didn’t need it for what I was doing, and would rather have that real estate with different effects. I like using an expression pedal, that can be used as a volume pedal too. That’s probably the best of both worlds.
It’s just a volume potentiometer, exactly like you’d find in your guitar, but in a wah casing to use with your feet. Jhs pedals have a great video explaining it, and the different ways to use one!

Regarding Potentiometers it's not the metal that wears out but the graphite contacts
volume knob is tone saturation
