This year it will be 85 years ago that Germany elected the Nazis to power, or will it? Well... as most events in history it isn't quite that simple. There is no majority for anything in Germany at this point. You see, in 1932 Germany is still a diverse, democratic state. But it's been under attack for many years now by populist, partisan interests tearing it apart into fractious, sometimes destructive opposite forces. In essence, they can be grouped into three camps:
    1. the mainstream centrist parties on the left and right that want a parliamentary, socially tolerant democracy.
    2. the far left that wants to overthrow the parliamentary democracy and start a revolution to create an authoritarian, socially ultra-liberal, rule by the working class
    3. the far right that wants to overthrow the parliamentary democracy to create a totalitarian, socially reactionary, rule by a strong man.
Now, that is the left to right landscape and as you shall see that is also how the election results play out in alliances. So try your best to get rid of your prejudices and preconceived notions - because for many of you things are not the way that you have been told. And if for no other reason than saving us the trouble of having to police these comments too much - please, please try to remember our rules. They are not there to quash freedom of speech - they are there so that we can keep the comment sections turned on. When we don't police them it never takes long for videos like this to descend into a hatefest full of death threats and calls for mass murder. You might think that's cool, but we don't and we know that most of the world doesn't so respect that - for the sake of democracy if nothing else.
    *RULES OF CONDUCT*
STAY CIVIL AND POLITE we will delete any comments with personal insults, or attacks.
AVOID PARTISAN POLITICS AS FAR AS YOU CAN we reserve the right to cut off vitriolic debates.
HATE SPEECH IN ANY DIRECTION will lead to a ban.
RACISM, XENOPHOBIA, OR SLAMMING OF MINORITIES will lead to an immediate ban.
PARTISAN REVISIONISM, ESPECIALLY HOLOCAUST AND HOLODOMOR DENIAL will lead to an immediate ban.

@Salmon If you actually read or listened to the reviews not bought and paid for by Disney you'd know that identity politics in Star Wars is all feminism since they're stuck working in a setting without convenient allegories for real races. If you want to know why the Star Wars sequels are a toxic feminist power fantasy use the search box. It's practically all any Star Wars fans talked about for about a year. Yep - even members of Communism - practice Capitalism. Even Communist China has more cottage industries than does the United States (while China calls itself The People's "Republic" of China and they call themselves practicing the economics of Communism - but not really - they actually cherry-pick form a broad range of economic policies - some Communism, Nationalism, Socialism, and Capitalism - all mostly controlled by Oligarchs, just like in Russia, the United States, etc. we all seem to be under the thumb of Oligarchs these days - they pick what works for them and ignore what does not work). Capitalism (or as I call it, "Human Behavior") is a natural form of economics. Capitalism was not born from a manifesto nor any guideline or political uprising nor even from any school of economics. Rather Capitalism was born when Eve sold Adam on the idea of eating the wrong fruit from the wrong tree, and Capitalism and Lucifer have been going strong ever since. All economic system from time to time will fail - but Capitalism is the only one that is self-healing and Capitalism is what all failed policies turn to when they fail. Capitalism is by no means perfect, often full of corruption, and a tendency for wealth to gather in corners, thus currency available shifts too slow. There was an economic system used long ago in recorded history that did work really really well. It was not central to whatever economic bartering or currency exchange system that was used - at the time it was under a Monarchy - but still, this economic system worked so well - that apathy and corruption sort of melted down and watered down. This economic system would really work wonders if used with Capitalism. It was never given a name - so I will give it a name - I'll call it a Vested Economic System. IF interested in learning how a Vest Economic System would work - reply and I'll provide an outline. It really is not complicated either - it is a very simple system - and like I said - the one time in history it was tried - it worked well - it will work even better today. At the core of any economic system is (food - without food all else will fail) - then natural resources - then housing - etc. And right now the Trump bubble is wonderful - however, I warn everyone - the conditions are extremely dangerous when the Trump bubble does eventually burst. Unlike, the Reagan bubble when it burst - the population conditions are far different for Trump then they were for Reagan - this nation needs to adapt Vested Economic - if this Republic is to survive.

your mom...okay...Communists applied the "theory" however it suited them the most. Marxism doesn't apply to any century except the 19th when it was contrived. People haven't lived in communes (I'm not sure that they even did in the 19th century) except for the hippies. All Communiats wanted was the power the aristocrats had before they were removed from govt. Their entire scope was to gain as much moolah as they could stealing the country's resources (that's how former Communist bosses achieved the wealth the have). I hope I'm not boring you, but I lived in that system till I was 16.

If around 50-70% of your elected representatives don't want democracy, its a miracle it held for even a handful of years.

Spartacus took it from this poem:
THE RELATIVITY OF EVIL By Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī (born 1207 AD - died 1273 AD)
There is no absolute evil in the world: evil is relative. Recognize this fact.
In the realm of Time there is nothing that is not a foot to one and a fetter to another.
To one a foot, to another a fetter; to one a poison, to another sweet and wholesome as sugar .
Snake-venom is life to the snake, but death to man; the sea is a garden to sea-creatures, but to the creatures of earth a mortal wound.
Zayd, though a single person, may be a devil to one and an angel to another:
If you wish him to be kind to you, then look on him with a lover’s eye.
Do not look on the Beautiful with your own eye: behold the Sought with the eye of the seeker .
Nay, borrow sight from Him : look on His face with His eye.
God hath said, “Who so belongs to Me, I belong to him; I am his eye, and his hand, and his heart.
Everything loathly becomes lovely when it leads to your Beloved.

      /ˈsōSHəˌlizəm/
      noun
a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.
synonyms: leftism, Fabianism, syndicalism, consumer socialism, utopian socialism, welfarism; More
policy or practice based on the political and economic theory of socialism.
synonyms: leftism, Fabianism, syndicalism, consumer socialism, utopian socialism, welfarism; More
(in Marxist theory) a transitional social state between the overthrow of capitalism and the realization of Communism.

Another great episode. You guys rock! I hope you have plans to go into some detail about Kurt von Schleicher when the time comes. I remember from Shirer's work that he acted as a sort of kingmaker (chancellor maker) during this period which led to the demise of the Weimar Republic. I'm reading a bit more about him. The article suggests that both he and the Defense Minister were alarmed at the election results of 1928 which favored the Social Democrats who opposed military spending (which kind of reminds me what The Chieftain said about development of military forces in France which ran afoul of the Socialists who feared military coup). The Social Democrats were probably spurred to this political victory by their release in December 1926 of documents which described the secret cooperative projects between the Reichswehr and the Soviets (an event described in a thesis on the Soviet-German Tank Academy at Kama by Ian Johnson). The article on von Schleicher suggests the results of the 1928 election convinced him to work towards Weimar governments that would exclude interference by the Social Democrats altogether via the use of articles 25, 48 and 53 of the Weimar constitution, thus allowing him and his pick of chancellors to abuse Hindenburg's constitutional powers as they did to marginalize the Reichstag. (As an aside, I'm curious if I'm looking at a typo or else have missed 1932 Part 1 of 4.)

Communist activists did attack but were stopped on the side streets by the Police already before they reached the actual procession. Goebbels chose to inflate that attack, later even by faking newsreel footage of the attack reaching the funeral procession.

Stuff like this is way undertaught in civics. Here in Canada the basic idea is that you can draw a direct line from WW1 Versailles to WW2; this is a rather fatalistic way of viewing things that leaves serious historical figures like von Papen off the hook and make it more easy to say a line like "Sure he seems a little crazy, but being elected president will make him more moderate".

  • @kaczynskis5721

While it is now pitched as "extremists of the right" being used against "extremists of the left", at the time it seems the Nazis were seen by conservatives as perhaps over-enthusiastic defenders of the established order, whereas the KPD were seen as a threat to it. It would probably never have occurred to von Papen to try and use the KPD, but he did think in those terms vis-a-vis the NSDAP.
German press baron Alfred Hugenberg was a leading conservative right politician, not a Nazi as such, but his press tended to give favourable coverage to the Nazis, and if a Nazi-KPD street clash took place the press tendency was to blame the KPD.
The Nazis were not particularly concealing what they would be like in power. During the summer of 1932 there was particular violence in Silesia, partly because of the presence of ethnic Poles. A Polish KPD sympathiser named Pietrzuch was beaten to death by Nazis who showed up at his dwelling - the Nazis wore SA uniform. One of Pietrzuch's eyes was poked out with a billiard cue. The killers were arrested and sentenced to death for aggravated murder, but Hitler declared his total solidarity with them, and one of his deputies stated that the idea Germans could be sentenced to death for killing a Communist "and a Pole, at that" just showed how corrupt law was in the Weimar Republic. They were not executed and were in fact released after Hitler came to power the following year. The Third Reich would in time kill many Poles, and many Communists.

It should be noted that a large part in this was the fact that the liberal parties, instead of putting up a direct resistance to Von Papen’s takeover of Prussia, instead decided to sue the government. The German courts, mostly holdovers from the previous Reich, intentionally procrastinated on ruling against Von Papen, and their ruling, when it did come, was too weak to stop anything.

@Fabian Kirchgessner I would even go further than that - had von Papen not been able to pour so much poison in Hindenburg's ear, the November election would have led to another free election in 1933 to resolve the hung parliament (instead of the sham elections that we will now witness next year). As you point out the economy was already recovering by then and things would have looked very, very different.
However, arguably the die was already cast when Hindenburg allowed von Papen to make himself Dictator of Prussia - as we shall see that move is what enables Göring to take over that position and interestingly enough, Göring's position as Ministerpräsident and Reichsstatthalter of Prussia turns out to be much more instrumental in the power grab than Hitler's as Kanzler.

    • @LightFykki
      @LightFykki 5 років тому

@Fabian Kirchgessner Yes, but that is what I meant to say. The support for Hitler and his party rose again after the events with Bruenning and they continued so with each new election. What I mean to say is even if they somehow continued to stall the government and not elect Hitler as chancellor, it would just again delay the inevitable and even possibly make the Nazis stronger once they actually got to power.
Also, it is in the end a bit difficult to say what could have happened in either case. For example, had the Nazis decided to continue consolidating their power and not invade Poland in 1939, but actually a few years later how it was originally planned, then maybe we could have even seen a much grimmer scenario.

SPD and KPD could not meet and make a coalition government because of mutual hostility after the events of 1918, but also because of the Comintern's doctrine of "Social Fascism". This theory was dictated by USSR and was very popular in KPD in the 1930s, and claimed that because capitalism was on the brink of collapse, social democracy blocking the way of the workers to power with laws or calls for reformist approach, was a left "wing of fascism". SPD also hated KPD for trying to destabilize Weimar Republic , which was an offspring of the social democrat Ebert.
After the fall of Weimar Republic and the extermination of the German Communists, the Soviets were shocked. They realised that the previous doctrine was not only obscure, but also allowed the fascists to more easily gain power, and finally eradicate communists. Thus, the Comintern proposed the new doctrine of the antifascist 'Popular Front"; wherever possible communists would form alliances with socialists or socialdemocrats to prevent the rise of fascism. This approach had mixed results; in France in 1935 communists and socialists had formed a left-wing government that prevented the descent of the country towards right-wing authoritarianism, but could not prevent Franco winning the civil war in Spain (although this is much more complicated).
It remains a big "what if" , if the SPD and KPD could have formed a coalition in 1932, because the majority of the Germans before Hitler becoming chancellor were in fact left-wing , socialist leaning.
PS. Also, in USA the communists after the events in Germany were supportive of Roosevelt and the New Deal.

    • @varana
      @varana 5 років тому +6

Papen was certainly quite instrumental in *getting* Hitler into power, and bears a lot of responsibility for the end of the Weimar democracy. But he was nowhere near what Hitler did later.
Papen's "dictatorship" was very much limited at the time - he was still massively dependent on Hindenburg's good will, and had next to no allies in German politics, at all. And even during his chancellorship, the remnants of the Weimar system were still in place - there were parties, and elections, and some form of separation of power.
Hitler did away with all that, and transformed Germany into a dictatorship that was very different, and much more profound than Papen ever achieved, or even wanted. Papen was an authoritarian monarchist, not a totalitarian dictator.
