Sometimes I just load almost randomly a plugin and just see what's happen, something you normally wouldn't think of for that sound - but that's a good question if you do something like that a long time you have your ways to do things and it's hard to break out of the box
A good thing is to play the song in another genre, let's say "Chelsea" to play it in Reggae style, this trick brings wonders :D Another thing I do, it's a bit unusual :D I listen to the track several times and go for Yoga / Meditation and meditate on the track - I go through my mental music catalogue and get inspired by other sources that I remember Another thing I do - if it's a gig or a mix - I try to get positive inspiration, let's say for a gig I check AC/DC 20 min. solo's and see the fire and fun in Angus and co and get the vibes For the mix I check out for example interviews with Evil Joe Barresi, not to see the plugins or moves, but get the ideology: "Make your Mark" for example :) And then I just play around with the track ! Get a basic balance, try new things and see after a while if production changes can be done and just enjoy the process and have fun haha Hope this makes sense

Thanks so much for the multitrack Matt! (if you see this). I'm just about done with the mix now. Already put some production elements on there too, but wondering about putting anything else on it. Might leave it be because it's already a MEGA track. I really enjoyed mixing it. :)

No, they sound the same for me as well. My best guess is they’re artifacts that occurred when they were tuned due to how much extra harmonic content was occurring in the guys voice (grit) you don’t hear it mine most likely because of the verb and delay I used.
It bothers me slightly that on the Pultec plugin there are only two screws holding it into the "rack", and one is slightly crooked. Adds character though i guess.
Great breakdown, and to be honest I'm a little proud of myself for finding I already make lots of the same choices, some of them do the dot. In any case I think that's a nice opportunity to go a little out of my usual box.
That Marshall JMP tone is the guitar tone I'm always trying to get with amp sims. And I always fail. I like how it's enough gain to smooth out the transients so it doesn't sound too "plucky" the way DI guitars often do. But it's not so high gain that it becomes tubby or undefined. I have several JMP amp sim clones, but I've never gotten anything to sound that good. I guess that's the advantage of having a Kemper... Or maybe I'm just doing something wrong.
This stuff is so educational, thanks alone for that! The real secrets are in that guitar tone, I wish he spilled the beans a bit more on the chain he used for that.
Second day watching this I like that emits that the drums are not real but he still put some plug-ins on them but explains why he does what he does Hope to see a Metal Rock mix with Live Drummers soon Thanks 🙏
Very cool video! Question... is he coming out d/a to the SSL comp then back in A/D into the plugins then back out d/a to the SSL Fusion then back a/d to print in protools?
Man, love checkin' out other engineers ways of mixing. I've been doing a Chris Lord-Alge/my own kind of mix process for while now but tried some of his stuff and I'm getting a nice result!
I learned so much, thanks. It's just a pop song faked to sound like hard rock. Pretty tasteless this "Chelsea" thing. But useful for learning tricks and stuff. Matt is a natural teacher and I really appreciate it
Hey Matt! Great job with the mix. I love your use of depth and layering the tracks with a lot of detail. Chelsea really hooked you up with some quality tracks to work with! Matt, do you usually tackle a mix like this in one Session? You talk about listening through and envisioning the end result before touching faders. Thanks for the in depth look into your process!
Hey! I apologize, I must have forgot to include that. I will admit, since I had to record this all alone due to the pandemic, it was kind of hard to remember everything. Ok my drum bus I’m using a parallel FET style compressor and an API 550B boosting 2.5k and 12k shelf by 2DB On the time bus I’m just using an L1 to even out the volume. Good luck with the mix!
@@Producelikeapro sweet ,thanks so much, very kind of you to share all this, really appreciate your time and talent passed on during these crazy days, stay safe sir
Teemoe Griffin absolutely!! Ryan and the band are very encouraging and like myself believe in empowering people! It’s a great song will really help many people get their resumes out there!
Hell yeah! The mix on Chelsea is really good, the drum tones are really good and the multitrack session is really well produced! Already working on my mix. One question for you Warren! What LUFS level do you recommend to master the song to upload the video/send the mp3?
They said on the competition page that "it isnt a loudness competition, and that the tracks will all be level matched by the judges (paraphrased)" so I'm thinking less is more in this case. I probably wouldn't even do a full master to be honest.
Will the mixes be judged on the genre style too, like Matt talks about with the 'Woahs' at 1 Hour 34 and the Green Day vibe etc? If I was to try and go for a more Underoath or A Day To Remember sound would that get marked down for not being the original pop punk sound? Some great info in this video. Looking forward to seeing what I can do with it. Cheers
Hey Matt love this breakdown! Just wondering to you really have your top end boost that sharp at 12k on the pultec plug on the master bus? Just wondering because I have a warm audio clone (I know its not the real deal, but it adds some mojol) and when I boost my high end with it all the way sharp it gets super harsh. I have better luck with it on like 8 or almost all the way broad so its a smaller Q.
I have a question for Matt, I have a project and we have some songs that i would love to hear your mixing on, its programmed drums and bass modern rock type music, do you mix stuff that isn't from a signed band? Would love to hear how our songs sound with your mixing and production. Thanks.

Downloaded tracks did a volume balance, panning etc no eq no compression, those tracks are more than just well recorded to my ears they are 70% already there, I get now what you are asking for that 30% will be ones unique swing to the mixing and mastering. I also had a listen to the release on facebook which kind of confirms that. So my question is how much of the song can be creatively changed? Why I ask is because if all we did was mix and master I think it will just turn into a loudness war and whose mix sounds wider. I have not watched the video, its day time here in NZ, sun is out time to be outside, I will watch later. lol
i was thinking the same, everything sounds quite good, just push the faders and you got it, but not so easy to find that last 30% to make it a hit. At some point I feel he's just throwing plugin after plugin and you don't need that much, but still very interesting in general to find the real important points.
Also in the first verse is a distortion thing happening in the vocals. I'll keep it in my mix, because its not possible to correct that. Other stuff happening will be corrected
Since it's a doubled vocal, I deleted the part with that distortion glitch, copied the one from the double. I then pitch shifted the copied vocal by a couple of cents, offset it by a couple of milliseconds. Problem fixed
This is awesome content and really valuable. Great work. My one criticism is the editing out of the swear words. I mean we're not children. And that's just how he chooses to speak. Too much.
