  • A Frenchman on trial for recruiting strangers to rape his heavily sedated wife was on Wednesday excused from court for the rest of the week after his health deteriorated, the presiding judge said. FRANCE24's Monte Francis reports. FRANCE24's Sharon Gaffney speaks to Anne Cecile Mailfert, president of the Foundation des Femmes charity. She says that the trial is an opportunity to bring awareness to medical workers about sexual violence by chemical submission.

She is so brave to stand up in court and face down all those men who raped her. Imagine the strength that it takes to see them troop in everyday and know what they did to her. She is standing tall and putting the shame on them where it belongs. She comes every day in nice clothes and holds her head high, dignified with no tears. Letting them know she is not broken. Thank you for saying this. It is because society is patriarchal. Men are used to having a say in the way the world is governed. In South Korea it was alleged that husbands formed groups to volunteer their wives to be sedated, assaulted, filmed and shared within the group website. The horror for these women was how little justice was served. The sentencing (if you can it that) was that of shoplifting a candy bar. It is alleged that the women could no longer function or simply remained in the marriage. Men have no respect for our bodies because the law has none. Geeze

Actually, rape is taken very seriously in the US as it is in most countries, with those found guilty drawing long prison sentences. The problem is though that it is often just a case of "He said, she said" with no evidence as to whether or not there was consent. And just to be clear, I'm not referring to this case where there obviously was no consent.

It's incredible that so many men thought it was OK to have sex with a woman who was unconscious, and that they did this based on another man's word that she was consenting. Her husband's behaviour was appalling, but those men's behaviour was equally abhorrent. Not one single man who saw his ads or attended the scene, not one doctor that she saw about gynaecological problems thought to say there was something seriously wrong in the way this woman was being treated? Of course there are decent men around, but how often do women hear them challenging other men about their attitudes and behaviour? Men need to step up.

I saw a documentary on Arte TV years ago about the rape culture in France ("Elle l'a bien cherché" from Laetitia Ohnona). It was just mind-boggling. The young woman complaining of rape was being interrogated in a police station. In front of her, there was a huge poster of Fifty Shades of Grey. On her side, there was a poster for a local swingers' club, together with a black, sexy, above-the-knee boot with pointed toe and super high heel exhibited like a trophy on a set of drawers. Then on another shot, the policeman was in a different room. Pinned on the wall hung a set of martinets... I was flabbergasted.

Put him in jail no more trial. Life in in prison!

I respect their courage to go through this process after the nightmare they endured. This is extreme and his heath is irreverent. This brave woman is opening up the doors for others to end the brutality of the taking of another person to seek sexual gratification and the trafficking that this clearly demonstrates
I send my most profound condolences to this woman and am grateful to see the system supporting her truth. Rape can happen once and your life is forever changed by it. It’s a life sentence and he deserves the same in prison. And those people who actively participated are complicit and need to stand trial.
Time is up and change is here.

I want them to do whatever it takes to make this trial airtight, even if that means giving him days off. I don't want there to be ANY grounds for him to say the trial was unfair and be let out of jail or given a new trial.

These horrors were brought to light (and law) because the police officers responded to an earnest call, and they took it SERIOUSLY.

this is a travesty. He was totally fine until the time came to face the music. it's disgusting that even now he's given priority over his wife. he should be immediately seen by a doctor and forced to testify unless he's on his deathbed (and he's clearly not). and by the way, his mental health is completely irrelevant, his lawyer should be ashamed of herself just mentioning it.
