- A Frenchman on trial for recruiting strangers to rape his heavily sedated wife was on Wednesday excused from court for the rest of the week after his health deteriorated, the presiding judge said. FRANCE24's Monte Francis reports. FRANCE24's Sharon Gaffney speaks to Anne Cecile Mailfert, president of the Foundation des Femmes charity. She says that the trial is an opportunity to bring awareness to medical workers about sexual violence by chemical submission.

That man should not be allowed to skip a minute of court - he didn't feel sick when he was torturing his wife.
nobody cares about his comfort. he certainly didn't care about his wife's comfort!
Lots of men care

“Up to 20 years.” UP TO 20 YEARS?! Are you telling me that this monster can only get UP TO 20 years?! That’s absurd!
Unfortunately, world wide, no one cares about rape inThe world. Children are raped and their abusers get 2 or 3 years in the USA.
@fabmissb I agree with you he should get life, although at his age, it is possible he will never come out. What about the men he allowed to rape her? Do they get just a slap on the wrist???
20 years is an extremely long sentence.
He'll be gone in another 5 years at most, but yeah very soft sentence.
More than what you could expect in the US...which, understandably, isn't a standard.
She is so brave to stand up in court and face down all those men who raped her. Imagine the strength that it takes to see them troop in everyday and know what they did to her. She is standing tall and putting the shame on them where it belongs. She comes every day in nice clothes and holds her head high, dignified with no tears. Letting them know she is not broken. But their lives will be broken, because they committed a horrific crime they thought they could get away with.
As they all walk in covering their faces. If I were in charge, none of them would be allowed to hide!
@@lifesize1119 Then it's good you're not in charge. The fact that people aren't forced into the open by media in some European countries is so important if you compare it with the US where everyone's face is plastered everywhere, just because they're suspected to have done something bad.
Rape isn’t taken seriously in the US either. Seems to be a common thing in every country that violence against women isn’t taken seriously.
by men. Men need to change.
Thank you for saying this. It is because society is patriarchal. Men are used to having a say in the way the world is governed. In South Korea it was alleged that husbands formed groups to volunteer their wives to be sedated, assaulted, filmed and shared within the group website. The horror for these women was how little justice was served. The sentencing (if you can it that) was that of shoplifting a candy bar. It is alleged that the women could no longer function or simply remained in the marriage. Men have no respect for our bodies because the law has none. Geeze
@@guinealove3744I read about that. Also, there seems to be an increase in men say very derogatory things about women.
@Aerie925 very true....unfortunately don't know of any country where it is taken seriously....
Actually, rape is taken very seriously in the US as it is in most countries, with those found guilty drawing long prison sentences. The problem is though that it is often just a case of "He said, she said" with no evidence as to whether or not there was consent. And just to be clear, I'm not referring to this case where there obviously was no consent.
He should have been forced to attend. Probably trying to find a way to check out and avoid consequences.
It’s a ploy to escape nd should not be permitted
I think it's just an extension of his controlling behaviour. She wants what was done in the dark to be exposed to the daylight, and he is denying her that.
Yes. He had the wellness to procure pills, organize rapes, set up cameras, administer drugs, do a bit of editing, go out and do some upskirting. Lie to wife. Yes, most likely. He's a passive aggressive coward.
I don't think it's just France that is shocked. Women all over the world are horrified. Trying to elicit any sort of empathy for that pos is sick. Poor him having to sit in a chair and face what he's done..not! He's being allowed to carry on being controlling and abusive.

Chemical submission? What a strange term yet again to decriminalize RAPE.
The term was used in conjunction with the term "rape", and in translation it might be direct translation, my french isn't good enough to know. Either way, she's an incredibly brave woman.
They explain that chemical submission is when someone is drugged without their consent, so it’s still rape.
I think it's an adaptation of 'chemical straight jacket'.
Whenever I come across Thoreau's quote 'Most men live a life of quiet desperation', I think this is especially true of women, especially in patriarchal cutlures (where women are encouraged to stay silent). The medical profession have been enabling this, by prescribing psychotropes to women, medicalizing their distress. 'Mad, bad, sad'...
It only qualifies the type of action that has been taken to allow the rape to take place
It's not a euphemism for the act of rape, the term chemical submission refers more to the "weapon" used, in the sense that this was the method he used to incapacitate her before the assaults. It's like saying a kidnapping victim was restrained by rope, that's not a euphemism for assault either.
Now he's weak. Right.

My 78 year old mother told me this year for the first time that she went through that as well. Drugged, abused and recorded in mid 90s in a Dentist chair. The aggressor was my school friend’s married and “respectful” father who offered her a dental treatment for lower the price 😢
Rape culture is probably more common than we are willing to accept or think it is. France isn't alone in this, the world is in deep denial when it comes to this. As long as nothing drastic is done, It will remain as a fact of our society.
The main difference on what happened here is: he got caught. If he hadn't, he would've continued. He can't simply be an exception. The "Me too" movement happened for a reason.
The fact that this has happened in France is not a surprise.

@@curtisalex456 Happens everywhere, but yes, in certain countries it's more accepted to do so openly in public. And now Abbé Pierre, yet another can of worms of horror. Sexual crimes are far more common than people want to think it is.
@@user-gz5mx2nd5p This has been the case all the time, it's not a 'new' or an 'increasing phenomenon'. There's a reason why Roman Polanski fled to France.
What needs to change is that men need to take responsibility and police other men's behaviour. It's incredible that so many men thought it was OK to have sex with a woman who was unconscious, and that they did this based on another man's word that she was consenting. Her husband's behaviour was appalling, but those men's behaviour was equally abhorrent. Not one single man who saw his ads or attended the scene, not one doctor that she saw about gynaecological problems thought to say there was something seriously wrong in the way this woman was being treated? Of course there are decent men around, but how often do women hear them challenging other men about their attitudes and behaviour? Men need to step up.
Why would they need to. Second class status suits the first class.
You don't believe that defence?!! They KNEW she did not consent. They organised in a chat room where the title was all about a woman not consenting AND were told to do things like warm their hands so that the wife wouldn't accidentally wake up whilst they were raping her. The HUSBAND said this.
They are ALL sickos. A bunch of sickos who deliberately gathered together via the internet specifically to do something like this.
I couldn't agree more. As children, girls are taught all kinds of things to keep us safe. But for many it's never enough because men too need to take a few steps towards a safe society for their mothers, daughters and wives.

The EU court is for countries, every EU country still has their own court system to deal with national cases. This case is being handled by a French court because it is one French citizen suing other French citizens for crimes that happened in France.

And people wonder why we women stay single...
I saw a documentary on Arte TV years ago about the rape culture in France ("Elle l'a bien cherché" from Laetitia Ohnona). It was just mind-boggling. The young woman complaining of rape was being interrogated in a police station. In front of her, there was a huge poster of Fifty Shades of Grey. On her side, there was a poster for a local swingers' club, together with a black, sexy, above-the-knee boot with pointed toe and super high heel exhibited like a trophy on a set of drawers. Then on another shot, the policeman was in a different room. Pinned on the wall hung a set of martinets... I was flabbergasted.
Here in the UK, police arrest us grape VICTIMS and if our grape-ists are of a certain ideology that is above the law, then it's us that get accused of being the grape-ists. Even if we are severely disabled as I am, children, old women... we get charged with the grape of our grape-ists and arrested.

Well how handy for him🤔he got sick just when he was needed in court!!🤷🏻♀️ Cheers and more power to Gisele and her daughter👏
Oh….now he gets sick.
20 years is crazy. Should be much more than that.
At 71, 20 years is enough. Not so for the younger perpetrators, though, who will still get to live a live after serving 20 years.
He shouldn't be allowed to sit ever again
This is so sickening how could a husband betray his wife in this horrific way!?! I'm just glad she is alive to stare down each of these monsters and watch justice being served!
This is such a sickening crime
@10:50 She asked a question regarding the mayor, but the guest is talking about the lawyers??? The mayor needs to get replaced.
Put him in jail no more trial. Life in in prison!
I respect their courage to go through this process after the nightmare they endured. This is extreme and his heath is irreverent. This brave woman is opening up the doors for others to end the brutality of the taking of another person to seek sexual gratification and the trafficking that this clearly demonstrates
I send my most profound condolences to this woman and am grateful to see the system supporting her truth. Rape can happen once and your life is forever changed by it. It’s a life sentence and he deserves the same in prison. And those people who actively participated are complicit and need to stand trial.
Time is up and change is here.
you know what else is crazy in this case ? One man puts an ad online to come SA his wife, and almost 100 men show up.
I wonder if these people do this to others. Like is it a ring
Are we supposed to feel sorry for that wicked man.
This is embarrassing for France. Good job France.
I want them to do whatever it takes to make this trial airtight, even if that means giving him days off. I don't want there to be ANY grounds for him to say the trial was unfair and be let out of jail or given a new trial.
What on earth was the motive of the husband?
To get off by the idea of other men using his wife, is called a fetish and it has a name cuckhold ... He also was training another men to do that to the men wife, there is an article, apparently he went to the ,an house to teach him how to make her wife sleep and he also participate in the rape of the man woman .... The dude is a sadits pos that get off of abusing women , yet for many manh years he has a family man with two kids, a good man RIGHT ??? Thats why she NEVER thought her mental holes were done by his loving husband
Control.
These horrors were brought to light (and law) because the police officers responded to an earnest call, and they took it SERIOUSLY.
This is an unbelievable horror.
What a brave woman!
this is a travesty. He was totally fine until the time came to face the music. it's disgusting that even now he's given priority over his wife. he should be immediately seen by a doctor and forced to testify unless he's on his deathbed (and he's clearly not). and by the way, his mental health is completely irrelevant, his lawyer should be ashamed of herself just mentioning it.
