    From a bass player's perspective when I hear this John Taylor masterpiece I immediately hear, like all of you, the smash hit "Rio." "Rio" is my favorite DD song, so it stands to reason "Last Chance on the Stairway" was always #2 for me. Listen through and you will hear other elements from other DD hits. The ethereal synthesizers present right from the start of the song takes me back to "Planet Earth" and the interlude that begins at 2:09 is a just like the break in Rio for the sax solo, but I also hear the "Hungry Like the Wolf" break. Thanks again Troy for allowing me to choose this song, I'm truly honored.

      Agreed. But, while it is strikingly simile to Rio in many ways, it still stands on it's own merits. Thanks for the insightful comment Michael.

      Thank you Michael. No problem, thanks for the heads-up about JT's birthday. I love using stuff like that to select my uploads and hate when I miss them as I most likely would have had you not mentioned it. The video suffered a little bit because it was still blocked for a few hours after it's scheduled release... I think it might have had something to do with a time-zone difference or something... but it's picking up momentum. In any case, I am glad that you liked it. Take care Michael.

    Brilliant cover! You nailed it, tricky ghost notes and all. This has always been my fav DD song for bassline. Gives me a newfound appreciation for the young John Taylor who must have been in his early 20s when he came up with this stuff. Well done, sir!

    I think John's distinctive playing style, with the syncopation and slap and pull slides etc., these elements are incorporated in many of DD's songs, so people notice that and say "oh this is just like this other song and this other one", when they're actually different...but he's using those same stylistic techniques so they can seem the same if listening casually. Anyway, thanks for the video, you play great! I've been learning bass lately and kind of used Rio as a tutorial. I watched your vid at .5 speed and that main octave progression sounds soooo funky! View to a Kill is another fun song to play.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks, but to be honest, and tone matching is purely coincidental. I don't really possess the skills needed to do anything like that. I just get a sound I'm happy with and don't change it at all from song to song. In this case, it may sound more similar to John's bass because it is a similar year, make, and model. As I've said to a few other people, this song probably has just as many ghost notes as Rio does, bit I find it to be much less taxing. Maybe it's a touch slower than Rio?

    Between their First album and Rio, John really left his best skills on the table and what I really found very shocking was, he just started playing by listening to Motown. I’m sure it woulda taken others several months, if not years to get to Johns level. Excellent job. I can really learn a lot from you especially with Johns lightning quick notes this song brings.

    • @errbt
      @errbt 2 роки тому +2

      John Taylor actually switched from bass to guitar in 1979 when Duran Duran added Roger Taylor on drums, replacing the drum machine of Nick Rhodes, so it was in fact over a year from then until the first album, and then he had another year full of touring to improve to the point of his highly developed playing on Rio in 1982, which, while still extremely impressive, makes more sense. The cool thing is you can trace his development as a bass player directly through the lineage of Girls on Film. The first demo version (here: ua-cam.com/video/6BGEGH_TWiI/v-deo.html), from September 1979 with singer Andy Wickett, done right after John had switched to bass (actually, he played the guitar on the demo as well), features very rudimentary playing. Then the EMI Air studios demo from July1980 (here: ua-cam.com/video/zttFN6HtcFI/v-deo.html) shows the development of both the song (now that Simon Le Bon had joined) and the bass style used in the final version, but a touch slower and still more rough around the edges than the final album version, recorded in December of 1980 and released in 1981 (here: ua-cam.com/video/xEEYZcSyeXk/v-deo.html).

    Troy: outstanding player as usual, you never disappoint. I always loved the driving bass lines that John laid down in Duran Duran. I always felt his melodic and colorful basslines really filled in the backdrop while simultaneously and aggressively thrusting the chord changes forward. In my view when you fill in those dead air spots with constant motion it really builds a solid foundation in the song. As a bassist myself I am always looking to put in those passing tones and chromatic approaches as applicable to keep that motion propelling. I am sure you get what I mean. Patrick

      Thank you kindly. Yes, I agree, John Taylor found his own unique voice on the bass within the music of Duran Duran and it was a big part of their sound.

  • @wolf762x51
    @wolf762x51 4 роки тому +5

    Ditto. Another great cover, of one of John's "stuff it with ghost notes " period songs. I do love them though. This one is easier for me to play correctly with more consistency than Rio. Rio is so much more taxing to me, but I probably play it more than anything else. I want to thank you for doing this one, as I had mentioned it a while back. Another bass line of that era that is very interesting, is Late Bar. The timing of the first four notes in the verse is a bit behind the beat, or ahead of it, in the first two verses, but after the break, and back into the verse again, he changes the timing , and it's interesting.
    A very 80s song, with a big John Taylor influence, if you haven't tried it or heard it, is Paramore's Hard Times. It's a fun song to listen to and to play on bass. You may have done it already. If so, forgive me, my mind isn't what it used to be, and it wasn't all that then.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  4 роки тому

      Thanks. Same here. While I find the songs very similar, I have a much easier time playing this one than I do Rio. I'm not certain, but it may be a slightly slower tempo. I don't think I've ever heard "Late Bar", but I'll have to check it out. Have not heard the Paramore song either, but I'll try and make the effort. Thanks Charles and take care.

John is such a great player and I loved his style and sound. Especially since I was influenced by a lot of the same funk and disco players he was. But on the flip side I loved rock too and was a big Maiden fan. Loved Kiss and other theatrical and fun bands. They just don’t make music like they used too.

      Thank you. Yeah, you really have to keep your eyes out for them when they pop up for a decent price. I got this one for a very reasonable price and the Red on was even cheaper, like $650, I believe, which is why I couldn't pass it up. I missed out on a few nice ones that were right on the border in terms of price.

    Absolutely amazing, I don't know this song, but I want to give it a try. It sounds so much like Rio with more rest areas. Wow 5 people took the time to click on this with so much hate. You played the song like you wrote it. Flawless and with grace. So what's the hostility? People are just dicks. If you don't like the song...don't watch. And if you don't like Troy, first off Fuc......., anyway, don't watch his videos. Is it that he hasn't done Free bird? If so go find someone that does, and take you thumb with you. Anyway, Troy you are awesome and I give both my thumbs. Thank you for taking time to make these videos for those of us that always look forward to new stuff. Also, you're awesome for giving a fan a song they wanted and mentioning them,I'm sure you made their day. You are the best Fonzy. Thank you buddy. Have an amazing week. Cheers

      @TJH3113  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks Tommy. Yes, it's similar to Rio, but I didn't find it to be quite as tiring as that song. Perhaps the tempo is a touch slower? What I think happened with the 5 dislikes (and it's just a guess) was that the video was released before it had been unblocked, by a couple of hours. I thought I'd scheduled it correctly, but it might have been a time-zone thing. Anyway, I think the dislikes were because the video was blocked. I mean, why would someone dislike what they could not see. 3 of them have been recanted and my usual 2 remain, which I always expect. Thanks for taking a protective position though. I appreciate that. Take care. We're on vacation this week... just slumming around.

      TJH3113 Sweet. Enjoy slumming around. That's my favorite vacation. That's right we didn't get quarantined, so a vacation is quite in order. Ok I can understand the 3 but the 2 are dicks. You're my friend and I'll always stand up for you. I'm defiantly going to give this one a go. It is the next step to Rio. Have a WONDERFUL Vacation Fonzy. Enjoy your free time with you bride. Cheers friend.

    Ever thought about doing some Bernard Edwards covers? 'Nard was the main influence on Taylor, and it shows.
    My favorite Edwards bass lines other than the Obvious "Good Times" by Chic are "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge, and "Spacer" by Sheila and B. Devotion. Those latter tracks were Chic collaborations.

    Are you getting that sound out of the amp and pedal alone, or is it partially due to a computer program you have it running through ?
    I'm just trying to get a decent sound but all I have is a small fender rumble bass amp and it's not that great by itself.

    • @TJH3113
