- Today we have a very special commission, there is a big Artwork needing storage, and the only place to put it is on the wall of the Chamber gallery in Rangiora, New Zealand. What better solution is to use beautiful handmade Harakeke NZ flax paper to form a 'Cloak', something that covers and protects with Aroha and Love.
Meet the Artist, Nathan Pohio, and spend the day with us making the paper, running the the flax leaves through our noisy and frightening yet unfinished 'Fibre Stripper' and generally running around having fun!
Flax fibre mills were once common in NZ, a big industry making ropes for sailing ships and string for hay bales. Big steam driven mills now no more. It was said that when they started up, you could hear them five miles away! Our one is table top size... um.... not quite so noisy.
