  • In Part 3 we look at pulping natural fibres and cotton rag for hand papermaking. We will explore using hydropulpers and Hollander Beaters. Lots of noisy fun complete with trains just across the road!
Introduction to the Little Critter Hollander Beater project.

Thanks so much Mark - great fun seeing the whole range of beaters - the little beaute is ADORABLE! My critter has been happily working away for over 15 years, and I still love it! One weekend in January 2018, it even made an appearance at the Denver Art Museum as part of my papermaking demo there - truly, a transformational tool, without which I could not have become the artist I am today.

Mr. Lander, I'm glad I came across your video. Now I make a hollander in the size of 130 * 50 * 20 cm, diameter of a drum of 22 cm.
Advise to choose the electric motor, power and speed, which is the number of revolutions per minute of drums in your hollander.

This machine is adorable and rocking, I have a doubt, do mind sharing that how "mm" will be the gap between the beater roll and the beater plate ?

Hi, Thanks for your question, The roll lowers to contact point... that's where the beating takes place, the bars are blunted ( leading edges slightly rounded) and the pulp acts as a lubricant between the two surfaces. The bars and bedplate are stainless steel... they will never wear out :-) You can make them of aluminum ( Far easier to work with)and they work fine for cotton rag and plants ..as long as you have stop bolts ..they will wear away without them ! Best from Mark in NZ

    Here's your comment in English:
Hi there, my friend! I’m really interested in making handmade paper, but I don’t have any specific resources or information about it. Could you recommend a comprehensive resource that covers all the details?
    Thanks so much!
If you'd like me to make any adjustments, let me know!

Hi Mark, I love watching your videos so much. Our paper group bought one of your hollander beaters ( Little Critter). I am interested in making cotton rag paper but wondered if it would be too soft and delicate. I am intending on using old flanalette Pyjamas. Previously we have made paper with recycled matt board and mainly plant fibres. I haven't been very impressed with the plant fibre even though I am keen to use plant fibre. It tends to be really crispy and crinkly and I am wanting to print with it or paint on it. Is there any plant fibre that you can suggest you know of that is good to mix in that is grown in Australia (Queensland). Sorry I know that probably a difficult question.

Hi Mark! Love the video series! My Little Critter is working great here in northern New York State. Question for you and/or others: When you use it for beating cotton rag, how long does it usually take? Should I beat it for 5-6 hours? Thank you!

Hi Todd, Thanks for watching, I think for as long as it takes to get the pulp you want... the big 10lb one runs on a 1.75 hp motor.. so it takes a bit longer .. the tiny
Beaut runs on a 1/2 hp ... so the pulp is done sooo so much faster. Depends on the rag too, some materials are tightly woven and take longer. The main thing is to have fun experimenting.

Hello I like your holland beater machines very much. I worked with Aïdée Bernard! it is possible to buy a small holland beater machine of your manufacture. my workshop is in France. I will take the base without the main engine with a shipment via DHL, what is the price with transport and tax, as well as the manufacturing time.
    thank you in advance

I got a real kick out of watching this with captions (sitting in a waiting room and not wanting to disturb others) ... the 'English" subtitles can't quite handle the kiwi ;-)
