The 2000s Town Cars were much worse than the early to mid nineties Town Cars. I don't know why they stopped making them with the metal bodies. The 1990 to 1995 Town Cars are some of the greatest luxury cars ever made.

***** The 2000s town cars were more stylish but they weren't as big, they didn't ride as smooth, and they were almost all black on black while the 90s town car had many different interior and exterior color options.

I have a 99 and a 97 TC. I must admit that the 99 model has a better overall quality but lacks lots of the small luxury items the 97 has. Such as soft close trunk lid, variable power steering support, softer suspension and seats. Aside form that, they are basically identical, such as every Town car from 1992-2011.

I rewatch this video every now and then to get a little bit of nostalgia about the days my dad would drive me in this. But the engine blew and we had to junk it. In a way the car was a perfect reflection of him. Big somewhat underappreciated and from a different era, something you only miss when it's gone.
The days the cracked leather seats were the first thing you looked at while on your way home from school, or played with the lighters or the switches on the door. When you could go and lay across the back seat when you aren't feeling good and didn't want to wait until going home to sleep a little. Pushing the cigarette lighter while your Dad was too busy talking on his Nokia 3310 because "It did the job" and he didn't need those new age flip phones to pretend to look cool. Because he wasn't afraid to look outdated. The kind of thing you'll look once and say "Do you know what decade it is?" It's wearing an airforce hat despite you not knowing anyone that served in the military, let alone the airforce. Going into Walgreens to get a can of Budweiser wearing a Santana shirt from 1982 because "it's my lucky shirt" even though it had five cigarette stains on it despite you quitting it for good for the third time a few years ago.
It's the "I'll get it done my way not yours" of cars.
    Miss you Dad. Love you

As a Brit and somebody who had a Lincoln Town Car as a free upgrade once while on a business trip to the US and after couple of days hating the thing with a passion for its size, crappy build quality, awful squeeling tyred rocking and rolling on every bend handling i realised what this was all about... And that is; getting you to where you need to go at a sensible pace in comfort. It wouldn't work in Europe, but then i have never had to drive 3000 miles while in Europe. Good Job Lincoln, you know your market.

It befalls nearly every American male driver at some point in their lives to have to spend all day driving one. But even as an American there are times when I'd like something a little simpler, a little more efficient.

Thing is it will never break down, eventually every 160,000miles the cam chain and tensioners will wear out....but thats about it. Also, the handling can be fixed...its kind of the American thing, buy car, make it better. the build quality isn't bad to be honest when compared to a Mercedes, or Jag yeah I went there...no way could other cars take punishment and age like these do.
I should probably say I was comparing to the 300E and the mid 80s XJ cause thats the only ones I had experience with.

my second car was a hand-me-down powder blue 1992 towncar, bought new by my grandfather and used for yearly cross-country drives for family reunions, it ran ~800k miles on the original powertrain before the vacuum seals in the AOD finally gave out and it would have cost more to fix than it was worth. The engine was still running smooth, even though I had to run 50w synthetic to keep it from burning a quart a week. I still miss that car. It never broke down until it quit the last time.

These cars are durable, but they do have things to watch out for.
Plastic intake manifolds that crack, especially those with a plastic coolant crossover pipe which risks the engine ingesting coolant should this pipe leak inside the manifold. A revised intake with an aluminum crossover pipe fixes this.
Although front end wear is a thing with any car, balljoints are a wear item you must look out for on the Ford Panther vehicles. Check them periodically. Replace them when necessary. Use quality balljoints, such as those by Moog, for a lasting repair.
Many of these cars use auto leveling rear air ride suspension. The air bags are a wear item that must be replaced when necessary. When the time comes, such as because the old air bags look distressed or have failed, replace with new air bags or refit the rear suspension with standard gas-charged shocks.
Power window regulators are known to fail. Repairs are possible by replacing broken nylon pieces (how-to videos on UA-cam) or just replace the regulators when necessary. Pain in the butt to do, though,as you have to drill out rivets that fasten the regulators onto the doors.
The HVAC is vacuum actuated. The vacuum lines can fail. Repair is replacement of the vacuum lines.

I see 4.6 Panthers all the time with 300,000+ miles and no issues what so ever out of the engine and transmission. The 94-95's were the best with the fully metal intake manifold and better transmission controls. As for the air ride, buy $100 total cost for two coil springs and slap them on. The only other thing would be the blend door actuator in the dash that usually breaks every 10-15 years. The drivetrains are typically problem free for 300,000 miles or more. The bodies and interiors hold up very well also.

The Lincoln Town Car has a special place in my heart. My grandfather would own a Town Car... well, not own... Lease. He leased them and got a new Town Car every two years or so. My grandparents lived in Florida and we would visit every summer, and it would be exciting every few years to go and check out the new model that he got. I remember this exact year of Town Car. All those buttons, faux wood trim pieces, the compartments, the cigarette lighters, the space, the seats, how the car rode, the instrument cluster... all of that takes me back! Course, as a kid I would play with all those buttons and compartments and whatnot! And annoying my dad as he drove us to Orlando from Tampa in the process!!

I put the shifter in drive and, stepped on the gas. And roared away on a dirt road into the sunset.
With Neil Young blairing through the speakes, "KEEPON ROCKING IN THE FREE WORLD!"
Although I as a swede love and cherish my Volvo Wagon, sometimes it's nice to be 'merican.

yep... why they do this? well, in my opinion, to make the engine last a lot longer... and that the engine can stand all the abuse it will get and not break...
cheap simple solution to make the engine last long, without precision engineering... which is how modern 4 cyl engines get their 200+ horses without turbos... of course, abuse one of those and you'll break the engine in a few years... those would be overclocked engines... xD
off course, you won't be winning any races... but that's not the point of this car...
      cheers!
btw: I never liked the looks of this freeking car... but now that Im old, and looks are starting to take 2nd or 3rd place in my priority lists... this car do makes sense... the old farts were actually right! xD

rick9021090210 Actually Rick, you're not really correct regarding modern 4-cylinder engines pushing 100hp/L. The naturally-aspirated K20Z3 in the 2006-2011 Honda Civic Si could rev to 8300 RPM stock and had awesome reliability. When I had that car I drove it like I stole it frequently, and one time doing a mountain run I had it above 6000 RPM for a solid 20 minutes. Ended up putting 100k miles on the engine and never had an issue, just regular maintenance.

One of my neighbors in Wyoming was selling his 2009 Towncar for $10K. It had about that many miles on it. Garage kept. He was a retiree and basically used the thing to drive to church and back. I wanted that thing so bad, but I opted to save my money instead. I absolutely regret not purchasing it. I've ridden in Towncars before and absolutely adore how cushy they are. There's nothing like it now-a-days, and I miss them dearly.

He goes out to his car and comes back with the Lincoln badged roll of duct tape that came in the original emergency road side kit. It worked well enough to bandage a gas line! True fucking story.

As an Englishman I do love making fun of massive American engines that don't make a lot of power but I must also admit that back in the 90s when I was working for Land Rover the Rover 4.6 V8 we used was only 250hp, so you weren't to far behind us. But of course we do have to remember that the original Rover v8 was developed from a Buick V8 so maybe it was a little American at heart.

I asked the driver if that was the actual distance it had driven, he said yes. He has had it since it was brand new. It was still running the original engine. I can't fathom how that thing has survived this long.

    • @syncmaster710n14

***** Constantly changing parts?? maybe that says more about American cars than European, I just sold my Volvo S80 it had 246,900 miles on when I sold it, In the 9 years I have had it the only parts it has had is maintenance stuff like brake pads, filters and a cam belt, oh and a clutch but I think that had more to do with me teaching my sister to drive in it lol.
I think it really comes down to fuel prices, here in Europe petrol has always been expensive so manufactures have had to make there engine efficient and they have been doing it that way for years, where as in America fuel is cheap so it was only logical that if you wanted more power you made it bigger.

Darren W I purchased this car from Mr. Regular's grandmother's estate sale. His father is a nice guy. The CD changer disappeared at some point, but yes it has the memory seats.
I'll have take your word on the stereo - unlike the premium stereo in my 88' Mark VII it doesn't have equalizer knobs and it doesn't actually say JBL anywhere on it. What was the standard radio like if this one was optional?

    • @darrenw4621
      @darrenw4621 8 років тому

+Daniel McLean in all honesty, the standard radio was crap. Low quality. The door speaker grilles specify on the 1990-94 Town Cars as to if they have JBL or not, and the equalizer is adjusted by pressing the "audio" button. And the odds are that the factory subwoofer needs to be re-foamed or replaced, (6.5" subwoofer, had to go through this process on my 93 and 96) the JBL gives a lot clearer sound and better response.
