Just had to drop a comment for this awesome game. It will never leave my collection. Such an masterclass in board game production and presentation. The terminator miniatures are still some of my favorite space marine sculpts all these years later.
Space Hulk is always the game I use as an example of "a perfect game" along with Chess (which I hate, but that's another story). The rules are so tight, the miniatures are unrivalled, the cardboard so thick you could build a house with it. Great video ❤
Your channel is perfect for me. I shelved this game for a long while and was inspired to dust it off and give the marines another mission. This one feels the tension all the time. Sometimes you feel like it will all be a cakewalk and the next you are on the ropes. I buy a lot of games you recommend. The latest is the Flying Ostriches. Man that one is fun! You post the video and I will watch it. Happy Holidays!
I bought Flying Ostriches and Floating Castles, and a lot of others, based on his review as well. This game, however, I already had. I'm glad he made this video. TLDR: Ditto, what you said. 😃
Back when I played the arcade game it captured my imagination. This RPG filled the void. Yep, this channel will get you reach for your wallet. Great adventures to you!
I only own SH 2nd Ed; at the time 3rd & 4th editions were published, they were too expensive for me. Now that I could afford, I wish there was a 5th edition upcoming!
Appreciated the Here's Negan reference for a solo/coop game that provides similar tension! I have memories playing Space Hulk as a kid, but now I'd much rather play a cooperative than competitive game when possible.
There is a Barnes and Noble edition version of this in the Space Marines Adventures line, Tyranids Attack. I just saw it today. It’s $35. Less table presence and only 5 Space Marines, but you can totally see what they are going for.
@@TheDungeonDive The new one, Tyranid Attack is a direct re-skin of Labyrinth of the Necrons and is not Space Hulk in any way beyond that they used the art/graphics for the floor tiles.
Good choice for a forever game. I purchased a used 1st edition copy on eBay in the early 00’s, and definitely bought the 3rd edition in 2009. Space Hulk fans might enjoy Forlorn: Hope. It’s currently out of print but supposedly Worthington Publishing/Pungo Games is going to release a new edition.. great episode, Daniel. Thanks
Floron: Hope -- looks cool. Another one, a nice little smart game is "The Awful Green Things From Outer Space". And of course the latest Alien franchise game, where they use pips as well.
2nd Edition is quite good too in fact I wish GW would have incorporated some of its mechanics into the later editions; especially the flamer and Assault Cannon rules.
This one's a classic and yes, one of the best productions ever (maybe tied with Mechs vs Minions?). There are some solo community variants that I'm keen to playing
I've been a fan of Space Hulk ever since I discovered the PC DOS version of the game back in the 90's. I've played every digital version of it ever since. Never played the tabletop version of it however, but I do own a sealed copy of the 3rd edition.
Well put. It is great minimalist game with high tension. But bare in mind this is not a dungeon crawl -- there is not exploration here. It is more tactical skirmish game in "dungeon". But there are tons of custom home-brew expansions. Genestealer-cults and other races to fight with or against. I have this game as my most-valuable/precious game in my collection. Not because of monetary value, but just a state of art value. Perfection. Highly recommend, but for some odd reason GW does not produce it. Even though the latest W40k introduced new models for Genestealers and Space Marine Terminators, this game was not re-released. Probably because the models are scaled up compared to older miniatures, it would be even more difficult to to apply them in the board game. But I would say it would be worth it to custom build this game as a hobby project. I would make custom tiles (there are print versions out there) and with 3d printing options available, one could scale the models to 80% smaller and have a nice board game size. There are free rules and expanded rules in FB group.
The genius of Space Hulk is that it is perfectly designed for situations where one person knows the rules and one person has never played. Just let the noob run the 'Stealers. Super forgiving, simple to understand and incredibly fun for them. I remember the evil fun of having a 'stealer blip that represented ZERO 'stealers (It was supposed to represent a "scanner malfunction". I think they may have removed this in newer revisions?) and tormenting the marine player by keeping it lurking just out of line of sight so he'd waste points keeping a terminator on overwatch waiting for me to reveal it. lol I always wanted to make multi-level 3d Space Hulk maps using Necromunda terrain from the old box set.
There's is a board game of Aliens that works something similar to S.H. Think it was rereleased quite recently. The minis are lovely, but unless you are a fairly proficient painter, its best not to paint them IMO!!
I Adore this game... still got my first edition fully painted... so much fun to play it. 😍 Very cool Video, totally capture the fascination this game is infesting it's players 😉
Completely agree! This is also my forever game! I ended up selling my 2014 edition though and buying the original one again, plus Deathwing, it’s the best version!
@ a few reasons, 1) I wasn’t keen on the dynamic models in the new versions and they can be quite hard to fit on the squares when crowded, plus a game that is so Inportant for a figures ‘facing’, I found it odd that the figures didn’t all immediately obvious which way they face? 2) I love the feel of the old metal terminators, and even the old plastic genestealers I preferred. 3) Regarding gameplay, the old version has more to it, small rules like the flamer marine being able to self destruct, along with the Deathwing expansion content that brought a mission generator, and points to build your squad. Also there was more terrain types along with ‘junk’ to block view etc and disposal shutes to chuck genestealers down! 4) Nostalgia! 😂 I should qualify that my preference for the first edition requires combining it with the Deathwing expansion 👍
What a game. And this edition is just the ultimate chef’s kiss. The map tiles are just sex. Love the game. Love the video. I need to go play it again now.
Love the video game version SPACE HULK ASCENSION which really captures that creepy overwhelming malevolence of a space hulk and the inhuman alien character of the Tyranids. Its no longer available on STEAM but i heard its available in certain "other places". Might also be available on GOG (Good Old Games). Happy holidays and thanks for the great video ☕
I got into 40k a few years ago. Such a great setting. The books are awesome too, I especially like the Horus Heresy series. 40k has replaced Star Wars for me as my favorite science fantasy universe.
FYI: Terminators and Genestealers debuted in the 40K universe first in Space Hulk. One of my all time favourite games. It's highly expandable with a good mix between complexity and challenge. The timer adds another layer of difficulty.
Man, back when I got started in the hobby saw this sucker, and was amazed, but not for the $120 it was going for secondhand since it was out of print. Kicking myself for not grabbing it at THAT price.
Still need to play this… found a flawless copy that even had a foam mini holder in it. I think I’m going to do a full 3D experience with it of course 🤣
I am still sad that to this day I didn't pick it up when it came out, or that I'm unwilling to purchase it now at 300.00 lol. Maybe a 3d print of the levels, and buy the 10 termies and genestealers?
Do a hobby project. Build the board tiles and print models. Then paint the models -- it is worth it. At first play it may not charm you, but it will grow on you ;) If you like to go nuts with it, you can craft/print custom 3d terrain with rooms and corridors :P
What a masterpiece of a game. Same as you, I mostly play solo now a days. And I found Space Hulk´s videogame is amazing. Not the shooter one called Deathwing, no, the turn base copy of the boardgame. Its like the Blood Bowl videogame, just a digital version of the game with an IA. Is great!! (its in Steam)
@@TheDungeonDive there's been multiple versions on Steam, three last time I checked but only one currently available. Pretty sure I've got a spare steam key for "Space Hulk Accension" which was the 2nd version I think. It's delisted but the key should still work. Let me know if you want it.

Agree Space Hulk is a timeless classic. There are official solo rules and missions for the 1st edition (Deathwing), which should work for 3rd or 4th edition.
Yeah - I've played some official and unofficial solo rules, but it's just not a very good solo game IMO. This game really needs that trash talking and competitive nature to be what it is. For me, it just doesn't offer enough substance for solo, which is why I prefer Here's Negan. Here's Negan has all the action and tension of SH, but it also adds some amazing rules for solo/co-op play. The chaotic nature of Negan, the random events, and searching for loot makes that game for me.
This is one of my all-time top 10 games. It is the reason I insist on a game having miniatures and maps to be considered a true dungeon crawl game. Also, the (1st ed.) rules for line-of-sight calculations are the GOAT. I will substitute these rules into any game that has LOS that uses a gridded map. Unfortunately, I too, have a difficult time finding a second player.
@@TheDungeonDive You count the spaces. You do not have to go corner to corner, or try to determine where the center of the space is. You don't need a straight edge or laser. You just count. It kinda hard to explain without diagrams, but basically if you're x spaces away from the obstructing corner, anything within x spaces on the other side is hidden. I seen other games use the same LOS rules, but SH rules are the easiest to understand.
