    I think what puts so many people off from signing up is hearing "Bone marrow transplant", it just sounds scary. When I first heard of it, I thought it involved drilling into your femur or something.
    It's great that you put this video out, it can show people that it's really not a scary process. Thanks for the video man!

      Well there actually are 2 methods: and sometimes it may be required to give directly from the bone: they suck your bone marrow out of your hip bone with general anesthesia in a 24 h surgical procedure. and it's about 1 L of bone marrow

    You are an inspiration man. At the current moment, 68,000 people have seen this video. Even if 1% of them register, that could still save someone's life if they match. Great idea making the video, it made it way less scary then it seemed and perhaps even I will go register. Still need to do more research but good on you dude. Hope you're doing well.

    Every healthy person should register their marrow. They have no idea how much they could be helping someone. I wish I were healthy enough to do this or to give blood and platelets. They are so precious and always so needed.

    We need more people like you, the feeling of helping others is wonderful. It will be 10 years in April since I was called upon to donate. It was a surreal experience.
    since I have been tested twice but both time the patient has gone into remission. I used to have a fear of needles but the experience helped me overcome that and will achieve 4 gallons of blood donated by the end of the year barring any deferrals due to blood pressure or pulse. I hope you get the opportunity to donate again.

    Thank you so much for sharing this. You hear so many horror stories about how painful donating bone marrow can be. It's so great to see the full up to date process and how it's done. You really helped take that fear factor that was stopping me from registering away.

    The guys who are saying she hit him too hard with the syringe- actually the nurses who do the fastest shots are usually the most experienced ones. 90% of the time, the faster the shot goes in, whether it's intramuscular (like this, needle goes deep into the arm) or just under the skin, provided you know what you're doing, the less it hurts. Usually the more it looks like you're throwing a dart (strong, confident wrist motion) the better hte nurse is at shots. I get a lot more shots than the average person for medical condition and that's my experience. .

    SO AWESOME! Thank you so much for donating and for making and sharing this video. I lost my brother to leukemia in 2004 when a matching donor could not be found in any of the world's bone marrow registries. It's SO WONDERFUL that there are caring people in the world like YOU! I was tested, and my tissue type was not a match, so I couldn't donate for my brother. But I immediately joined the registry after receiving my test results, so I have been in the registry since 2004. I haven't been a match for anyone yet, but I am ready if I am ever called. You are a REAL LIFE SUPERHERO in my book! Thank you so much for what you've done not only for the patient receiving your donation, but to help educate the public with your video. YOU ARE A ROCK STAR!!!

    I am 50, mother of two. I signed up a couple of years ago. They contacted me a few months ago and here I am I received my forth shot today. I have had a bad disk and back problems before and those shots made me having pains on my lover back and knees and feel a little fever today. I am a little anxious about tomorrow's long hour of collection.
    It has not been easy specially if you have young teenagers and no help, but I hope I can help that person who need the stem cells.
    The strange thing was a lot of doctors and nurses I spoke with had no knowledge about the process and actually made me wondering if I have made a right decision.
    But hopefully everything goes fine tomorrow and I will be done.

    Thank you for sharing your story. I had a family member get diagnosed with acute leukemia this year and she required an immediate bone marrow transplant. She was only expected to live another week or two but thanks to the donor, she's been able to prolong her life for another 7 months (and counting) and be with her four young kids. I've wanted to sign up to be a donor but was clueless on the process of donating apart from signing up on Be The Match. I just happened to stumble on your video and you calmed my nerves about the procedure.
    I'm also a 2014 grad from the University of Notre Dame, so I loved the shirts! Go Irish!

      +Michelle Brown Thoughts and prayers with your loved one. The procedure wasn't very difficult or painful for me at all: not too much different from your average blood donation. I highly recommend getting anyone you know to get their cheek swabbed so we can have more people on record and more matches.
      What dorm were you in at ND? I was in Keough, class of 2012 hence the name IrishRoo12.

    Today is the day I'm going to see if I'm a donator match for my older brother who lives in Arizona. Tommy was diagnosed with Acute Myloid Leukimia about a year ago. Tom underwent chemotherapy for about a month which brought his white blood cell count down to 0 and ridding all his cancerous cells. Well that was a year ago. Just found out his cancer came back and now me being a blood brother I need to go to the hospital here in South Florida to find out if I'm a bone marrow match. I'm told there is a 25 % chance of me being a match. That does not seem like good enough odds for me. I wish it were more like 75%! If I am a match I was under the impression from the video I would not have to fly out to Arizona as your sending the recipient of your marrow to the one in need of the transplant. When I spoke to the nurse in Arizona she informed me if I was a match I would need to come there directly for the transplant. I'm confused, why did you not have to be where the patient was and they are telling me if I'm a match I will need to be there?

  • @EmilyAnnPlizak

    I got my match email last week. I get my blood tested on Monday. If I'm clear I sit tight until I hear! Would love support and advice as I am very nervous & excited. hey it went great the nurse's said it was the fastest time the have ever seen. 2 hours and 15 min. which is why my body pretty much felt like it was going to explode along with my head because I had built up so much white cells in my body from the injections

      don't be nervous at all to sign up. it's a beautiful thing in life to be able to help someone else even if you don't know them. I was back to work two days after the donation. it was like the worst hangover of a headache is how I was trying to explain what the worst part of the process leading up to the donation day was like.

    As much as I would love to donate bone marrow or blood, I cannot get over my fears of sharp objects going inside me. If I were in your position, I would be sceaming, crying, and most likely pass out. I do want to donate but I am such a wimp.

      +Shananay Lopez I know its hard but you just have to think about whats going on on the other end of the donation process. There is a person who could be very sick that gets poked at all day with needles and they are fighting for their life. I thought the least i could is suffer for a week while going through the process.

      +IrishRoo12 I donated blood at my school and was shocked at how many people didn't care to donate. I absolutely hated the process and even passed out but its all worth it. Thanks for uploading this video. I just registered and my swab kit is on its way! Super nervous and excited. Praying I'm a match!

      +Mallory Ryann I donated blood at my school recently too, and I'll admit I was nervous when I went in, but it honestly wasn't really THAT bad in the end. Everybody was telling me that the worst part was when they prick your finger to test your iron level, I barely felt a damn thing at that part of the process, so I have no idea what they were talking about.
      It's worth mentioning though at my school, almost everybody was willing to donate, and a patient got my blood around the Christmas season.

    I’m signing up and get my swab in the mail soon. I’d love to save a life but I’m super anxious when it comes to pain. How bad is it? My friend says the pain is horrible, his dad did it. Also do they put you out during the donation? Or do you stay awake?

    Kind of looked similar to dialysis. I guess one line was blood out and one line was blood in and then the machine pulled out whatever it needed from your blood?

    Hello, thanks for posting this video. I'm hoping to sign up to do this when I'm a little bit older because I'm still a little too young to donate in my country. I was just wondering if the nurses mentioned not being able to donate if you have had a blood transplant yourself or if you have to wait a certain amount of time after major surgery. If you know the answer that would be very helpful as I can't find any websites that will completely answer those questions. Thank you and congratulations.

    So what you did here is similar to donating blood, but a lot longer? Because I've heard that donating bone marrow can be painful, but if this is one way to donate, I might do it myself one day. Because I've donated blood before, and if what you did here is almost similar to that, I just might do it.

    • @IrishRoo12
      @IrishRoo12  8 років тому

      It's a stem cell donation almost identical to giving blood except it took about 4 hours. I hope you are able to put your bone marrow on record. Follow the link in the description and you may be a match for someone. No obligation applies of course

      They pay for everything. And there are several hospitals that do this nationally; you wouldn't necessarily need to travel to San Diego.

    My husband is trying to figure out if he would be a match for his brother. He wants to know what type of physical test you had to go through before donating ? Any help is appreciated thank you!

    • @IrishRoo12
      @IrishRoo12  9 років тому

      There's 2 types of ways to donate: 1) through bone marrow in the hip 2) through stems cells in the blood. The type I did, as you can see in the video, is the latter. All I had to do to prepare was receive a series of shots that increased marrow in the plasma. I'm not sure what kind of prep is involved in the 1st way or if it's the same.

    I thought since bone marrow site I looked up googled before finding your page says that anthesthea would be used so I thought they aspirated it from bone. I can't be bone marrow donor due to health issues. But if I knew it was not going into the bone I can share that info maybe get other to donate. I been sick since age 4with autoimmune diseases why can't donate. Would not want someone with cancer to devolpe other health issues...plus I am on immune depressant of low dosage chemo therapy myself since have jra and on biological med called humria that depressant my immune system
