Detractors abound but we are blessed to have a compassionate former President, a man blessed with considerable intelligence, depth of experience, position, and extraordinary communicative skills, address these fundamental problems. On the issue of gun violence, please note that Mr. Obama is not suggesting that we disarm law-abiding United States citizens. However, like any sensible person, he does advocate requirements for gun purchases and ownership; just as there are requirements for obtaining a driver's license, a commercial driver's license, etc. There are simple, practical ways of addressing gun violence that don't infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens to own firearms. Thankfully, former President Obama understands that the prevalence of gun violence is propagated by, intertwined with and rooted deeply in other societal ills, like mental health issues, political and cultural division, the breakdown of the family, lack of economic opportunity, absence of community support/role models, etc. Thanks, Nate and CBS for your continued focus on solutions and positive results.

    • @jer1014t2th
      @jer1014t2th Рік тому +9

      Tell you what:
If you can prove to me how any of the gun laws that get pushed after a shooting could have prevented that shooting, I'll agree to call it sensible gun reform.
Given that they rarely if ever would, I'll continue calling them unconstitutional aka unlawful infringements on the citizenry's constitutional rights.
Education, education, education - but not government-mandated or controlled. We don't have a constitutional right to own and use a car.
We do need responsible gun ownership, but that needs to come from a motivated and self-regulated community; and as with any criminal, those who violate laws regarding harm of others - whether they use a gun or a hammer or what-have-you - should be held to account as the law proscribes. We do need to work on how we deal with mental health issues as a society, but the unfortunate fact is that you can't legally take someone's guns unless or until they have shown themselves to be dangerous.
The issue with government licensing is that it's too damned close to a registry. If government gets a gun registry, it just takes one political movement to move to confiscation, which will be hard to undo once done. So, no.
Gun rights are not a proxy for other issues, like Obama claims they are.
It is, with 1st amendment freedom of speech coming in a close second, THE most important right and issue in terms of what kind of nation and society we want to hand down to our kids.
      Bar none.
The 2nd protects the 1st, and the 1st protects the rest.

I recently watched a talk by Michelle Alexander from 2013. She connects the dots between the fact that young Black people have been dying at extremely high rates in poor communities for decades, and it was not a topic. Having said that, the solutions to end high gun violence in all communities must lead to living wages and quality healthcare. Alexander points out the relationship between unemployed men and gun violence. Let's make sure the topic doesn't end with addressing gun violence for white people. It's also tragic how 3 recent mass shootings were committed again mexican American an African American communities, some specifically white supremacists motivated.

We all have to take responsibility as fathers, mothers, teachers, politicians, police officers, etc. We all play a part in this country. When we have so many little kids getting kids because of gun violence that really hurt the soul. We has a country can do better with communication, respect, and understand.

Toleration of gun violence and fractured / divided conversation (without seeking and finding what commonalities we can focus on to have functional conversation that helps all regardless of side or affiliation) is something we can choose Or choose to shift. Becoming Aware that we have a Choice is Key. It's important. It's possible.

Gun rights are not a proxy for other issues.
It is, with 1st amendment freedom of speech coming in a close second, THE most important right and issue in terms of what kind of nation and society we want to hand down to our kids.
      Bar none.
The 2nd protects the 1st, and the 1st protects the rest.

Any politician who tells you, “The government should be trusted to regulate your right to own weapons of any kind.” will eventually tell you, “The government should be trusted to regulate your right to vote/move freely/raise your children/a trial by jury of peers/peaceful assembly/procreation/home ownership/press/worship….etc”
The conversation has been had, many times, when people like Obama won, millions suffered and died. NO more conversation is necessary.
Clean up the character of our woke, YOLO, hedonistic society and the mass shootings will go back to where they were before the 80s…nearly 0 occurrences a blue-moon.
