It was said Hope Emerson was one of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. When she wasn't working she took care of her elderly mother and her little dog and she loved gardening.
This is a classic, a satisfying movie on many levels. Tremendous artistry in the cinematography, the script and performances, including Eleanor Parker who is so great. And the memorable character Evelyn Harper, brilliantly played by Hope Emerson. Highly recommended!
I love the part where the actress who played Mrs odets on my little Margie says I'll put your lights out for good harper I use that line several times in my life comes in handy too
This IS my favorite movie about women in prison. Hope Emerson was robbed of an Oscar but considering how people frowned on homosexuality in those days I am not surprised she (had) to lose. There is NOTHING feminine about ANY of the women in this movie (except the visit by the mother to the daughter). RIP Hope Emerson. You too Kitty Stark. I loved you too Kitty. Good lord! Hat's off to the casting director, who should have received an Oscar nod, if such a category existed.
Betty Garde as Kitty Stark kills Evelyn Harper in the end. Betty was also a big woman at 5-10" and played toughies including Thelma the giant maid in a Honeymooners episode. She was a friend of mine in her later life! Great Lady!
WELL I sooo hated the character, but of course when you think about it, Hope Emerson did such a convincing job in the role, no one could have played her better. The best part, hate to say it, is when the character gets stabbed to death with a fork, and Marie says intensely, "KILL her, Kill her, kill her...kindly omit flowers"...the viewer is so relieved that this fat sadistic cow finally got her due...was I the only one to feel that way?
I knew Betty Garde (Kitty Stark) personally in her later life. We visited many times. She said she was good friends with Hope Emerson! She said that she and Hope would joke with the girls between takes and Hope would play the piano and sing ditties. The director (John Cromwell) told them to stop because he didn't want any levity seeping into the somber movie. How interesting!
Evelyn Harper RULED! Kitty Stark too! Oh, poor June -- flopped back and now gone stirbugs! Oh, and I could listen to Smoochie crack wise all day! Seriously, CAGED was just the best. I agree that the DIVINE Hope Emerson was robbed of a much deserved Best Supporting Actress Oscar! Whenever I have a visitor I always say, suggestively, "Sit in this chair; it's kinda roomy!" Definitely a five star film!
@@waynej2608: I don't care about Parker. Yes she was very good. Hope's role was supreme. She made the movie. Again she should have won best actress hands down not Parker. The other actress who was great and only had very few lines was Gertrude Hoffman from My Little Margie. Hope of course also appeared on Peter Gunn in a diametrically opposite role. A supreme movie one of my 50 favorites! It'll be on tonight Pacific Time on MoviesTV non-cable channel and guess who'll be watching?
Boy, is she evil! I can't wait to see Caged once I do 1950! Do you think Evelyn was lying about the date just to goad them or was she telling the truth?

One of the great movies because of the fabulous Hope Emerson the real star of this movie!
Hope Emerson the woman(man) you love to hate!

Agree. You cannot stop watching.
This is an incredible scene. Wish she had been in more movies and with bigger roles. Cry of the City is another classic she is in.
I love Hope Emerson. The scene in Adam's Rib when she picks up Spencer Tracy is priceless.
Jan Sterling ("Smoochie") is worth watching in every picture she made.
Gotta love Hope Emerson, a wonderful character actress!
You said it! Probably no one of this younger generation knows her or the other great character actors or actresses!
I love the part where the actress who played Mrs odets on my little Margie says I'll put your lights out for good harper I use that line several times in my life comes in handy too
This is one of the best movie ever
RIP Eleanor Parker.

GREAT Movie! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I think that's Grandma Walton at :41.
Ellen Corby is in this. More than one time throughout.

What a great actress. Lost her too soon!

She should have won as best actress!!!
@@roberttelarket4934 Eleanor should've won, Hope best supporting, but I digress, they were both brilliant.

Maggie Kirkpatrick based the Freak on this character
Betty Garde as KITTY STARK - Tall, Gangly, Tough- Kills Evelyn Harper!
Must be a truck! Lols...
0:44 - a less attractive Drew Barrymore (9/29/18)

Any woman can get a date, some guys have a thing for the amazon type anyway.
I think the “Man” she had taking her out was actually a Butch Woman.
