Eleanor Parker is without question one of America's most underrated film actresses. The fact that she was regally beautiful didn't stop three Oscar nominations for Best Actress, including this film. She's 90 now.
What a film. Where do I begin? Eleanor Parker is at her innocent best in the beginning! But slowly, the way she perfectly unfolds and reveals her tragic, internal hardening is brilliant. I'll never forget when I saw this for the first time, I was staying home from school and in my mom's bed on a rainy day feeling miserable and depressed. This movie really made an impression on me all those years ago.
@@justineandserena She found a kitten and the Matron and her character had fought each other and during all the fracas, the kitten was killed and the Warden had given her a 3 day sentence in the hole and the Matron decided that the 3 day sentence wasn't sufficient, so she and her accomplice took an electric razor and shaved the prisoner's head before throwing her in the hole. I highly recommend that you see this classic movie!
James Fox who was the matron that she she was fighting ? Why were they fighting over a kitten? Who was the matron I know the warden was the tall lady.. . Sounds brutal
@@justineandserena Because no pets were allowed in the prison. The Matron was played by Hope Emerson and the Warden was played by Agnes Moorehead. You'll also see Cameo appearances by Ellen Corby, Betty Garde, Jan Sterling, Olive Deering and Jane Darwell.
Eleonor Parker was so beautiful, especially in her later years, I really didn't like seeing her get shaved bald, but I would have hated it even more if her head was shaved in a movie in her later years. She was so beautiful and had such beautiful hair in some of the other movies I saw her in.
Eleanor Parker had it all over Vivian Leigh as the nominee for best actress in 1951. Eleanor's performance as Kurt Douglas' wife Mary McCloud in "DETECTIVE STORY" was one of the finest female roles of that decade (and if you care to notice, the role was extremely difficult to pull off.) But Parker's incomparable portrayal of the unjustly treated wife was as close to perfection as could be. However, Vivian Leigh won the Oscar that year for "Streetcar Named Desire". But, truly, you really shouldn't miss "DETECTIVE STORY". You'll love it... Guaranteed!! (It also gives us another good look at the wonderful acting of William Bendix as Lou).
"Streetcar named desire" was adapted from a play (Tennessee Williams I think). Detective Story is like a play ONLY in the fact that it is mainly acting in one squad room (like Barney Miller was). It's a really good movie. Speaking of acting in one room you MUST see the old "12 Angry Men" starring Henry Fonda. It is NOTHING like that slop that came out some years back. This movie has 12 of the finest actors of the period; you get so involved that when the movie is over you're like, "OMG...they did all that in ONE room". REALLY, it was INCREDIBLE. May even be my all time favorite movie (alongside "The Lost Weekend") with Victor Mature and Jane Wyman!! See these and ENJOY!!
Scout Finch ; I have seen them all, except this woman's prison movie. Yeah!, "Detective Story" was great, I had forgot the name of it, that's why I asked. Although not like a play, that squad room always reminds me of the beginning and end of "D.O.A". featuring Edmond O'Brien...................Another great move that's not like a play, but kind of like a play is "The Gallant Hours" with James Cagney as FLT ADM William F. Halsey. The words and music to the excellent chorale theme was written by one of the co-stars.
Seen them all...I'm an old movie fanatic lol They could ACT! Even the secondary players were terrific (Jack Elam, Walter Brennan, Arthur Kennedy -(love him)). THX for the talk.
Eleanor Parker was brilliant and so underrated. I think her biography was called Woman of a Thousand Faces and she really was. Every performance she gave was different. I love her as The Baroness in Sound of Music but sadly thats all shes remembered for.
@JohnnyGNV Yes, I agree she should have won--searing performance. And she played the Baroness in Sound of M. 15 years later!!!--totally different performance (of course)--showed what a versatile actress she was--and yet always that fragile--yet strong quality--a bit like Joan Fontaine, but all her own. All hail Eleanor. Yes, she deserves that honorary Oscar.
Caged was the film that inspired Divine's Women Behind Bars, with Divine playing the meany, played in this film by Hope Emerson, one of the greatest of the female villains in film at that time.

Too much competition- Bette Davis in "All About Eve" (also Anne Baxter, who was nominated for the same film), Gloria Swanson in "Sunset Boulevard", and Judy Holiday in "Born Yesterday" (who won).
Steve I don’t see how Judy Holliday won. No one even talks about that movie or performance. Bette Davis’ and Gloria Swanson’s were among the best of all time.

I ___. and we took her home" ??? What about that??? Funny? Should we use that ending?
@ColumbiaPerna I tend to agree with you ~ I would think even back then they had enough make-up Technique to make it appear that her hair was being shaved and then to wear a cap with make-up. I'm SURE she was and is a dedicated actress, but I really don't think they actually had to "shave" her head! Later on in the film, her peach fuzzy hair begins to grow in as time moves along, so obviously they had to resort to various length wigs and makeup to accomodate her various hair lengths in scenes!
Interesting comment! I met her son Paul many years ago and asked him this very question and he said that Perc Westmore, the famous WB Makeup artist created a special wig that would be able to be shaved and look real!
It's possible that deep down Hope Emerson was as sick of being a circus-freak as Verne Troyer and they both shortened their lives by hitting the bottle.
Almost 2 million views? Wow. How? The film is not that popular (only 4k votes on imdb). Anyway, I was shocked by the shaving. Today, it's common for actresses to "ugly up" for (Oscar-bait) roles. But that didn't happen in the golden age of Hollywood.
I didn't understand why the hair was traumatic. I would have been much more traumatized by the kitten death. Did anyone see it move? Supposedly its mouth opens when she says it's dead. Saw this while in the hospital and had to watch "Too Cute" on Animal Planet the rest of the day. Decent, though obvious, message. BTW, I used to teach summer school, and the same thing happens there, making first offenders repeaters. Don't send your kids there as punishment. Really, don't.
