- ‘Mid90s’: Jonah Hill and Cast on Shooting in 4:3, the Casting Process, and More
After talking about wanting to direct a movie for over a decade, and getting to work with a diverse group of filmmakers that includes Judd Apatow, Martin Scorsese, Nicholas Stoller, Ricky Gervais, Bennett Miller, Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen, Joel and Ethan Coen, and Gus Van Sant, I figured Jonah Hill’s directorial debut, Mid90s, was going to be something cool and unexpected.
I was right.
As you’ve seen in the trailers, the film follows a 13-year-old (Sunny Suljic) over the course of a Los Angeles summer as he makes friends with a group of neighborhood skaters in, you guessed it, the middle of the 1990s. Cast with real skateboarders and non-professional actors, Hill’s film takes all the gloss off the time period and throws you into the room almost like a bystander on the wall. The characters smoke, drink, and act like real teenagers without any sense of inauthenticity. In addition, Hill shot the film on 16mm using a 4:3 aspect ratio, so you almost feel like you’re watching a video that was shot by the very people you see on screen. It’s a great debut feature and I can’t wait to see what Hill does next.
A few hours before seeing the film, Jonah Hill and some of his cast (Sunny Suljic, Olan Prenatt and Na-kel Smith) came into the Collider studio at TIFF. During the interview they talked about why Jonah choose Mid90s as his directorial debut, the aspect ratio and convincing A24 to make it that way, if he felt any studio resistance to casting non-professional actors, what it was like for the cast to work with Jonah as a director, how Mid90s was born out of an idea for a different film that had flashbacks to the main character when he was 12, and a lot more.

Mid90s made me emotional and shit but soon as the movie ended I was tearing up because I just wanted more. Great ending to a great movie
It was a horrible ending wtf?. Great movie, bad way to end it. We don't even know what happens to them or where they go next, it just cuts black after that little film in the hospital.
The ending left me shook and wanting more, I didn’t like how it ended but that was obviously the best way to do it
Trevor Michaud i think it’s just about the experience and not necessarily about how it ends it’s about what they learn and go thru
@@trevormichaud8701 A horrible ending? Wtf? The boys will most likely go back to skate, Stevie and his brother will get along well and that's pretty much it. The future of Ray and Fuckshit's friendship is a mystery as well as Fourth Grade's goals to become a filmmaker.
The ending pays off everything, including the bond that Stevie shares with the other characters. So, it doesn't need to be further extended.
Trevor Michaud yea it was a weird ass cut
Jonah seems he's reached a new level. A creative, innocent high of emotion, humility, and love. Inspiring.
This is not his final form
Agreed - his humility is astounding and inspiring to see - just that barely audible of a lil thank you to Sunny... @12:40 you know he honestly appreciates his actors
He's never stepped foot on a skateboard. He has no business raping a subculture that has been pillaged more than enough.
Scutter Boy youve not seen the movie. He done a great job.
@@scutterboy655 ummm actually he was a skater do some research
I feel like Jonah is going to be one of the greats of our generation.
Absolutely, this movie is beautiful
I really hope Hollywood doesn’t ruin Sunny Suljic, he’s such an amazing kid and he seems so down to earth. Some child actors grow up to be so full of themselves, but Sunny already seems so intelligent and talented. He’ll go far one day, but I’ll always know him as Atreus😊
He's a skateboarder, he'll always be down to earth
yeah kinda like millie bobby brown I feel like she’s been ruined
Omg I did not notice that he was the voice actor for Atreus from god of war !
Hollywood doesn't do it to them. It's either by their own doing or their parents fuck them up
@@phoenixfunny4517 tell that to cory and cory you big ass
1:17 lmao that long ass smile I started laughing aha
xyungx same 🤣
Ksksksksksks y love you
These guys are the same people who they portray as their characters in the movie. It just makes it so genuine. I used to skate a lot in the early 2000s, but I swear I knew people just like these guys and you have to smile when you see them. Good times, Good vibes, and Good memories.
New found respect for jonah dude has some monster talent almost made me cry off a damn trailer lol

Mid 90s was really a great piece of art and history and sunny suljic seems like an iconic ass name
9:00 when you can't remember if you locked the door before leaving home
hahahahahaha
So pleased with Jonah’s understanding and explanation of the skateboarding community. There’s no other community/culture like it. Thank you Jonah. Can’t wait to see this.
I feel him. He really knows what hes talkin about . mid 90s i was 17 18. I remember thinkin to myself how happy i was to grow up after the 80s how hardcore our gen was is and always will be a memorable decade forsk8ing music video games technology in gen the net was starting up. Some of my last childhood xmas times when i was still a kid and could ask for Janco jeans hoody and a deck. 90s were still pretty safe as far as bein out late and young we'd sk8 till 4am and get up at noon to do it again.
1:16 The two kids on the left lol
I saw this film this afternoon and really struggled to hold back from crying. The sound track (especially 'Morrisey') was beautifully chosen to highlight the period of the mid 90's for young kids from dysfunctional families trying to find and gain acceptance in the world. I had no idea most of them were not actors. They were brilliant and their characters were flawless.
They had no formal training, but they had the requisite skills. They knew how to observe. They were willing to learn.
The dude on the far left looks like he’s high the whole time😂
he prolly is
remember that kids don't find adult conversation as engaging.. he is likely just zoning out.
@@rosieposie839 he’s like 19 in this
Smh I just wanted to hear Olan speak and he only spoke once or twice wtf😭😭
omg me too
You can tell Nak is so happy and excited about the movie i love it
Reuben getting left out in real life
And 4th grade

Nakel's verse on Earl's album is still incredible
SkizzyKirk the story behind his verse is even more incredible
Julian Flores absolutely

I only just watched this for the first time last night because one of my IB Film students is using it in their comparative analysis. I grew up in Southern California, but in the 80s, but as both a film teacher and a drama teacher, I was blown away by how natural the dialogue sounded. Sounded completely organic and completely natural and the way people talked when I was growing up. I’ve always liked Jonah Hill as an actor, but now I have newfound respect for him as a filmmaker. I really liked this movie, and the performances he got out of his actors is top-notch.
Olan seems so sad smiled like twice lmao
Huge fan of Jonah, can't wait to see his directorial debut. Super interesting hearing him talking about the technicalities of shooting in 4:3. Absolutely loved his explanation of the film as a reverse skate video, really excited to see this.
Huge Jonah hill fan here too.
My guy Nakel!! Gonna have to go and show support to Jonah and Nak
Such a good movie!
Always loved jonah hill but he's obviously elevated to another level and that is beautiful.
Perfect debut Jonnah, this movie immediately became one of my favorites. I already watched it nearly five times. also recommend to show it your teen children
This interview makes me geeks. Mid 90s captured my childhood
Just saw the movie last night... Absolutely loved it. Perfect representation of what it was like to be a skateboarder in that era.
Can't wait to see more Jonah! So talented
Just saw mid90’s- Jonah you did a fantastic job of portraying a major culture that’s usually misrepresented in media. It was totally sick & the cast is super dope.
The boi Olan made it! I knew his prettyass was gonna be the only Deli dude to make it. I really miss them Deli days #RIPKRAB 🙏🏽
Who?
I miss Deli Status too. Jim Briggs died too :(
This movie was real dope 👌🏾 definitely brought back memories from when I was growing up in the 90s. Jonah had a solid cast 👏 I hope to see them in more movies 💯
Good interviewer. Good interviewees.
The Mid 90s brought me back
Amazing movie, everyone... hats off to all involved. Amazing story and acting.🙌🏼❤️🙏🏼
I love this movie. The fact that it’s not wide screen and is so similar to movies made at that time brings em back to being a kid in the 90s
So Happy for Jonah and these guys! I cannot wait, 3 more days!

The mid 90’s was straight heat 👏👏👏
This movie felt so real, I haven’t even gone through something like it but it almost feels to real. Jonah Hill did such a great job of characters! Love this movie🔥
Groundbreaking movie! I grew up skating. Still am involved in the culture. Still skate sometimes, do the tricks I know but, without all the friends I came up skating with. Skating is a lil more sad knowing that. But, we make new friends❤️ bless🙏
Very cool cast and Jonah is an amazing person! I must see this movie!
i found the story about why he used 4:3 instead of digitally ageing it really nice
I'm excited to see this Vision come to life. It sounds like Jonah has been busy on a passion project and I don't blame him for taking a little time to do something right.
I watched this movie like 3 times but never got bored of it
It takes an amazing director to bring actors from nothing to what we can see in this movie- Jonah should be very proud
CAINT WAIT TO SEE THIS MOVIE
11/10 recommendation
I assumed this entire movie was just improve. Mid 90s is one of the most well acted films I’ve ever seen bro. Crazy.
I cried for 90 min straight. Damn, I love you, Jonah Hill...
Jonah hill did a great job, the movie is much better than i was expecting for a first time director, hope to see more original movies from him in the future.
I was never a true skater but my uncles were teenagers when I was a kid and I saw them skate and always loved the sport, as a fan. This movie showed me better how my uncles lived their teenage years and I loved it.
Going TV and VCR shopping at Goodwill this weekend.
Jonah "I grew up skateboarding" Hill
Rob right lol he that fat kid who’s parents bought him all the skate gear so he thinks he was part of the scene. Guarantee there is not one photo or video of him doing anything other than standing on a board.
Jesse Dutton well either way if he doesn’t actually skates, he still knows his stuff on skating and that’s why he managed to pull off this movie
Saw this movie yesterday and just saw it again today
Great movie, reminded me of what it was like growing up.
Bruh Jonah did what I always wanted to do, make an old school movie with a camera that fits the time period, not just a filter
LMAO @ Jonah Hill putting that guy on blast 😆😆
Jonah seriously did a perfect job on selecting these guys🙌🏼💯 They we’re sick AF and did such a stellar job 💯 F’ing awesome 👌🏻 Olan Prenatt🔥💯🙌🏼🙌🏼😉
Bruh Nak is such a bright kid. Dude can do anything
He added a new level of directing one he by what has been said makes a kick ass movie and he didnt really care about the whole hd thing and shot the movie in 4:3 witch is awesome.
This movie was emotional and funny as hell. Most American Films give you more of a closed ending without any wondering but in a lot of foreign films they have ambiguous and open endings. These guys were amazing in doing their job
Love it!
I got a mid90s trailer before watching this😂😂

This sounds like it may be great!
They made a classic film in 2018 and we're choking on so much content we can't even see it
Bro I'm hyped
Kratos would be proud of boy in this movie
I want part two
Movie lacks real development and has some weird plot pacing, but god it has to be one of my favorite movies. Thanks acting, music and entertainment value are just through the roof. Worth a watch 100%
Kevin Mccollum nice little review on the film, I thought the same thing though wish we could see more happening with the Brother and the kids as well
Forsure! I felt like the movie could have went on another hour just to go deeper into each character. The movie flew by as is, and I would watch it again without even having a second thought.
Kevin Mccollum I literal have the same opinion
It felt rushed. Especially towards the end.
Yeah, I feel like another hour would have been good. I really wanted the mc to make up with his dysfunctional family as well as delve deeper into the other characters. Still a classic movie that I'm gonna cherish for the rest of my life.
I NEED TO WATCH THIS MOVIE
This movie is like the male version of the movie Thirteen, loved them both.
Great movie and I did not know about the filming ratio till after watching it.
This movie is goin to be Johnnas legacy.
Johna hill is a god Superbad is one of my favorite movies and I love him in every movie since that and mid 90s look great and is probably gonna win a Oscar
what jonah says from 16:10 to 16:27. That's exactly what you got from the movie. Great
That brother will definitely someday portray mike Tyson ... if a movie ever is made. I think it should :)
He’s not an actor though he’s a skateboarder
Francis Karma that would be sick
Francis Karma I agree man! Would be great, this is just the start of his acting career!
Keith Vane I didn’t know that. He’s still considered athletic right ? :)
skepta’s plug 3000 I know bro. He’s even got the silent, you know kind sort of afraid of the dark childish voice
Olan Prenatt needs to be in a zack de la rocha biopic
Can anybody tell me what game he is playing in the beginning of the movie
Jonah kinda looks like Steve jobs

If Steve jobs was a good person and fat
Jonah definitely took some acid and had an epiphany
He is Steve Jobs
This film was my child hood except Baltimore MD and early 2000 Johna touched the young life
(Love all the actors in the movie and I thought the acting was great) BUT, its crazy hearing them talk about acting. you can tell they're new to it and still grappling with the basics, yet they did such a good job and the movie turned out awesome. Must mean the director did an extra good job :)
Why did he mention “and that’s why you got free drinks” like soo and?
I thought the exact same thing....
Aliyah Adams it’s a sponsor he will have to plug them.
For humor
One scene was filmed at my school
I'm forever gonna wonder what nakel was laughing at at the beginning

I luv jonah hill. Been his #1 fan

Cried alot so inportant and nice movie

he has a girlfriend and is getting married why ruin it you have issues
He has a girlfriend 🥺
I like that they clowned on him for mentioning the sponser and the fact that’s why they got free drinks and stuff lmao like what’d you expect from sum chill ass kids ???
Does anyone know which super16 camera he used specifically? Thank you in advance.
Arri 416 I believe.
Def love this movie
Me and my girl love this dude, if you didn't watch maniac the 1st 2 episodes are a little tough narrative wise to grasp everything with the scifi ( and I've seen my fair share) but the rest of the series is a truly beautiful original story of current life and real problems people go through, dont live life with regrets, don't be afraid to fail cause you will always regret not taking that shot, and regret is far worse than failure. Hope this gets released soon to the masses. Been a fan of his a long time met him twice very cool laid back dude, sat at a bar in NY and had two beers and some food with him. Happy he's getting to do what he got into the business for.
definitely did not mean to leave that long of a comment. Great interview Frosty.
just watched the movie sooooo gooood
First off, I loved the movie, although the lady 2 seats over did not stop talking. I kept pulling my phone and facing it lit screen towards them...no luck. Hopefully, there isn't a terminal disease that causes one to speak non-stop like a tweaker. Now back to my question. Does anyone know the name of the super long street where they filmed them skating that long-ass shot of them skating down the middle of the 2-way traffic road? It looks like fun to cruise down that road. I'll be following them throughout the careers. Good luck to them all. It's quite hard to get the audience to care about the characters.
Sunburn!!!!
It’s amazing to see Jonah evolve into the man he is right now. Such an amazing actor, one of my all time favourites. I know his career as a director will follow the same path.
