Subtitles are available in the settings. I was in hospital last week, so this perhaps isn't the best. I do think the last few were a bit slap-dash as well. The content will probably improve as I'm still in the early stages of figuring out UA-cam, editing, etc. but this will take time as I can’t dedicate that much time to UA-cam at the moment. Apologies to all that come across these vids.
I always found the first outfit Kirsten Dunst wears so telling of what Marie Antoinette is about to experience; the light blue dress, blonde hair loose, and black ribbon is a copy of the classic Alice in Wonderland outfit, forshadowing to us that Marie is about to go down her very own rabbit hole.
I'm a guy and I must say this video is: Beautiful, show-stopping, totally unique, never been done before, astonishing, marvelous, wondrous. I watched this film and I've always liked it, because it feels like a dream. Like if Marie Antoinette had been reincarnated into this 21st century and she had written her story as a modern memoir, this would be the result. It made me feel really bad about her, because she was alone, with nobody that cared about Maria Antonia. They were fake friends and only cared about... la future Reine de France. She really felt throughout this film like a rose-coloured parrot, trapped in a gilded cage.
This is an excerpt from an Amazon reciew I made of this film. "What I liked about this film was how it subverted my expectations. I was expecting a period drama of a stuffy nature, with stuffy people wearing stuffy outfits and throwing stuffy balls with their stuffy protocols before the French revolution happens, but what I didn't expect, was a party hard type of story of Marie told in a "Day in the Life of College Freshman" kind of way, indeed the very first shot of the film gives you a taste of what is in store. The period drama ball stuffiness is still there but Marie Antoinette's tale truly reads like a super pampered College student, Dunst was especially fun to watch as a young Antoinette who is betrothed to French royalty, adjusts to life as a married princess, with all its... protocols, pressured by her mother to get knocked up and make an heir, but She also makes a few BFFs along the way, parties with them until drop, tries on shoes and outfits, eats a lot of macaroons, watches the Sunrise or Sunset, gets drunk with them at "frat parties", has sex with a very cute boy, the works. And in all honesty that is where the charm of this film came from surprisingly. It could have easily clashed with the film's period aesthetic but it really works in humanizing a Character that has long been made into a caricature of Pre Revolution nobility."
Seriously this was a recommendation and she absolutely blew it out of the park. Amazing film analysis especially how in depth you went with costuming. Please make more content like this. It was a great watch and l9ok forward to seeing morem Thanks for sharing!
You perfectly analyzed Sofia Coppola's directive and messages throughout the movie while giving us a deep dive into Marie's life. One of the best video essays ive seen
It's hard to imagine it was 16 years ago now. I fortunately got to see it on the big screen. Wow. As much as I enjoyed reading the history of the time, it was the costumes that drew me in. It most certainly didn't disappoint.... Side note. Their beheading was strongly influenced after catching them trying to escape out of France. The equivalent of a Captain leaving first from a sinking ship.
18:23 is no one gonna talk about her choker and bracelet too (the ribbons)? I feel like they also allude to being shackles which further shows that she's trapped in the palace of versailles.
There’s also a point in the opera house, when she’s wearing a black dress in mourning, that she’s wearing really big, sharp earrings; I feel like this can also be foreshadowing her being guillotined. 🗡️
2:22 “I think we also got a standing ovation”. The fact she can’t remember is quite telling, every film at Canne tends to get a standing ovation. It’s more about how long it is. Which these days is really, stupidly long.
The thing all you Sofia movie creators/critics don't understand is what it m eant to be THAT age in THAT time frame... whatever one it was, sofia knew how to capture. As an early 80 s babe i know what i see when i see it, and miss coppola got the best from her daddy - so much so that she will never be fully understood, like myself. i relate to her, and to her films, but especially to MA
The Nepo baby should have took the history of her own country to enforce the idea that hierarchisation humans based on their birth is a good thing. Of course if she painted a rich woman from a rich slave owner familly as a poor little girl with who life is unfair (while many people had a way worse life) it would have been more controversial...
I loved your video but isn’t it more likely that the fashion houses drew inspiration from the period itself, instead of from this movie? We’ve seen these silhouettes on the catwalks year after year, in numerous collections.
@@Edward2737-el6lx give it a shot! She made art with her films, there’s obviously things that aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but I’m sure you’ll find something to enjoy in her films! I feel like everyone can find something they enjoy in her filmography

Interesting.
Poor Marie!
Why call her Marie ? French speakers never do. Her first name is Marie-Antoinette.
Sofia coppola is a bad actress… why would I ttrust her films?
