I have the fretless version with Rotosound tapewound strings, Wilkinson tuners, Graphtech nut and real Hofner ebony bridge. I can get anything from double bass tones to modern J bass noises and lots in between. I bought it as a cheap double bass option but I get a lot of compliments on the sound and the look, it's so light, and on a suede strap the neck weight is beautifully balanced and feels good in your hand. It's now a favourite bass in my arsenal of 18 basses! Great review BTW! 😁
I had one but had terrible pickup imbalance. Bridge was load but significantly quieter. Gave up with it and sold it on. Was yours the same and if so did you tweak.
I've always liked these when I'm playing myself to sleep. But now!! Hofner bridges have nominal intonation adjustment, the witness point is a little piece of fret, each one has four tiny slots you can pull the fret bit and move it fore or aft. It could be worth it to buy a Hofner bridge if these pickups stand up to the tone-making test. Set up for a floating bridge is in part similar to a violin, you'd fit a newly shipped one by using the body as a sanding block, tape a piece of sandpaper over the spot it lives and sand the bottom of the bridge to fit the surface perfectly. Often those grub screws that the height wheels live on aren't bottomed out in their threaded holes, they should be hex heads like individual bridge saddle screws.

I love the sound of those....I had an italian made double cutaway violin bass that my son now has...I put flatwounds on it and it sounded so much like an upright bass through an amp....those hollow tones are like Epiphone Casinos...they just have that round, warm tone. great deal at that price.Wonderful for playing along with acoustic guitarists as well. I find that my suede guitar strap stops neck dive as it doesn't slip on my shoulder....those are great straps for that purpose.
Thank you Cici, I've just used your outro jam to do my other wise boring but necessary physio routine for my back, methinks this could be the sound track for future sessions 😎👏👍 Ps. £150 for all that, bonkers!!!
Cici - watching from 5:00 onwards when you are switching the tones - treble 'on' is actually giving you the neck pickup and bass 'on' is giving you the bridge pickup, my fretless version is exactly the same. Not an issue if you don't bother about the labels. I tend to keep both pickups on and use the volume pots to vary the balance between them. Still a bit crazy though!
I had a floating bridge on my banjo and my friend had a Ibanez George Benson model guitar, which was a hollow body with a floating bridge. The way we dealt with it was with faint pencil marks.
Cosmic Cruise.... wow... nice. Between Harly Benton and ASM bringing back Poly AT the sound of the World in the accelerating expansion of tonal space around us really is getting better all the time... thanks for the motivation.
Hi Cici! Loved this video - especially since I've been a HB beat bass owner for more than five years. Everything you say is spot-on! For an inexpensive instrument it is surprisingly well built and has a terrific sound. I would like to point out that the intonation can be improved, if necessary, by slightly changing the angle of the bridge which is not glued down. Also, the packaging slip of white material under the bridge should be removed since it's purpose is to prevent the bridge from moving out of position during shipping. As always, I very much enjoyed listening to you play during the second half of the video. Keep up the good work.😂😂
My Hofner copy came with a bit of thin foam under the bridge for shipping purposes. It should be removed for best contact between bridge and body. If you look closely at the bridge, there should be grooves where you can press in each saddle for intonation. Between those grooves in the bridge and moving the floating bridge, intonation can be zeroed in.😉👍 This bass looks good on you😎👍 I'm not surprised that your talents will get the best of what this instrument has to offer👍 😎👍❤🖖
Sounds good.... wonder what some thin felt would sound like to avoid marking up the flame top while deciding what strings to use. Did you have to sand and lap the base of the bridge to get it to match the surface curvature after finding it's intonation location?
@@JohnFHendry 😎👍 On mine...no. However...depending on the humidity in your area, after letting the instrument acclimate to its surroundings, it may need to be matched to the body for optimal contact and transference of strings energy to the body of the instrument. Personally wouldn't put anything between the bridge and body. If the bridge is well sanded an smooth, damage to the finish of the instrument would be negligible 😉👍❤🖖
