With that setup it doesnt matter if the tank is leveld or not as long as you dont have an outlet in the glas on the lower site. Thats why you dont see a constantly flow at the filter outlet. There is no gravity working on the water downwards when it still remains in a closed system.

Very neat to see a replica of a different type of aquatic environment than a conventional tank would showcase. Super interesting, and highly educational too! Would love to see you continue to explore this sort of concept, playing with scapes to replicate environments that I think a standard fishkeeper may either not think of, or feel they have the tools/knowledge to do!

I tried it at home. I used flat sandstone rocks and let the water cascade over it making pools after each pour over. My hillstream loaches and the two small plecos I put in it loved it. I created a bit of an undercut beneath one of the stones in one of the pools, and similar overhangs on each side for each of the pools. The fish in the pools would go under the overhangs part of the time, then would come out to the main current to feed. I had to have the sandstone cut to shape so that it would fit properly into the tank. I also planted the overhangs with mosses. I did not put any sand or soil in the tank. I did put some mosses in the flow of the water as it went over the sandstone. I placed three water intakes about a foot upstream in the bottom pool. By placing three in, and putting them upstream I was able to limit the suction on of the outlet intakes so that fish would not get sucked in. I did not use a power head. There was plenty of flow generated by the slightly angled sandstone.
The idea was inspired by a stream which I had seen in Colorado in the United States. It also has a sandstone bottom with little sand or other substrate, and it hosts lots of cutthroat trout fry and some skulpins. In my tank, the bottom pool had sand in it, but only in the bottom of it. As in the stream in Colorado, no plants were on the sandstone, and only a few mosses were growing on and next to the water. I had the water coming out from two pieces of sandstone placed one on top of the other at the top of the stream a bit like a spring. On the top piece of sandstone I put some moss. I put a little soil behind that, and put in a sliver of mountain bluestem grass. Except for the fact that when it goes to seed, the seeds are a bit messy, it perfects the look at the top of the aquarium. As it is in your tank, the hillstream loaches are always in the flow. From time to time, some of the other fish will fight their way up or downstream to get to one or another of the pools.
Though sandstone is in short supply in Great Britain, I'm sure you could find plenty of slates which could be cut to size and used to the same effect. I did not have nearly the amount of water in the aquarium as you did in yours. As a result, the pools went from small at the top to large at the bottom. Further, the water depth going over the stone was not deep. it was enough to cover the backs of the hillstream loaches, and that's about it. As the other fish ran the flow, their backs were out of the water. They ran it fast though, and if they ran out of juice before making it to the next pool, they just let the current was them back from whence they came. I witnessed trout fry doing this same thing in the little stream in Colorado which inspired me to make this aquarium.
If I live long enough and can amass enough money, I hope to build a much bigger and longer one with a heavy duty chiller on it to make a true Rocky Mountain style creek complete with cutthroat and brook trout, as well as the little skulpins which are the clean up crew of those real creeks and rivers. Dreams dreams dreams...

Fabulous build as always MD & Matt!
The tank is shallow enough that the silicone seams should be able to withstand the tilt in applied pressure. If that turns out to not be the case, you can get the "tilted" sloped substrate of a river with bags of dirt/soil supporting egg crate light diffuser, then cover with your substrate and boulders.

Super interesting tank, but with that water depth, I think you could get the same effect by building up one end inside a level tank. I'd think the angled tank would only be necessary if the upstream rocks are not submerged and the water is running down the substrate, not flowing through it. Picture a shallow stream vs a deep river. You'd also be able to increase your water volume substantially that way.

It's a fantastic build BUT my only worry is when you tilt the tank the complete water mass weight moves towards the lower side instead of the be base. If you really do the math, let's the water quality is 300L which would rest on base glas of 4ft by 2ft after tilting the tank the weight of 300L now moves to lower sided glass wall that is let's say 2ft by 2ft. Gravity does play its role, not the complete weight is shifted but this causes problem to the tank in long run, problems like wall silicone leak or even side glass break( I pray none of this happens to this tank) but I hope you got the point. Love you guys. Once again fantastic build!!

Looks fantastic , and I love seeing the new set-ups you try. Seeing the stream loaches moving through the flowing water over the rocks is awesome.
My only question is whether the angle of the tank will stress the seams at the deeper end and could potentially lead to a failure of the tank?
I was thinking you could have the base of the tank level, and have a long "wedge" underneath the substrate to introduce the slope you want. Maybe by using old under gavel filter plates stacked and cover with a fine mesh? This would also allow you to use closer to the full capacity of the tank in terms of water volume, as the water would still go under the wedge. Whereas here, a portion of the tank volume is lost as it rises diagonally above the water line.
Many years ago I worked in an aquarium, and we had a tidal flow tank. they could have gone with a closed system and used electronics for the rising and lowering the water levels. But since the aquarium had a flow through system, the simplest method was to have the substrate move up and down instead. It worked so well the kelp was happy to grow there and the fish loved it. But, as above, there are many ways to achieve the same thing.
I love your aquascaping. But that angle has me terrified 😀😀

Having a hillstream myself it is nice to see one on UA-cam. For some reason there aren't that many on here. Some rhinogobius species would work great in this tank too. They will bring life to the bottom of the tank.

3 words for you to research.......laminar flow pump. I think this would give you the best river high flow high oxygen set up ever. They are pricey but the effect is amazing. Alternatively you could use a pond pump 700 gph output with a slotted pipe diffuser to spread the flow with a bio fall dumping into the tank. Just some ideas thought you might like.

I had a temperate river tank, on the level with hill stream and reticulated loaches. Didn't have shiners BITD. Had twin powerheads feeding through a hidden internal custom made filter set up. Luv Ur tank. If only I too had the space. Looks great.

Have plans for a long shallow hillstream, mountain minnow, danio temperate tank so cool to see how you managed flow etc. will definitely try Matt’s idea of an air stone in the inlet. Might slope the substrate rather than the tank though 😊
