Do you agree with my take? What are your thoughts about Meta's move? Going into the offense or simply desperation??
Desperation. It's a move they were forced to make. They didn't listen to, and even kicked out, the original creator of the Oculus, Palmer Luckey, who wanted the Oculus platform to be open from the start. The question is whether it's too late or not on the developer side. Many might be fed up with Meta. Consumers, on the other hand, I've observed that most don't look too deeply into these kinds of happenings and might not even truly understand them when heard in passing.
As we all know, consumers need apps just like app developers need users. Meta may currently hold the most players, but potential and current VR enthusiasts have clearly been looking for alternative options. So I believe the biggest deciding factor will be if Google or its partners will create an attractive offer to go against the Meta lineup.
I largely agree with you, and I have some additional speculation. Since Meta has been heavily subsidizing the sale of Quest headsets, is opening their store to other hardware manufacturers a way together leave the production to others. If that is the case, will we risk a decline in headset performance or an increase in price of newer headsets as a result? Or could we see higher end manufacturers load Meta OS onto their headsets? And 🤞this will put some pressure on Valve if they want the PCVR market via Steam to still exist, so they will actually make a new headset to drive sales.
@@MeianjuI need to see more from Google to think they are serious about getting into VR. They like to announce a lot of projects this are trending but rarely have the conviction to see them develop, and they give up on them. I think it’s good for us consumers that Meta is feeling some competitive pressure though.
I think war about userdata is strong, so Meta dont want give headstart to google. Only one will win on os for free war, like we have seen with android. Apple could be very strong, If they bring more affordable device. Xr has potential past gaming, and so much larger masses so userdata can be main driver. These are such large companies that just game store or selling few headsets isnt enough to make them interested on longterm.
So there will be 3 major XR operating systems competing. This move is brilliant by Meta and good for all.
Meta let 3rd party to make headset sounds like Lenovo Rift S. Feels like they no longer wants to make new headset anymore for gaming. Very interesting how overprice 3rd party headset will be since they are not making money on games
Since this announcement I’m thinking can Meta Horizon OS be used by AR glasses companies like Xreal, Rokid, Viture or is it only for VR headsets ?
i think its for specific approved makers of VR headsets. Its not as open as android that anyone can use. I can't see AR being worth consideration by Meta with how limited they are. And how limited they seem like they'll remain for the next few years at least.
All AR glasses on the market are limited to 3DOF at best, at worst they have no tracking at all and are just a screen you can plug your phone into. They also don't have controllers. They'll have to become a lot more similar to VR headsets before that could be viable.
@@Jdbye no I mean may not not alk the functionalities of s VR headsets but the user interface, the apps because of the OS, and using AR glasses 3dof for whatever limited spatial display they can allow. And using click buttons or touch pad on whichever device can host the OS.
great news. We need copetition. and we need good OS like VisionOS which is very good. Horizon OS is ok not great. it needs to improve
I mean Google made the android OS to begin with, now they're making a faster version specifically for XR in cooperation with Samsung and Qualcomm. Developing ARcore. Meta can't compete with that so would have to join them...
Well said, but the thing is just like Amazon Fire OS, the Meta Horizon OS is based on Android (AOSP) so any app made for Horizon OS can be easily ported to Android XR. And most dev will do that to increase their earning. So, Android XR will catch Horizon OS really quickly. Amazon Fire TV devices had huge head start from Android TV/Google TV but because Google is the mother of Android it quickly catch on and captured global market share.
Like you mention, I really hope that ASUS will put out a standalone headset that has truly good PCVR support. Quest supports PCVR, but it's not as good as a real PCVR headset. And there's no reason why a standalone headset can't do it.
There are three areas where Quest PCVR support falls short:
#1 Display latency and artifacts: ASUS could add DisplayPort connection, and done!
#2 Inside out tracking inferior to lighthouse tracking: The solution here isn't to implement lighthouse support, but rather to improve inside out tracking. The Quest Pro had the right idea with controllers that track themselves. These should be able to rival lighthouse, but Meta abandoned the Quest Pro before perfecting them. Perhaps ASUS will pick up that torch.
#3 Lack of FBT support: I'm hoping that this move to make Horizon OS open will allow FBT solutions to work on the headsets. Right now getting FBT working with a Quest is possible but problematic because Meta will not work with any of the vendors, and so they have to work around significant limitations that wouldn't be there if the headset manufacturer was cooperative at all.
Who cares about the Xbox one? It does nothing new...I'm more interested in what the Asus headset does
Meta and Alphabet (android), are not hardware companies, they are selling adds business. Their business is collecting user data and then selling adds based on that. I guess opening operating system will make games shift more to free with adds stuff. If we can say modern smart phones, social media etc is win for user, I guess then it will be for vr scene too.
I agree with you Ang. However , this is not enough , they need to do more to make customers go for Meta and not to Google or others. Also meta must make it attractive to developers to use their platform. They must build a great financial model where developers find it more interesting than the competition and see it always beneficial to go for Horizon OS .
This feels more reactive than anythign.. they want to maintain domance any way they can.. they want to position themselvs as the “middleware” company for the metaverse. I can’t think of a worse caretaker in some ways considring their bad behavior in privacy
Does Blue Seal ice cream contain real seal meat?
Of course
I think Meta have right now more the focus on AI and is not so much afraid as we think to open there platform littlebit
Hope this means at least one micro OLED headset.
Apple not integrating SteamVR into their craz headset was a blunder they will never recover from. There simply not software for it , people got bored in 3 days.
You can play steamvr
Half joking,- will we see Horizon OS on the Pico one day?
I dint think so.
Well, I would take an MRTV headset like that 😂It's always worth watching your videos.
Lets be honest! All these mega corporations SUX!
But they do produce the devices / operating systems that you use on a daily basis.
Having ridden the M$ WMR bandwagon to oblivion, Lenovo and Asus look to Zuckerberg for VR salvation? Good luck with that.
You summarized the elements of this strategic change very well Sebastian. I agree with your analysis and that it is overall quite positive for the XR industry. Lenovo, Asus and Microsoft (X-box), are solid partners in this new strategy and we should not forget that LG is also partnering with Meta on the future 'Quest Pro 2'.
It sounds like Immersed Visor will be featured at Google IO, and will most likely be integrated with Android XR in some way! Super exciting
Thanks for video , when do you think we will get any more details of the upcoming samsung headset , next month at Google IO ?
I don't know what to think about this. I'll have to see how it goes. I fear that all the other headset makers will fail and this will just create a bunch of confusion as to which headset to buy.
I'd argue this is what makes the PC so powerful and enduring. Platforms come and go but the PC and Windows are still here after decades. I think its confusing looking at new laptops because I don't use them but I know exactly what I want in a desktop. So its really down to us the consumers to just be informed about what the good hardware will be.
Very neat
