Great Danes may have a short life but those few years are priceless. They are the most gentle loving companions you could ever have the honour of experiencing.

I've had 2 in the past and they are great dogs but mine were such babies . Always laying by or on me , waiting at the door if I to the bathroom and even wanting to lean on me if I was cooking . After all of that would I get another ? Heck yeah ! Waiting 5 yrs until I retire because of the long hours I work now .

as a great dane owner and enthusiast i have to say that great danes are unbelieveably gentle, most will try to find a way to gum treats out of your hands rather than bite at them, they are very gentle with kids, and they are very, very protective of their owners

When I got my Great Dane, I hit the jackpot and found this amazing breeder. I got a female that was so gentle and loving. And she lived to be 13 years old!!!! Decades later, I still miss her.

Hi, I had 2 Great Danes at two different times in my life, and just wanted to say that one of the biggest heartbreak of being a Great Dane Family member is "Being away from them for even a Moment!". I love all pups and all the different personalities they have,,, But, I have to have at least one more Great Dane in My Life Time !!! Have to laugh, that 2 foot "Happy Tail", will get me front and back every time coming in through the doorway! lol,. You know what I found unfortunate, That when people came over, My Danes were so Happy, that, all they ever get to see is a slobbering Great Dane, and they never get to see them really and calm and relaxed when their head and face are so warm and soft as the softest velvet that you can imagine ........ omg Love My Danes, and will never forget them ever. Beautiful Video! Thank You, Love the "Great Danes and your Beautiful cat"

Our family has had Danes since 1970, I’m on my last one. My first rescue and abused boy. He just turned 5. I’ve turned him from wanting to bite anyone and showing his teeth to kisses and hugs. The daily love I’ve had to give to turn his little heart to trust and love is well worth it. He still has issues and I’m a softy so it we just talk and barter our way thru it. Treat your animals with love and give them respect ❤

My dane was hit by a car 3 months ago. I had him on a leash but had to get something heavy from the back of my truck. In all those years, he never tried to run into the street. But this one time, I set the leash down for 15 seconds. He saw a dog across the road and took off running. Immediately I saw a coming car and knew there was no way he wouldn't get hit. When the car hit him, it was a direct hit. It hit him so hard that when it ran over him, he slid along behind the car down the road then over a curb and came to rest on a sidewalk. I quickly ran over to him and his eyes were open and he made a noise like, "Ugghhhh...." His eyes were searching around for something/someone when I got to him. I told him not to move and I was there. At that moment he seemed to lose focus and stare out into space. I put my head on his chest to listen and his heart was racing. I kept saying, "It's okay buddy, it's okay" and then his heart stopped, started again and raced, and then stopped for good. At that moment he peed on himself and I knew he was gone for good. It was the saddest thing I've ever seen in my life. In the days after my house was so quiet and empty. I couldn't take it. I said I wouldn't get another Dane but I did. Now I have a fawn female. As with most of the Danes I've had experience with, they are easy dogs to live with and don't cause too many problems. But I have to say, the female is more healthy than my male Dane ever was. And she is more independent and mentally tough. My male Dane spent his first 9 months of his life afraid to be away from me. Also, he was very sensitive to what made me happy. He never once tried to get into garbage. He wasn't obsessed with food. My current Dane can't help herself with food. If I catch her chewing my shoes and scold her for it, she barks at me like, "How dare you! I'll chew anything!" She doesn't seem to feel guilt. My male Dane would chew a shoe (when he was a puppy) and when I'd come home, I'd know he'd done something before I even had seen what he'd done. He'd look guilty. Overall, I felt closer to the male Dane. I'm going to buy a 2nd Dane. But this time, it's going to be a male. This way I can have 2 Danes.

I've known them live to 14, my blue boy Ashley was 10.5 years when he went to sleep as his hind legs gave out. My Harlequin boy Monty is 8 next month in still behaves like a puppy, albeit a 170lb puppy!! I don't exercise for at least 1.5hrs after meals and 10hr prior to meals. Both of mine have been from rescues as there are so many Danes that need new forever homes through no fault of their own. They are without doubt the most characterful of all dogs with big personalities real comedians

One of the biggest health issues with Giant Breed dogs is Torsion Bloat. When my Dane girl was spayed, we also had them do a "tack" procedure. The top of the stomach is tacked to rib muscle, eliminating the chance of torsion bloat. All done laproscopically, quick healing time, peace of mind. I lost a GS to bloat and it was horrible. If you are getting a Dane for extreme size, you have the wrong reason. The bigger they are, the more stress on joints and legs. In females, wait to spay until after the first heat. They need those hormones to close growth plates. Otherwise they get bigger, which leads to a greater likelihood of joint issues.
My girl is under the covers in bed right now, with the little dogs, because little dogs get under the covers, and she thinks she is a little dog...

LYZZY LOVE STAR most vets won’t do it until about a year and a half . To make sure they’re done growing . You can help avoid bloat by elevating their bowls and adding a little water to their food .

I have an 8 month old female Blue Merle Great Dane. Her name is Willow, and she’s a sweetheart. She’s sweet and cuddly one minute, crazy and hyper the next. It’s hilarious to watch her get the zoomies (it’s a Great Dane thing, not quite sure how to explain it other than it’s a sudden burst of energy that hits her randomly and suddenly that has her zipping at full speed and force from one end of the house or yard to the other. Can’t tell you how many times my husband and I both have been either dragged around the yard or about bulldozed in the house because of the zoomies lol). We are struggling with her biting, stealing stuff she shouldn’t have, and jumping. She’s our first Great Dane, so we are a bit lost with how to train a dog so big. Looking into fencing in our backyard and enrolling her into classes. She’s also stubborn, which makes training a bit more difficult when you are a new at it like we are lol. I wouldn’t change a thing about her though, love her to pieces. ❤️

Anti inflammatories dramatically extend their life (from 8-10yrs to 10-12yrs). I've had Great Danes for ~40-yrs and use all natural Curcumin 95 Extract - 500-1000 mg/dy. It also eliminates joint pain (I use it myself).

My Harlequin boy is 10 1/2 years and still as daft as a puppy, his hind legs are getting a bit wobbly due to his old age, but otherwise he's in great shape, he comes to work with me everyday and has his own two seater couch in my shop, though he prefers to be outside on his bed when it is sunny.
Great Danes are incredible dogs that thrive on human contact, they are real comedians and extremely intelligent but can be clumsy, think of a drunken carthorse on rollerskates!
On wet grass they are positively hazardous their steering is lousy and their brakes even worse, I've been pole axed several times.
Both my first Dane and my current boy have been rescues that have needed new homes, my current boy has been with me for 9 years this summer.

Hey, I'd like to have some advice about adopting a Great Dane! I'm 16 and I live in a pretty big appartment (so no garden, unfortunatly) and both of my parents would love to adopt one too. The thing is that they're both working all day except on wednesday, friday afternoon, saturday and sunday. We had a conversation about adoption and they were afraid that the dog'd be lonely... I come home everyday for lunch (I've got a bit more than an hour break) so I told them I could take the dog out, and spend time with him/her during that time. Also I don't come home very late, because my school schedule is quite good. So do you think the dog'd be sad? Because that's really what matters to us... We want to adopt a dog if we're a 100% sure that he/she 's gonna be happy with us! thanks a lot!

lifespan 6 - 8 years?!?!? Now i'm hesitating about getting one... that's pretty short..
i have a perfectly healthy 10 year old shih tzu, and i love him like family, a brother at heart. 10 years seems like nothing when time goes by this fast.
I know lifespan can be longer or shorter, depending on the breed, but still... 6 - 8 years seems a little sad to me :(

6-8 years is an old figure. with the high quality foods of today and the proper understanding of how to prevent bloat there is no reason that one could not expect 10+ years out of their dane. like the woman said in the video, buying from a reputable breeder is your best bet to get a healthy dane that acts like a dane.

    • @Lauriandra1
      @Lauriandra1 10 років тому +2

That's unfortunately common with many of the giant breed dogs. There are a variety of factors involved. But typically speaking (again not true of all breeds) the larger they get the shorter they live. But breed will play heavily into that. A spectacular breed though and well worth rescuing one! :) And FYI, "reputable" breeder does NOT necessarily mean AKC/CKC etc. I would highly recommend vetstreet.com as a source for teaching you about the breed you want, and thus what to look for in a breeder. Even still, if you got 10+ years out of them, you are lucky. Bloat is by far not the only health issue with the Dane.

I have had one die in his sleep as early as 7 and I have had one I had to put down at 14. I have a 3, 4, 10 and 13 year old. It is average as you have said. So 6 to 8 is not bull like the other person said. Some folks get all up in a tissy because it is not THEIR situation.

I've had Great Danes with and without cropped ears. Cropped is better. Great Danes have notoriously difficult ears to keep healthy and clean. One of the major problems is moisture. Great Danes are highly likely to get ear infections if they have natural ears. These infections come because the ear gets moisture in it and does not dry. Cropped ears do not have this issue. You're also more likely to remember to clean your dog's ears if you see in the ear every single time the dog greets you.
Some people are morally opposed to cropped ears, after having bot cropped and natural ears, I would only want cropped ears in the future. Of course I prefer the show crop ear crop style over all other styles, it's the most striking look, but some people prefer to the short crop, I do not. I would never get the long crop or the battle crop. The battle crop is WAY TOO SHORT!
These ear infections are very expensive to treat and very common for Great Danes with natural ears. When and how do they get moisture in their ears? Your guess is as good as mine. It just happens. Cropped ears don't have this problem, they air dry easily.
Some vets hate cropped ears and say there isn't any reason to do it. I disagree because I've seen the difference in their health. Do you think a dog knows how to keep their ears dry? They don't. Do you want to constantly worry about your dog's wet ears getting infected? No. So, just get their ears cropped and forget about it. You'll be glad you did. Your dog will be none the wiser and much happier.
Cropped ears are not painful. You don't change their body chemistry. You do more damage to your dog by getting it neutered than getting its ears cropped. Think about how the lack of testosterone alters your dog compared to how cropping its ears alters it. One changes personality and instincts, the other changes looks. Yet most people support neutering their dog and oppose cropping its ears. Figure that one out.
Believe it or not, but when your dog's ears are cropped you take better care of their ears than you would if you didn't crop them.
