that little no toes practice pop up is the first one that really seemed to help my transition to the shortboard! Thank you!

Am having real trouble and I've surfed plenty but i am 63. So...will do this religiously try to surf as often as I can this summer & will report back in a month. Yoga is not the problem its technique and pull-thru strength. Grateful for this on-point breakdown.

The last two videos I’ve watched of yours (pop up like JOB and this one) you make good points about how their hands are staggered on the pop up. This is a point made I haven’t seen on UA-cam surf analysis videos. Really cool keep up the good stuff!

They are popping hips super high (then pulling knees through). In your scorpion prep movement, butt is obviously going straight up before knees have moved forward any. The pushup, hip pop, scorpion tail (lower leg initiates forward motion to create forward momentum to blast through once the hips are high enough), knee pull-through, back foot, front foot are nearly simultaneous, but if we're breaking it down to learn it that's the order right? (Can you tell if butt pops before heels start driving forward? After trying it, I'm guessing heels start?). ... I'm a super beginner trying to speed up my pop up to catch steeper hollow waves as winter is approaching, got super hard all of a sudden, so I don't know anything, just trying to watch this closely. Simply pulling through without getting hips up would look like a dog dragging its parasite butt through the grass, you'd get rug burn on your knees. What stands out to me in the pro videos is the pros have wildly high hips before feet plant. Curious if you agree. Thanks for the exercises and stretches, great video! 🙏. ... User Novocastrian Waves stole your video title for some good videos but is missing this great analysis and training advice

I've been surfing since 2001. I've never been anything other than shit. I recently surfed Cimaja, West Java, and was just frustrated with my inability.
Still, a day on the water is better than a day at work.

In your videos of the pros they don't seem to be doing the scorpion flick you showed at the end. They seem to be just dragging their hips through and then placing their back foot down without any explosiveness. Am I missing something?

      Google chicken wing pop up.
      1. Plant back foot with bent back leg.
      2. Swing front foot through
There seems to be two schools of thought.
Be fit and mobile enough(young person, older flexible person, or just small in general), and yo can swing both feet through.
Older slower or larger and you do 1 then 2. If you’re fast it looks like both feet anyway.
Have a look at Gerry Lopez surfing at 70.
He’s not swinging both feet through I’ll guaranfuckingtee you.

Good, but you forgot the most important thing on a proper pop up. Always keep your head up. Never drop the head or you will be off point stance wise or fall.

great analysis of the slowmotion footage! however your scorpion technique has nothing to do with your slowmotion analysis. around 5:16 you say not to put your foot down on anything because "when you're in the water you are not going to have anything to push off of ". however you have just showed us that in all 3 examples the surfers are placing their backfoot on the board before they extend their front foot. essentially they are planting their back foot on the board to use it "to push off of". therefore your exercise, although great for the core, is not at all what your example surfers are doing. also it should be noted that the backfoot should be planted on its side (rather than on the toes). this way as you stand your foot does not have to be re-adjusted into a surf stance--it is is already set. this goes along the examples shown with their open side favoring (right hand further back than left hand and chest facing down the line). if you plant the back foot on the inside of your foot (the edge you would pass a soccer ball with) rather than your toes you are essentially favoring the open side. i would like to think of it more like climbing over a fence rather than a burpee. thanks for the video explanation. and love the fitness exercises and stretches anyway! :)

    • @constantnothing
      @constantnothing 3 роки тому

...also your technique is used by some surfers (just not the ones you showed) maybe look for examples of surfer who plant both feet at the same time :)

You have a very detailed mind. Thanks for that. The scorpion is OVER training for what you need on most waves. This way you meet or EXCEED your needs no matter the situation.

@@HydroMind i like that answer! i am a great believer in OVER training, as you call it! if you don't OVER train you are more likely to UNDER perform. keep up the good work!
