I don't buy the insurance in case I scratch a wheel. I buy it in case I total it.
I totaled a rental dodge ram 2500 Cummins 5 minutes after picking it up 😭 it literally had 80 miles on it. Ha ha ! Had insurance 😉
xpusostomos for the average consumer it makes sense, but for someone who rents a car as often as rob it might not be worth it

"If you added up all the insurance you didn't use you'd find out you overpaid" … The insurance industry business model.
Yeah, it's called risk distribution. 99 people overpay for the 1 that actually needs it. Would you want to be potentially bankrupt for being involved in an accident with a Ferrari or even worse... a serious injury or fatality? If it wasn't for insurance, people would not be driving unless they were all super rich. Sure, paying insurance sucks but it's definitely a necessity.
Well... don't you know how to take the fun out of funny...
Insurance can be a prudent option in some cases, but calling it a necessity is problematic. Sticking with car insurance so the conversation doesn't spiral... States with "mandated" auto insurance have higher premiums than states where insurance is optional. Which invalidates "without insurance only rich people would drive.". And in most every case, the cost of an object is greater when insurance is involved. Thus, without insurance, the cost of an accident would actually be lower. And if people had to pay for accident repairs out of pocket, cars would cost less because people wouldn't purchase expensive to repair vehicles.
@@RadRidesByCru Obviously you haven't been hit by an uninsured driver before. I have. Long story short, it sucks. I'm not arguing that insurance is expensive, it is. However it provides complete assurance if an accident happens. I don't care how careful you drive - you can always still get into an accident. People without insurance are the worst. They tend to be the selfish pricks. Trust me, if insurance companies just poofed out of existence tomorrow, the world would be a much worse place. Sure, it has it's flaws but it keeps people in check. Imagine if everyone had to go to court over car damages for EVERY accident - because that what would happen if insurance wasn't around. The court system would be overwhelmed... which costs money... same cycle except now you're dealing with lawyers who get paid $500/hr.
heck 2 years ago my insurance paid out 500+k dollars for an accident, uninsured motorist hit head on
AnonyPersons… Knock on wood, never been hit by an uninsured motorist... but I have been hit by insured motorists and my insurance company paid them even when they shouldn't have, which is the worst example of basically the same thing. If insurance companies vanished police would still be the first line in determining fault, just as they are now, and the courts would likely only see a minimal increase as only those who *could* afford to go to court would... and the judgements would only be worth the paper they're written on. Which is the only real value of car insurance... it's easier to get money from an insurance company than from their customers.
Rob is truly the biggest genius ever. He damages a car and makes a video about it which 100% pays for any possible damages sheesh lol
Good call not committing insurance fraud my man!
Wow, really? A hefty insurance claim every so often is a great way to get things caught up
He should just do it and not make a UA-cam video saying he gonna do it!!!!
This barely qualifies for insurance fraud if at all, not even sure the company would care, if anything he didn’t do it because the deductible was as much or more than just paying for a wheel.

I just rented a car overseas a couple weeks ago, do it several times a year from the same company in that country and this time I ended up making a turn and driving over some mud on the side of the road that ended up being a big drop, the car literally bottomed out and the bottom slammed onto the road on one side and I had to drag it forward to get it out making the most horrible noise, whole side covered in mud and looked terrible, hubcap was kind of fucked up; took it back when I was flying out expecting to be charged for some sort of damage and the girl was like, looks fine, wrote it up and took the keys and that was it. Still can't believe I got away with that.
venom5809 until now!😂 Did you hear about the programmer at Capital One who hacked a bunch of accounts then bragged about it on the internet?? 🤦🏻♂️😂
This is why I don't care what anyone says, I would never buy a rental car
When I rented a car in Dublin, I returned it with scratches all down the passenger side from me scraping against bushes when letting people by on the narrow country roads. Didn't notice until I was filling up prior to returning it. I thought they might say something, but when I returned it, they guy looked it over, rubbed a panel where it was scratched, and said "Looks good to me!" I did opt for full insurance, so would have been covered anyway. I wonder if he took that into account.

You personally never needing insurance and as a result not getting your "money's worth" is not a good reason to not get insurance. It's not a bank account, it's not an investment, you buy it hoping you never have to use it in order to protect yourself from being among the small number of people who get financially ruined because they also didn't think it was worth it to have insurance and cause a multi car pileup.
Basically every car has slightly scratched rims here that are daily driven, people don't even bother repairing it
Sixt is usually very lenient when it comes to minor nicks and scratches. At least on their lower end cars they consider minor curb damage as normal wear and tear. Im curious to hear how much they want for the damage on that M4 wheel.
Sixt, atleast some airport stations, are freaking bonkers. They tried to pull a fast one on my rental, "finding two new" damages... photographed one damage from wrong side of car(!), the other one was actually in their "evidence photo" but severly overstated, saying >50mm long scratch, actual size about 30mm. However... since I videotaped the car I just sent them a few frames from video where I pointed out the damages pre-existing.
The worst part is I actually walked thru the car with the Sixt representative before going and she took notes for the first 3 to 5 (out of 12-15 nicks, scratches, bumps) then she sort of zoned out and just started rolling her eyes.
Problem is Europcar is just the same, atleast at Weeze Airport they tried same shit on me.

Rob your information is super valuable. Thank you
I agree with never taking the rental companies insurance above what they are obliged to offer under the agreement. I disagree with having no insurance whatsoever in Europe. You should always take out a third party policy for car hire excess insurance. Costs £45 a year and covers any excess payment these companies try to take off you.
Just an FYI for everyone that isn't Mr. Spaghetti: review your coverages very closely before declining the Collision Damage Waiver. Most of the time your auto insurance will NOT cover any damages outside of the USA (Canada is sometimes an exception).
The credit card coverage can also vary wildly; sometimes it's useful, sometimes it's a huge pain. This is because it will sometimes force you to file on your auto policy before you can even access it, which can affect your rates.
An umbrella policy can oftentimes help out when traveling abroad, but since they are all different always check before assuming.
Just my 2 cents from what I've seen as a claims adjuster.
I curbed my brand new car wheel for the first in my life this year. You are right feeling was awful.

Avis Prestige is another solid company in Germany. Recently rented a 911 GTS with 4,000km for 288 Euro for the day. Extra insurance was only 25 a day. Beware that most credit card insurance will not cover vehicles with a value over $65,000 or high end luxury/sports cars.
You’re a Godsend. Keep the info coming
I always decline insurance. But once I did get damage to a rental and had to go through the whole process, one thing to remember that your credit card (in my case VISA) only picks up whatever your auto insurance does not cover first, or your credit card will pick up the $500 insurance deductible so you are not out anything out of pocket. Either way you have to make a claim on your auto insurance so your rates could go up.
Picture of every panel... As an insurance adjuster, thats what I tell everyone who rents a car that I care about... Video is next level that most people dont do but I always suggest it.
Great car for the drive you did...., FYI - Expect the bill from Sixt within 6-12 weeks for a new wheel, standard practice to replace it on that type of car , I went through this 2 yrs ago on a 640d Gran Coupe, that came to 1523.39 Euro's......., easy way to avoid charges like that is rent with American Express, their Premium Car Rental Insurance will cover vehicles up to $100000.00 at $24.95 per rental period not per day.
dont swap wheels, do the right thing. glad you are an honest guy!
gonna be more than $300 for that wheel mate
Usually curbed rims can be fixed around $150-250, here in the States.
I guess that'll come down to Rob's trade knowlede, negotiating skills and contracts. It shouldn't be an expensive repair, but if it ends up being rrp + balancing + labour, it could be.. Which got me wondering. If the rental company insists you buy a new wheel, can you insist you keep the old one? Seems fair, and even with shipping and a refurb, could recoup some of the costs.
I doubt they will want to fix that, it's going to be out of their fleet soon with that mileage.
Nope, more... I similarly curbed a Jaguar Rim im Germany and had to pay 430€...
@121bham I'm thinking what's fair, vs what's in a contract. Point of those is to make the injured party whole, so covering their costs. If the renter's a bit shady, and assumes the renter doesn't know what a fair deal looks like, then they (or their insurers) get ripped off. I guess that could get even more complicated if it's a big rental agency and the rules are sent down from on high. It's why I like Rob's videos though as he walks us through how these things work.
Thank you I will take future reference 👌
The embroidery on the seats is what you were trying to say and yet they are very nice
I dunno man. I never used to get the insurance. Used to be very careful, take the photos on pick-up, report existing damage, clean the car before returning, stay and wait for the inspection when returning. Then the last time I hired a car I got the zero deductible insurance. I think hire was like €150 and this added €70. When I returned the vehicle as I stepped out of it the guy pointed out a scrape on the lip and next to a wheel arch, pre-existing actually marked on the collection paperwork, I just said “I don’t care mate” handed him the keys and walked off to catch my flight. It was great. I’d happily pay a fair bit extra to do that every time.
The sound of curbing a wheel is unmistakable and gut wrenching.
I always photograph rental cars before and after the rental. It has saved me money two times. Sixt has some great cars in Germany. Good prices too.
Lots of credit cards offer insurance on rental cars if you use the card for the rental purchase. I use an app called “Sift” to check what each of my cards cover to know which to use and think it can be handy for stuff like this to save money on insurance. Some credit cards also offer travel insurance which is great too. Would highly recommend checking that out
A new BMW Styling 437M rim is about 1000€/$1150... just saying...
I saw after I got my credit card through chase that it has rental car insurance, love it!!
In Europe there will often be basic insurance included in the hire but with a very large excess, payable if you damage something. To avoid the excess you will be pressure-sold an enhanced hire cover that doubles maybe triples the daily rate....or you buy an annual policy that just covers your excess, costing about $50 p.a. but not from the hire companies. If you damage something the hire company takes the excess from you credit card then you claim back from your annual policy.
There are still things like hit & runs, accidents with wild animals, theft, vandalism etc which can get you even how careful of a driver you are.
Yeah. I read about nightmares with small European rental companies so I rented a John Cooper Works Edition Mini a couple weeks ago from Hertz (Portugal). Declined insurance as my credit card claims they have CDW coverage and everything turned out fine. Only maybe quibble was that after I rented it I read a guy on a forum that said the very same Hertz at Lisbon airport charged him €150 for bringing back a dirty car, so I found a bucket and a rag and gave the car a quick street wash before taking it back. Rental guy gave the car an A-OK on inspection and I was done. It was like $30/day.
Going to Italy in a month and am getting a rental through Sixt. Plan on doing the same thing with pictures and proof of ALL pre-existing damage. Do not let these people dive in to your pockets due to your own negligence.
In Europe, usually you are insured against damages to a point. The rest you have to put down a deposit for, known as the excess. Typically 600-1500 euros for a normal car. This is what a lot of rental companies seem to try and scam you out of. You can take additional insurance though called "Excess Insurance" for a fraction of what the rental car company charges for its full insurance and claim any money back from them that you have lost on your deposit.
today rob tells us to play the lottery with rental insurance. it's a good strategy until it isn't... I don't think it's a stupid thing to do under certain circumstances(like with rob) but recommending it to people isn't something I would do with a clear conscience.
I curbed a wheel on my Scion TC trying to parallel park. The sound was similar to a plastic bumper slowly being crushed. And I heard it as soon as it happened, even with the windows up and music playing.

Question: if you buy insurance from the car rental company or third party and something happens to the car, does that goes through the claim process which can potentially increase your own car insurance premium? Or they just take care of it on the spot without being reported.
I was in the Frankfurt area in May those parking garages are really tight! Luckily I rented a Volvo XC90 and instead of curbing a wheel I wheeled the curb.
Hey Rob! Quick question, how many Kilometers did Sixt allow you to do for your trip? Did you work out some sort of deal when renting the car for excess Kilometers?
I also curbed my M4 when I did European Delivery. You are right about the German Garages. Luckily it was only 2 inches long
As a side note, it's worth calling your credit card company to find out what they cover and how they cover incidents. Most credit card companies carry secondary insurance. This means the credit card company will step in AFTER your insurance company does their part. Plus the customer is typically on the hook to reimburse the rental company for the time to repair as the vehicle couldn't be rented. Not to mention the higher premiums due to the claim.
But at the end of the day, I'm with Rob. I have a good driving history, in the event something happens, my bill will likely be a sum of all the times I've declined the rental company's insurance. I'll simply have to deal w/ the long term damage.
$300 for a BMW M4 wheel? In Germany? Are you drunk?
perhaps that's the cost to resurface the wheel. do you live in Germany? you can get an M2 / M4 wheel resurfaced for around 100 Euros.

Nice to see you in an M4. Hopefully you enjoyed it!
As an actuarial science student theres this quote my teacher used to say "you don't plan accidents, they just happen. That's what insurance is for"
I can understand people curbing wheels. It's a driving mistake, but it happens.
What scares me is people being so oblivious to what's happening around them that they don't notice curbing a wheel.
In a lot of places the insurance the car rental company sells you specifically excludes wheels anyway. Then there's often an excess of a couple of grand regardless.
The problem with not having insurance in general is that you have to hold some money on the shelf always ready to pay for the losses. I choose to make that money work instead and insure everything i can. 9 times out of 10 that money will earn me more than i pay extra for the insurance. Plus you sleep much better when you know everything you care about is insured. That alone is worth the cost.
Bro that parking lot in trier is so damn tight, lived there for a year also small parking places with huge suvs lol
Today Mr. Spaghetti discovers that garking a wheel feels like your own skin is being torn off you, if you are a halfway decent driver.
And, that it is not credible for any person to claim not to know exactly and precisely what they've done. As humans, we literally extend our bodies into a vehicle, and the level to which we are able to do this directly corresponds to our skill at driving. This is why missing the synchro and graunching a gear actually hurts us, physically, and if you watch someone do it, they'll ALWAYS wince at the pain they feel.

So, always do insure your rental. If you hit anything or anything or anyone hits you and drives away you will pay for it. Every bigger damage will cost you a lot of money. Don't insure it and you only have a 3th party insurance. Tell me, who only has a 3th part insurance on his own new car? Insure your car via the website your booking from and don't insure it at the desk, it costs like double.
Also always inspect the rental before you leave and make pictures, that way you will never ever have discussions. It's so so simple....
I had the worst experience with Sixt on a trip to Holland and Germany over spring break this year and the customer "service" was total garbage. Rent from anyone else. Their car broke down in Germany and I spent well over 6 hours on the phone, an extra 200km drive and 4 hours of driving plus a day of in Germany waiting and endless frustration. If an old Romanian woman offers to rent you a donkey take that over dealing with Sixt.
This is why I hate renting cars, documenting every little scratch so you don't end up being charged for damage you didn't do. I don't see how car sharing is going to scale if you have to screw around for 20 minutes every time before you get in the car.
But rob that car has holes in the seats too😂
