  • A documentary on Owen Barfield (1898-1997). Owen Barfield was a Christian philosopher educated at Oxford, where he met his good friend C.S. Lewis in 1919. Barfield was instrumental in converting C.S. Lewis to theism during the early period of their friendship.
A member of the Inklings, Barfield's thinking informed the writings of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, among others. His abiding interest was in the history of language, through which he investigated the evolution of consciousness.

this guy has got to be Bombadil. the poetry. the first and last and the one who stays stationery, upon unassailable ideas but also in one place. just saying.

If you really look at a simple phenomenon like, say, a flower and the butterfly hovering over it, it will really tell you of itself that it is not something that arose through the interplay of discrete physical units, but the material manifestation of an immaterial unity from which both flower and butterfly have sprung. An invisible "common ancestor," if you like. - 23:42

Fabulous to see and hear Barfield the man himself - I've heard so much about him from very smart modern thinkers in recent weeks. See Mark Vernon's book and channel for more!

What a gem. I know of Barfield from biographies of C S Lewis, but never expected to come across the man himself. Born the same year as Lewis. Wow - I used to have a terrible stammer, stutter, such as Barfield describes - the hard sounds, the b's, the p's, the t's, the d's and in my case an s followed by a consonant, like 'sn'. Still get afflicted by the stutter sometimes. If anyone reading this suffers in a similar way, learn to relax. Your stuttering is likely caused by not breathing properly, because of nerves. No one stutters when they sing.

I can barely begin to grasp what Barfield is trying to say, but I'm intrigued beyond words. I'll have to read his seminal works some day.

wow... I've known little to nothing about Barfield, and this was a wonderful intro to his life and thought. I'm stunned at how recently he lived. Heading over now to Kindle to get a copy of Saving the Appearances....

I am just delighted to SEE Barfield! I knew he lived at The Wallhatch in Forest Row, which is not many miles from my home. When I used to drive to Eastbourne, the road passed through Forest Row and I would give a nod to The Wallhatch, thinking of Barfield. Thank you so very much for this video.

Subtitles of Barfield speaking are so inaccurate that they are a distraction.

I had the honor of being in a small discussion with Barfield and 4-5 others in 1976. He told us the story of how “The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe” came to be dedicated to his daughter Lucy. Seemed to be proud of it. I didn’t realize at the time what a great mind he had. Glad to have rediscovered him in the meantime.
