96-94 Fury. I had Fury winning round 1 and 3 other than that I agreed with the broadcasters card. I think it becomes controversial because of the biased commentary which I see time and time again in British boxing. I think at the start of the fight they were maybe surprised that McDermott was having little successes here and there and really talked it up and began convincing themselves and others that John was winning rounds. Especially the guy with the thick accent. 98-92 is pretty wide which adds to the controversy.
That's how they used to score fights. It was after this fight that the BBBofC brought judges in to score fights. Obviously they thought the decision was a disgrace as well.
Either way it doesn't matter. Every all time great has lost. Ali , Robinson , Mike Tyson and even Mayweather as he lost against Castillo. Doesn't change the fact that at his best Fury could beat anyone from any era at 6 ft 9 and 19 stone.
I think McDermott won but Fury fought moving backwards in the first five rounds so I don't think the TV score was so one sided. I've got McDermott 3-2 in first five not 4-1.
I’m halfway into the 4th round and the commentary is absolutely embarrassing so far. I have Tyson 3-0 so far. The bias towards everything McDermott does is ridiculous.
I gave McDermott 3,4,5 and 8. I think 1 and 3 were both pretty close but otherwise I can't see much more room to give either man a round over the other. 98 to 92 is ridiculous but Tyson winning the fight to me isn't unfair. I think this fight was so much closer than the 98 to 92 that was scored and way closer than all the band wagoners who say McDermott got robbed say it was as well. Just my opinion but that's what I believe. I guess this is why we're supposed to have 3 judges.
The last two rounds fury hurt McDermott and the reff stepped in a few times in the same manner that save mcD from being knocked out and when he turned and went to the ropes is when one of the 3 I'm speaking of started and finished.
The BBBC changed their scoring rules and procedures as a result of this bad decision. But in this fight, you also notice what happens when even a good local fighter who lets his hands go imposes himself on Fury. Very few of his opponents move their feet or throw combinations, the way heavyweights used to. Fighters with an aggressive Plan A, the ability to throw those shots, and a Plan B at least, have given Fury a great deal of difficulty. Wilder had no ability to do that....he lacks even fundamentals. Whyte is tough, but a sluggish slugger. Fury is "retiring" without a single world-class, two-fisted opponent on his record. Usyk is leagues beyond any of Fury's opponents in technique, aggression, footwork, and capacity to throw combinations.
I even wonder how it was allowed to have a single person decide who will be national champion. Yes, Uzyk is a class higher than Fury. Will they ever fight? Fury has the balls to do it?
I remember the furore that surrounded this fight but this is the first time I've seen it. I had it 96-94 to McDermott. 98-92 to Fury is a joke. How could you possibly think McDermott only won two rounds? LOL Via The Guardian: "Frank Maloney suggested O'Connor looked at his fighter's corner and had flashbacks to 1977 - the night John's father knocked seven bells out of O'Connor at the Royal Albert Hall." 29:41 "Every time Terry O'Connor has refereed McDermott, he's lost." Hmmmmmm
@@quackster8295 agreed, slight edge to Fury, very close fight. no way it's a robbery. it's razor tight, and the scoring was wrong, but the outcome of Fury winning i think is right. he just threw so many more punches, and always threw back in combos when he got hit hard. he wasn't knocked down or even close to dominated. this was CLOSE. slug fest, great fight. bias commentators, they keep saying another round to Mcdermott, and i'm thinking what? how so sure? many of those i gave to Fury by a hair. not an easy fight to score. McDermott was robbed against Danny Williams their first fight though
Honestly, I've watched this fight twice now and both times I gave it to fury. I had it 7 to 3 fury with John winning 4, 8 and 9. The commentary and highlights were all for McDermott. Very biased. Fury out jabbed him and landed so many more shots. John landed less shots but better shots but he still got out landed. Watch the fight without the commentary. Fury won this fight.
I love Tyson Fury (we follow each other on Twitter) but he clearly lost this fight. He redeemed himself in the rematch 9 months later but this asterisk will always be on his record. Jim Watt's scorecard pretty much summed this fight up. 6 rounds to 4.
almost every human is a retard, so pointing out majority opinion is retarded in itself. It was a clear pummeling. However he did show his chin this early on
@big dog Same. Lots of sheep jumping on this 'McDermott clearly won' bandwagon, nope it's just the overly biased commentary that makes it seem that way.
I had it a draw, but I could see the argument for McDermot, as he just kept walking Fury down and did some good inside work. Then again I can kind of understand why a loan judge/referee could give it to Fury, due to the sheer volume he was throwing. McDermot might have landed the stronger punches, but a lot were coming off Fury's shoulders and from inside fighting. So it is understandable if the ref missed some of his punches in a close fight. Whereas Fury was continuously snapping McDermot's head back as he landed cleanly with "cuffing shots" and "arm punches" The commentary for this was more of a disgrace than the decision if you ask me
Im also a big fury fan but a draw would of been a fair result, what a top quality fight this was though and I am glad that fury pulled through this fight and kept the unblemished record.
Yeah I could have seen if going either way. I had Tyson up one round but I wouldn’t argue against a draw or a McDermott win. There were lots of very close rounds between the two but the commentary swayed a lot of people’s opinions. They had Fury losing before he entered the ring
Problem, even back then is/was that McDermott was not as marketable as Fury or Danny Williams who he also claimed to have gotten robbed against. An average looking Joe who was a decent boxer but nothing to write home about. That is why, the marketable fighters, always get preferential treatment when it comes to close fights that go to a decision. There is too much hype and money invested in them, to fall against more experienced boxers who fight better on the night, but don't set the world on fire. Fury had a more marketable back story and that has helped him get where he is today, as well as having equal talent, and boxing IQ/ability. its show business and entertainment too as well as one of the toughest sports on the planet.
From wiki On 11 September 2009, Fury fought John McDermott (25-5, 16 KOs) for the English heavyweight title, and won via a points decision.[54] Fury came in as a 1-6 favourite but produced a poor display, and the 98-92 decision by the referee Terry O'Connor was criticised as a "travesty".[55] The decision led the British Boxing Board of Control to mandate three judges for all English titles, and the board ordered a rematch.[56]
I'd say this fight could've been a draw. McDermott did win more than the 2 rounds but it wasn't a clear win for McDermott like some think. Tyson beat him in the rematch and he's done a lot of work to get where he is. Tyson has been robbed himself, he clearly won the 1st wilder fight.
I see fury years ago training , and said then he was special, he's just so hard to tag clean, as long as fury is in a good place mentally then no one will beat him ..
Massive fury fan but he lost this fight no doubt about it, fury did him in the rematch though so what can you say boxing isn’t subjective it really isn’t that hard to score
@@peacelove8223 yes it was close but furys rounds were very close where as McDermotts won his rounds more clearly. The ref must of been paid of to give it 8 rounds to 2.
@@sorchadunbar3341 Exactly. 90% of people here are just commenting like sheep saying 'John was robbed' after half watching 3 rounds and mainly listening to the horrendous commentary to form their opinion lmao, trust me that's what casuals do, during a 12 round fight my mates are usually on their phones on facebook or twitter during the middle rounds of a fight until near the end and then just regurgitate whatever they heard the commentators say throughout those rounds they didn't really watch and use that as their own opinions for who won the fight 🤣🤣

Of course, these commentators had Fury losing even before he walked in. This was a close fight but I have Fury winning by one round. Hell, I could’ve seen McDermott winning as well. Some of these rounds are close, closer than people think. You need to watch this fight without the commentary to realize
rorythered I think Tyson edged it yeah, it was just the shock of how well JM did wasn’t it, get a close fight with a big prospect or popular champ and it’s a robbery.
If Andy Ruiz get to top shape and be motivated to the fullest i think then Ruiz would give Fury a good fight after watching this fight. The smaller guy is more clinic against bigger guys.
Fury was poor in this fight and was lucky to get the win but if we look at what happened after in his career he proved he is a lot better boxer than John mcDermott, everything happens for a reason and this could of derailed Tyson's future so maybe he deserved a bit of luck in the end
One of the worst decisions i've ever seen. 98-92! Where the fuck did Terry O'Conjob get that from! Oh That's right, he got it from the hiding that John McDermott's dad gave him when they fought each other. Sour grapes and revenge the ref? And Fury knows damn well he lost that, and lost it by some distance. I'm not surprised John McDermott pissed off out of the ring. I don't normally agree much with what Frank/Kellie Maloney says, but on this one he/she was absolutely bang on, Terry O'Connor should never have been allowed near a boxing ring again (or at least for a pretty long time). That's a worse result than when Ricky Burns got a draw against Raymundo Beltran and Amir Khan got robbed against Lamont Peterson.
+kdlofty - at that point Fury had only fought 16 rounds as a pro and had never been beyond 4 rounds...he beat John's ass proper in the rematch. Sounds like sour grapes coming from you. This was a toe to toe slug fest. Big John landed at a better % but Fury landed as often and threw far more. Fury also took the second half of the 9th and aced the 10th...making John turn his back 2x's. Fury's lack of defense via inexperience is what allowed John to land often but Fury was the better boxer and more versatile...and showed more heart in the championship rounds. It is what it is.
Not at all, just a factual statement backed by ex professionals. For the record, i agree with you about the rematch, fury hammered him all over place. I mean credit where it's due, fury still has some questions to answer (as do most boxers), but one of the big ones was his chin, and fair play to him he's answered that, Steve Cunningham dropped him with good shot be got back up and deservedly won the fight. I've only seen him stunned twice, one was when Derek Chisora caught him in their first fight, and the second was when he hit himself! (which you have to admit was pretty hilarious). The second fight with Derek Chisora was one of the most sided beatings i've ever seen. Up until a few years ago David Price was ahead of him (before he got found out for his lack of professionalism, and is now to all intent's and purposes finished, unless he gets rid of his entire "team" and buggers off to america and completely starts over again, but i can't see it myself), but now Fury's just flown past him and is in a different league. I Don't know about you, but don't see him beating Vladimir Klitschko or Deontay Wilder. Will he be a world champion? If the belts get split again yes, or if Klitchsko retires (which i don't think is too far away). And then there's the Phenomenon that is Anthony Joshua.......
gypsychavie this decision changed British title fight rules ,the ref does not score these bouts anymore judges do ,it really says something doesn't it.

I scored it a draw, but it was tough to call.. This was a classic case of 1 guy landing many weak punches per round vs 1 guy landing fewer but more effective punches per round.. Those are always tricky to call. People calling the decision a robbery are exaggerating a bit imo.

Boxers have way more brain damage & health problems than MMA fighters

Piss poor decision, clearly protecting Fury's record, disgrace.
Nonsense. Fury won the first four rounds and the last two. The announcers were clearly pro Mcdermott.

McDermott was the better man this day
Wow McDermott got absolutely jobbed
The fight ended, both fighters put their hands in the air. The referee grabbed Furys hand. Which gave fury the win? Wait what?
First time I scored it 98-92 to Fury. Second time I scored it 97-93 to Fury.
I do think Fury won the first fight tbh
I’m halfway into the 4th round and the commentary is absolutely embarrassing so far. I have Tyson 3-0 so far. The bias towards everything McDermott does is ridiculous.
Thank fuck your not a ref then
@@freddy512 I had it the same.
Well said! This is not close. McDermott winning this fight is a myth.
McDermott definitely won that fight. Watch not only the interview but this entire hour fight and I'm a huge fan of Tyson fury but he lost.
Nathan Kotenberg, Nahh you’re clearly a Fury hater
LOL

I had it 5-4-1 to Fury. It was a close fight if you don’t listen to the biased commentary, close rounds
@elliot j Judging was bad because scorecard was wide.. No one is saying Fury won the landslide but that sky commentary was so biased

Any idea why the referee judged this❓
This previous bout for the English title had judges: boxrec.com/media/index.php?title=Fight:1161246
Whereas Fury was continuously snapping McDermot's head back as he landed cleanly with "cuffing shots" and "arm punches"
The commentary for this was more of a disgrace than the decision if you ask me
SansAppellation couldn’t agree more, big big Tyson fan but I would 100% agree a draw, you seem knowledgable what’s your opinion of the wilder fight?
Tyson 10-8 that last round, which puts him over +1 on my card. Big Mac was gassed and hung on him eating big combos.
When fury won round 7 it was down hill for McDermott
tyson won this fight,it was close but the points added up for tyson, the commentaters were bias

From wiki
On 11 September 2009, Fury fought John McDermott (25-5, 16 KOs) for the English heavyweight title, and won via a points decision.[54] Fury came in as a 1-6 favourite but produced a poor display, and the 98-92 decision by the referee Terry O'Connor was criticised as a "travesty".[55] The decision led the British Boxing Board of Control to mandate three judges for all English titles, and the board ordered a rematch.[56]
Definitely not a landslide for either fighter. Almost all rounds were close
And tyson fury floored him in the rematch
I'd say this fight could've been a draw. McDermott did win more than the 2 rounds but it wasn't a clear win for McDermott like some think. Tyson beat him in the rematch and he's done a lot of work to get where he is. Tyson has been robbed himself, he clearly won the 1st wilder fight.
I scored it a draw.
Agreed
I'm just glad I was the one not having to make the call! It was a good fight but Fury's youth definitely showed. Today's Fury much different results.
The commentary is biased. Saying McDermott had the better start is absolute bollucks. First 3 rounds to Fury no doubt.
First 3 rounds for fury
I see fury years ago training , and said then he was special, he's just so hard to tag clean, as long as fury is in a good place mentally then no one will beat him ..
Sounds like a built in excuse "as long as"....If Fury's not in a good mental state maybe he shouldn't be fighting 🤔

+Justin Town lol Facts means sour grapes? FOH with that dumb logic
kdlofty Beltran and Bradley Vs Pacquiao and now GGG Vs Canelo are some of the worst I've ever seen. This though was 🤐 ....
