Youre a cool local guy and imformative. Keep up the good work 👍
Dude this was a super informative video!! Thanks. I'm definitely going to use this to go fishing.
Very nice share 👌🏻
Great job
I still love this video, definitely going there a few times this year for Gato fishing
Thanks for the vid always meeded som better spots tp check out
How big are the blue gills you are catching on this lake? I need to find 10 inch bluegill for my school's master angler program thanks the video is very helpful.
Mendota has 10 inchers but they are rare. I think the best consistent place for big ones for actually on the triangles at Monona by the railroad tracks. Spot is usually taken though. I've seen big ones on the Wisconsin River, at Indianford dam, and at Beloit on the Rock River.
I've lived in the Madison area for near 25 years, now. I don't fish gills much as I used to, but I've only ever caught 1 10"+ gill, and had another one on that I lost that I bet would've been close to 11. Seen a couple of others caught. They're out there, but they're unusual.
Thanks for the info :) wanted to do some fishing in Madison since I’ve transferred, but don’t know if any good spots other than in front of memorial union.
I've actually never really fished in front of the Union that much, too many people there.
@@ancientfishing usually best to go at night! My friend and I caught 8 walleye there in a single night. There wasn't too many people fishing there either
I'll be up there next week (in a boat). Where is a good spot to find some of those big Mendota perch?
I don’t really fish for perch but I’ve caught them out around Marshall park in the early morning hours when the weather gets warmer.
Note to who picked the Fish image for the video, THERE ARE NO COD IN LAKE MENDOTA!!
You should look into getting a tv show. Youre quite knowledgeable and entertaining
I want to do a series called “dangerous fish of Wisconsin with very sharp teeth” but I don’t catch the monsters most of the time.
Never knew they can get that big.
I usually fish Tenney. Gotten pretty much everything there, but no catfish. I live by Marshall Park, only fished it once (in June) and didn't have a bite, but I will have to give it a try next May-June it sounds like
Got to do it right before sunrise for perch
@@ancientfishing Good to know. I live close to there, so way shorter drive. I will probably give it a go one of those days
Got a gatofish at tenney today.
@@ancientfishing congrats! Off the breakwall?
@@millec60 yeah, where the rest of the lake enters the breakwater.
What’s the best areas to fish for Largemouth/Smallmouth bass?
Governor island is good throughout most of October
How long does it take to walk to picnic point? Give or take?
There’s a parking lot right outside of picnic point. It’s free on Sundays I think. Takes 15 min or so to reach the end of the point.
FRAU(rhymes with eyebrow) - SHE. A very wealthy family with lots of history in Madison, you'll see their(usually Jerome and his wife Pleasant Rowland) philanthropic gifts all over the city. I know I've seen their names on plaques at the downtown library, by the zoo, the Overture center, etc. Just saw they're putting up a lot of money for a new youth symphony center on East Washington.
Anyways, cool video, excited to see more!
The kids of the original owner have basically screwed over the employees who worked there. The dad was from what I heard a real good guy. The dolls seem to be more important than printing.
I was told by some UW cops that i wasnt allowed to fish there so i went to the police station and asked for an official ruling. The head cop found out that you cant fish any University property anywhere in Wisconsin. Suprised the heck out of a bunch of cops that stood around.
He said if my feet were wet i was in the lake and i was legal and the cops in the boathouse at Tenney had the lake as their territory. I could have the UW cops call them and find out i was actalually legal.
If you go out there at night or on the weekends people dont screw with you. I have seen so many cops put there and it was just those two that screwed with me. So i leave before 6 am and get out there after 10 pm.
That was at the Union downtown.
Did you mistakenly say saugers instead of walleye, because I don't think I've ever caught a sauger in the madison chain of lakes.
Could have been a walleye. Kinda looked like a sauger that was pulled from tenney breakwater.
@@ancientfishing I'm sure there could be a few in the lakes, but I've never seen any caught in the 30 years I've been fishing them. More of a river fish if you ask me.
@@SickBuckNaStY True, its hard to tell the difference at one glance.
Nor have I. I've asked DNR before, and they told me there's no evidence of any population of Sauger, Blue Catfish, or Flathead Catfish on Lake Mendota. Granted, that was 10 years ago. 3 times since I moved back up to Madison I had some fellow swear up and down they caught a huge Flathead Cat on Mendota, and when they show me their photo, it's not a flathead, it's just a really big Channel Cat. 3 times that has happened. Folks need to work on their fish ID skills. 🙂. We do have Lake Sturgeon, though. Token population, but they're out there, and some of them are gigantic. I saw a giant tootling around the inside of the Tenney Breakwater in November a few years back. Hard to tell from the angle, but she looked to be at LEAST as long as I am tall. 6 footer. Local dive/salvage expert took some underwater photography of two giant Sturgeon off the MG&E warm water discharge on Lake Monona many years ago. Around 7 footers. Probably close to 100 pounds, and probably near as many years old. DNR has brought up baby Lake Sturgeon in their fyke net surveys, so there is evidence they successfully breed on the Madison Chain, but in small numbers.
I'm going to have to check some of these spots I didn't know about out. FYI Tenney requires some specialized techniques, and all the hippies in the summer ruin it.
For catfish. You really just need to fish it at night. Haven’t gotten a bass or carp there yet, probably some techniques you need for that.
Lol I live really close to u
