The Schilke's both suit the horn best to my ears, with the Geib winning out (for me) for the balance of body/sousaphone brightness & edge through the whole range. Great playing!
Hi Richard ,did I found on your Page fingerings for beginners from Sousaphone playing ? I learned with a Jupiter 3 Valve B Tuba but at Marching want playing Sousaphone. When I saw this Video I buy me a Schilke69C4 other Mouthpieces not found in Web at moment :/ your Sounds are great
Hi Mario Thanks for getting in touch. I don’t have a fingering chart for Bb tuba but try this one. www.washoeschools.net/cms/lib/NV01912265/Centricity/Domain/1409/tuba.pdf The 69c mouthpiece is a little different to what I play. I’ve not tried one before but it has a much rounder rim which some people find more comfortable but doesn’t really suit me. But mouthpieces are very personal things and what works for me may not work for you so if you can try a few out before you buy it might help you get an idea what works best for you. Hope that helps. Richard
I think the Geib worked well for this recording process, but that being said, a lot would depend on the gig surely? I would be interested in listening to the mouthpieces being played aggressively? The majority of my Sousa gigs are outdoors, marching and playing loud second line numbers. I’ve been looking at getting a Kelly Stainless Steel as well but nowhere in the UK at the moment!
Hi Tom, thanks for your thoughts, I really appreciate other's opinion and perspectives. I'll let my neighbours know it was your idea that I try this trial out again in my garden 🤣The other scenario is that a sound engineer will stick an SM58 down the bell and make the thing sound like a brass subwoofer regardless of what mouthpiece I use! In all seriousness, yes context is everything and I guess I'll have to try a few different things in situ, but this serves as a starting/reference point. I seem to remember from Facebook you have a B&H Eb sousaphone. Have I got that right??? I wonder whether the UK suppliers of the plastic Kelly mouthpieces would get the stainless steel ones sent across the pond?
@@rftuba that’s right - that was me! I’ve been experimenting with other mouthpieces as well. I’ve spoken to the UK suppliers of Kelly (I work at John Packer Ltd, so have the contact). I also think there’s something hugely special about the Eb sousaphone tone/sound quality!
Thanks Stephen, it is indeed very subtle! I guess we musicians are looking for marginal gains whereas my non-musician wife will probably just say 'why?!'
I have to say as an Eb Bass player I like the Geib sounds best overall, I also hear a slightly better projection from it than the others, a couple of them sounded a bit more nasally when playing the smoother basslines. I might have to look for a Geib mouthpiece, and I kinda want an Eb Sousaphone now LOL
I’ve been playing on a Geib for many years on my Sovereign and Imperial so it might be down to familiarity making things work best for me on this sousaphone! Thanks for listening, I do appreciate other people’s ears and opinions.
Great video! I really like the Kelly mouthpieces! I have used them a bunch on sousaphone gigs. If you have access, I would highly recommend trying the Kelly 24AW (modern rim version of the Bach), the Kelly 18, and the Kelly 50. All of these performed much better on the low notes, and were easier to turn up the volume if necessary.
@@rftuba Thank you. Yes, 4 valve King EEb. Unfortunately, due to financial issues, I had to sell it last month 😔 Maybe I can afford another one in the future. I would love an EEb sousaphone page. They are great instruments.

Thanks Zach, maybe I can get an endorsement from Schilke!
Those geibs are amazing
I like the sound of Geib
Thanks Mat
That Kellyburg plastic mouthpiece doesn't sound too bad with the sousa! But the Schilke Geib still comes out on top, imo 😉
Yep, the Kellyburg ain’t that bad!! I think some people can be a bit snobby about plastic.
Nice sousaphone sound!!!!

@@tomfrancombe4767 Eb rules 😀 Please do let me know if you get anywhere with the Kelly metal mouthpieces.
Fantastic playing. I think they all sound great; I think I'm hearing a very subtle more lively/twangy sound from the Geib mps than the Helleburgs
Thanks Stephen, it is indeed very subtle! I guess we musicians are looking for marginal gains whereas my non-musician wife will probably just say 'why?!'
The GEIB projects betters and has a more resonant sound than the others. I’m sure you can feel it in your toes when you plug the Geib in.
Yep, no matter what I try the Geib seems to be my perfect partner!
The Geib is bigger and fuller than the others. Not only that, but it sounds like it might be more efficient.
Thanks Wayne, I think that's what I think to, I think 🤪 I certainly don't have to work so hard with the Geib.

What mouthpiece is best for you
Schilke Geib works best for me …. I think……. But I’ve recently bought something new so may need to do another trial video!
