I'm widowed and live alone so I would say 90% of my meals are cooked in my toaster oven. I have no problem using my full size oven, but it's just easier and more efficient to use the toaster oven. Pretty much, as long as what I'm roasting fits on the pan the oven came with, I'm using it.
You can get other stuff such as 1/4 size sheet trays and small muffin pans that are sized to fit a toaster oven as well.
@@jase_allen totally know on my end, but thank you for adding that.
Regardless of what I'm making, if it's just for me, I start to question myself if I need to use my full size oven 😂
I only use my regular oven for Thanksgiving turkey. Even use the toaster oven for pies. Mine holds a 13x9 pan.
@@infin1ty850 Yes, and add in oven pre-heat and cool down times and costs, it can add up. Toaster ovens are very good for us "live alone's". I am so cheap I still use a toaster oven that my sister gave me around 1998. It still works which is more than I can say for myself. Retired quite a while back :)
@@jase_allen the VAST majority of toaster ovens don't fit a quarter sheet pan.
breville air fryer oven is the only one for breville (afaik) - and isn't a very good toaster fwiw
More episodes/recipes like this please. A lot of us are looking for easier recipes with fewer ingredients.
I bought this Breville toaster oven on ATK review, family of 2 and haven't used my stove ONCE since! Love it
Same here! The only time in the past 5 years that I used my big oven was when I made cookies. Otherwise, it's the Breville for everything.
I have found a decent toaster oven to be the single most used kitchen appliance I have.
Toasting, broiling, baking, roasting, re-heating, etc.
The main advantage is convenience -- toaster ovens are placed on the counter at waist or shoulder height. There's no need to bend over, to use it (great for old geezers).
Mine's bigger than that & has the advantage of convection, and I use it for nearly everything my main oven can make. I'm 75, and not bending to lift is a big plus, but I assume it uses a lot less energy as well. Less to clean as well. The advantage my big oven has is it reaches 500°, which I need/prefer for pizza and some breads.
I also use a toaster oven for almost everything (except large sheet pans, etc.) because it's so much easier, as you say... no need to bend and lift.
The fact that they sit on the countertop, at waist or shoulder height is a HUGE convenience (you can put a platform underneath the oven, to raise it above counter height, if you like).
Honestly, a modular/collapsible kitchen system could be based on a toaster oven, a couple of countertop induction burners, and a few clever 'nesting' tables with wheels on the legs.
Mind sharing the brand, model of oven you use? Thank you in advance! 🤗
@@What.The.Fluff. I use an Oster with French doors; I've had it quite a while, so I'm not sure if it's still made. But i mention the doors because it would be easiest to search for it online if you mention them. It's been a real workhorse. Edit: a return on my search: www.google.com/search?q=oster+countertop+oven+french+doors&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&client=safari (I have the digital, but analog is fine, too.)
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 Ooh, nice setup you're envisioning for us! (I don't need the platform. One of my major peeves in life is that kitchen counters are too tall for my short self. I end up using a separate work table that's a more comfortable height for actual working.)
@@jvallas I appreciate your quick response! Thanks again! 💐
I've been using my toaster oven in place of my regular oven for most things for years. It's more convenient, faster to pre-heat, doesn't use as much energy, and it doesn't heat up the whole house.
Now I have two easy, delicious recipes to try at home. Thank you!
I've been cooking meals in my toaster oven for about 25 years, from roast chicken and roast beef and roast pork, rotisserie chicken and pork, to stuffed peppers, lasagne and just about anything that will fit in it. Which is just about anything smaller than a turkey. How is this even a surprise to anyone today?
Love Joe's recipes and the enthusiasm he brings to cooking and finding new techniques! I've referred back to the kombucha video quite a few times recently since I'm prepping to start making kombucha this weekend. Can't tell y'all how much I've appreciated all the work, reviews, and recipes that ATK has put out over the years, and this video is no exception!
thank you so much! let me know how the kombucha goes, best of luck!
@@josephgitter You're most welcome! Got it started with a new scoby, so we're still in early stages yet. Can't wait for that tart and sparkly first sip, though!

I am having my kitchen remodeled, set up my kitchen in the garage. The Breville Oven is my main cooking item and I am so going to make the kim chi chicken sandwiches! Thx More Joe please!
Hello Joe with the delightful English accent! I love your recipes to make food easier with less steps and dishes! I would make both those dishes, except for the kimchi[cant take the heat]. Every time i see you cooking becomes more streamlined and much easier. Thank you!
I had a simple toaster oven in my student apartment over 30 years ago and used to make full meals for up to six people in it.
The addition of an inexpensive countertop induction burner(s) would make the other half of a perfect student apartment kitchen, or other people who might have limited space.
More, please!
Loved this video! Would love to see more videos from this chef!
Looks delicious! Thank you 🥰
They look delicious!! Thank you for sharing your wonderful recipes with us. Have a blessed day.
I bought a Breville in 2015 and only use my large oven for storage. Soon after getting the Breville a friend’s microwave needed to be replaced so I gave mine to him. Haven’t missed it.
Thank you, Joe!
I love this video and am most interested in both!!! Would love to see Joe do toaster oven vs convection microwave!
This awesome 👏🏾 I only use a toaster ovens. This is very helpful and I hope to see more of theses videos 😊
Just ordered the book. I'm a huge fan of that model of toaster oven! I use it several times a week and rarely use my large oven anymore.
These look delicious!
I love the Toaster Oven cookbook!
made the Ziti tonight, it was delicious, and very easy.
i bet that ziti would be good with some of those toasted panko crumbs going on top before it goes under the broiler
Seeing as he is a professional cook. He probably knows this, duh!! Do it when you make it. 😅

Excellent! Lots of cooking is easier in the toaster oven & it uses way less energy for people who want that. I use mine everyday (no microwave)!
Now I understand your love for kombucha. Fermented drinks and fermented food…I detect a theme here! I will definitely make the chicken sandwiches and the baked ziti and because I often air fry chicken tenders, I also add a little flour to my egg wash. As you said, it combines a step and works very well. Thanks for more great ideas!
Very instructive for me… !
Love using a toaster oven, usually use it for cooking the meat and will reserve using the full size oven to have multiple racks to roast veggies and potatoes.
I have my toaster oven on metal shelving on my back porch so I can bake in July and August without "baking!"
Another advantage! Even if it's _in_ your house, you'll still get less heat transferred...
The fact that you can easily move it to the back porch is a bonus. You might also find that cooking outside is quite nice in cooler weather... something like rounds of shishkabobs, and beers, on fight night/game night (if you put a TV on the porch, LOL).
Mixing the egg and flour for coating it´s great trick
We use our toaster oven quite a bit (in the colder weather months), including salmon well seasoned with a drip of BBQ sauce on it once a week!
I love baked zitti! I'm going to try this. I use my toaster oven for almost everything. I have even roasted a turkey breast with stuffing. Thanks for sharing this!
it's such a great tool - I use mine at least 5 times a week!
Interesting!
I believe that we have the same toaster oven. That thing is AWESOME! So much so that the house that I’m building now will not have a conventional oven.
You might also like something like a countertop induction burner(s), to go with the toaster oven.
We have used the Breville
For many years now and it’s great
I even use my medium-size toaster oven for years to bake my sandwich (loaf) bread ! (I dunno if large/free-standing breads, such as sourdough boulé, which require extra baking hardware, would fit and bake successfully in toaster ovens [?].)
Another great video from Joe! Was that Breville used to develop the recipes in the cookbook?
They do use their favourite equipment from testing in the test kitchen to monitor durability so that would seem likely.
yes exactly. We did abuse test a variety of recipes using Oster and Black and Decker models.
Was the oven set to 400 on roast for the chicken sandwiches? We just replaced our old Breville with a new one, use them just about every day! Highly recommend.
Hmm... skeptical... despite the claims of 'crispy', I heard nothing when he bit into the sandwich. 🤔 I demand a Chef John style fork test! 😆 #forkdontlie
I would definitely go for the ziti...less mess and cleanup. It's basically a one-pot meal. If I feel like going to two pots, I might get fancy and add some Italian sausage or ground beef browned with onion and garlic. I think the fully-cooked meat could be added before the last step of adding and broiling the cheese. Thank you for this!
Just made this missing the ricotta and only having that "six cheese blend" that you get in the grocery store, already shredded. Also, I did not add salt. There is salt in the jarred sauce. Conveniently, it takes half a jar of sauce, with half left to make something at another time. It was still delicious, even without the ricotta. I am putting this in my rotation, and I have a new name for it: "Faked Ziti".
@@saraann6852 hahaha that's perfect! I like your idea of adding the meat right at the end so it doesn't overcook.
I haven't roasted a chicken in years. Sam's and Costco are just cheaper than doing it yourself.
We even switched our dog to rotisserie chicken because it's cheaper than premium dog food.
I would recommend canned chicken for your dog. The brining on the rotisserie chicken is very high in sodium. I have tiny dogs and my vet gave me the advice. I also love the Sam’s rotisserie chicken. So easy and so inexpensive.
@@alyssatheexcellent I second that. Although, even canned chicken should be rinsed off, as it usually has added sodium & other solutions.
You had me at kimchi!
Somebody was hanging out with Sonja Morgan- the queen of toaster cooking!
Ziti for sure. The other is probably too spicy for me these days.
Likely to try the ziti first as pasta is a regular feature at dinner.
I cook almost all our meals in the toaster oven. About all I use the even for is roasting a turkey.
I might use this. I’ll be pleased if Test Kitchen gets to be near the status it used to be.
Use mine all the time. Rarely use my full size oven
Can I use like the air fryer ninja if I don't have a toaster oven. It kinda looks like an oven
For the sandwich, yes. From the recipe: "Adjust toaster oven rack to middle position, select air-fry or convection function, and heat oven to 400 degrees. "
@@sandrah7512 agreed!
I don't even bother with my regular oven any more never worked very well in the first place I use the counter top oven that your testers recommended, I've roast hole chickens, bake banana bread and cookies and pasta dishes like that in it , between that oven and my air fryer the only thing I use is my stove top but I'm only cooking for one person these days and I'm not heating the house up
Does this work as well in a full size oven?
Yes, and in some cases even better (in my experience). Baking is extremely consistent, because of the smaller size (less hot/cold spots inside).
I don't have that particular toaster oven, but you get the idea.
Yes, and it's awesome not to heat the whole kitchen.
(8:13) "So this recipe does work in a conventional oven" Joe Gitter
I wanted a toaster oven/air fryer combo and due to my not reading the description well enough I mistakenly ordered just the toaster oven. It’s a very nice Breville oven but I was so disappointed and boxed it up to return it and order the combo. I’ve never owned an air fryer but after reading several of the comments on this post I’m almost convinced to keep the toaster oven I ordered and just forget about even getting an air fryer. Would some of you give me your thoughts and opinions about this? Please no sarcastic, rude or ugly comments.
I have no experience with an air fryer but my Breville smart oven does everything a single person needs, in my opinion. I bought mine in 2015, use it daily, and it still works as well as ever.
@@FeatnikSFI’ve thought for quite a while that I wanted an air fryer but with very little counter space I thought getting a toaster oven/air fryer combo would be the best option for me. I’ve got a cheap toaster oven that I’ve had for over 20 years and it still works fine. It has the convection oven setting and since I live alone I use it primarily. I don’t even remember the last time I used my big oven. Im just trying to convince myself not to send the Breville 800 I ordered to swap it for the 900 which has the air fryer as well. I’d like to get your thoughts and opinion as to what you would do in this situation? 🙂
Many recipes scale down so they can be prepared in pans small enough to fit in a toaster oven. The bonus: the kitchen doesn’t get as hot in the summer because you are using a smaller oven.
Absolutely!
How do i get receipes
The recipes are in ATK's Toaster Oven Perfection cookbook. The ziti recipe and a slightly different version of the sandwich are also on their website. But Joe pretty much gave you the instructions for both in the video which has the option of captions and there's a link to the video transcript provided.
Good video; Jaimie Oliver just took a lot of flak for promoting air fryers! In a small kitchen I'd prefer a toaster oven.
A decent toaster oven is far more useful than an air fryer. I have both, as well as a regular oven.
I use the toaster oven 99% of the time.
Wow.... ❤❤❤
I bought the book and the ziti recipe is not in it. Why would you do that ? Can you please provide it?

What’s the point of toasting the breadcrumbs to remove any marginal hydration if you’re just going to add liquid to the batter (kimchi brine) anyways?
No seasoning on the chicken?

Not sure I've seen a toaster oven in about 21 years.
Another great video from Joe! Crack on!
To clarify, these are recipes developed on and for a $300 Breville Smart Oven. You will NOT get comparable results with the $50 Cuisinart or Black & Decker most people have.
This or an air fryer?
An air frier is just a compact convection oven, so if you have a toaster oven with convection, use that. If not and you have an air frier, use that.
I personally prefer a toaster oven since it's more verisitle, but I would never buy or the other if I already I own one of them.
Or a pressure cooker with an air fryer lid.
Get a decent toaster oven for $100-$300.
Don't even consider the air fryer. I have both. The toaster oven is a 'Swiss army knife', in the kitchen.
This particular Breville has a convection setting. It also can be used as a slow cooker.
@@johnharper257 Yup. I'm not sure which model this is, but I have a Breville with the same settings. I'm pretty sure this is just a more recent model of what I have, and if that's the case, it's the great.
The ziti was in for 40 minutes to cook. Then another 6 to melt the cheese. Then another 10 to cool. The math isn’t mathing here.
I’d rather make Ziti.
OK I own a Breville toaster oven, I love it BUT this is not it. This is the Breville Mini Oven difference in price about $160.00. No convection and much smaller, a quarter sheet pan will not fit in the toaster oven.
I have that exact same toaster oven, thanks to a review ATK did a few years ago. I absolutely love it; it was a little expensive but worth every penny!
Great stuff as always Joe, but what’s “pahh-stahh”?
Maybe no one told you he's not from the U.S. Not everyone is, hard as that is to imagine. I feel pretty confident you know what he said. Edit: I'm actually not sure how you feel it should have been pronounced.
@@jvallas lol relax, Joe and I are friendly and he knows I’m just ribbing him
They are fun till you try to clean them.
Wait, isn’t this the vegan guy?
Well, he worked on ATK's vegan cookbook and their plant-based cook book, their plant-based meat book, their healthy drinks book, toaster oven book, cocktails book, Chinese cookbook and many others because his "day job" (aka real job when not on starring in an ATK UA-cam series) is editing and developing recipes as part of ATK's books team. This series kind of highlights an ATK books team test cook's journey.
@@sandrah7512 thanks so much for the thoughtful and helpful reply! Nice to see behind the curtain.
is a toaster oven just a crappy airfryer?
A airfryer is a crappy toaster oven : )
Air fryer is just a one dimensional convection oven
No, it surpasses air fryers.
No, depending on the size it can be more versatile.
You have it backwards. A decent toaster oven is a Swiss army knife, in the kitchen. An air fryer is a small, crappy toaster oven that only does one thing.
good recipes felt like an infomercial at times though. FRYING IS SO MESSY *clang clang clang* DOES THIS EVER HAPPEN TO YOU? *makes face at camera*
just cook the food, choombata
I can't afford a $200 toaster oven when I have a full size paid for oven. I promise you aren't doing serious cooking in the cheap toaster oven I do have.
Toaster ovens at home seem pointless to me. Useful at the office though.
In my experience, I use the toaster oven 99% of the time... not my conventional oven.
Theories are one thing, and practice is sometimes different.
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 I had a toaster oven but hardly ever used it except for cheese on toast.
Kimchi? Who in fraq has Kimchi on hand?
Lots of people do nowadays, in Canada anyway. It is mainstream like siracha or mayo
Why does this guy sound so SURPRISED that this countertop OVEN cooks chicken?🤷♂️ That's what they are made to do🙄
Love Joe, but that British pronunciation of "pasta" makes my left eye twitch. lol
Could you achieve similar results if you used an air fryer instead?
With the sandwich, yes - it's the same method. Dip the chicken in seasoned flour-egg mixture, then pre-toasted breadcrumbs (I do mine on the stove, but they can also be done in the microwave).
