    • World War 2 1945 GMC 6...
    This Bantam Shield crane has been sitting for over 8 years! Will it start? If it starts will it run and operate? Let's find out!
    This truck and I are beginning to have a painful history!
    The truck is a General Motors 1945 World war two era 6X6. Also known as a cckw353 former military surplus truck made into a crane. Sitting atop is a Bantam model T35 crane. We call this rig "War Baby." The crane has a 4 cylinder gas powered Leroi engine. The crane is currently equipped with an orange peel bucket for digging 4 foot diameter water wells. Come along on the tour! #gmc #generalmotors #ww2history #GMC #cranes #vintagemachinery #earthmover #crane #heavyequipment #coloradohistory #willitstart #willitrun

    I had a 1942 GMC 1-1/2 ton 4x4 dually and a tank retriever crane on the back end. Unfortunately the truck engine didn't run when I got it and it sat at my Mechanic's house for a couple of months before he got a chance to take a good look at it and determined that we needed ALOT of sheet metal work because all the cab mounts were rusted away and the cab was in bad shape and the engine needed alot. We moved inside my garage a few miles away and it sat there for about a year until I decided not to pursue restoration and another friend who collected military trucks took it.
    He started working on it but got sick and couldn't finish it and unfortunately passed away..
    I don't know what happened to the truck because it was apart with piece's all over

    It was made by The Shield Bantam Co. in Waverly, Iowa. The Shield Brothers sold it to Koehring Cranes in I believe 1963. There were Lorain cranes made there also. Northwest Engineering acquires the assets of Koehring and acquires the assets of Terex Corp. through a merger it was renamed Terex Corp. On July 19,2016 Terex closed the plant effective immediately.

    Excellent 👌
    Near salt water these are ruined from rust.
    We spray oil on everything with fruit sprayer drain oil plus kerosene mix.
    Not on friction areas
    Old timers taught me how to run Lorain and PH clamshell cranes.
    Ps I made head gaskets out of thin copper sheet on old boat motor.

    That was a hoot ! If the drums are different sizes or if one drum has more cable on it then the other drum has they will be out of time so it’s the skill of the operator that would be able to work it without losing the load or if one drum has to much slack on the cable it won’t reeve up right on the drum and it will be what we would call a bird’s nest and if you get a kink in the cable it will stay there unless you take the cable off and straighten the kinks a cable straightener is easy to make but it’s better if you don’t kink it but you might want to take a paint pen and write on each lever what it does even which way the throttle works less chance of a accident.
    You should ask your Grandpa if it has power load lowering on the boom hoist lever if not it’s kinda tricky to lower it and I would raise and lower it on low idle so it doesn’t run away but loved watching this video it’s right up my ally sorry you fell I have done that a few times myself it’s no fun 😀🇨🇦

  • @SuperMAZ007
    @SuperMAZ007 5 місяців тому +6

    I wanna hear the truck start. Id dose look like it will run. The cab looks on good shape one whisky dent in the back I could see from the video. But the roof has not been caved in so it dose not looks like a seabed. The one major dent I did see is on the hood but that can be fixed. For as old as it is. It is still in very mint condition. The reason why I wanna hear it run is back in WW 2. USA send thousands of these trucks into the Soviet union as war aid to fight against the Axis power. How many Cubic's per square inch dose the crane engine have? To me it looks like a 2 liter engine? The wasps nest looks like typical yellow jackets, these things have open nests and they are just ferocious and annoying to deal with.

    • @lifeafterourloss
      @lifeafterourloss  5 місяців тому +3

      This truck is definitely in better shape than the other one. I'm not exactly sure what cubic inch that engine is. I imagine it is very close to it 2.3 ro 2.8 l. It's hard to find information on it and I can't find parts for it either. I know that at some point Allis Chalmers bought out Leroi engines.

      My understanding is Allis Chalmers bought out Leroi engines. If I could find a head gasket I would like to get the cable backhoe running.

      Would a Allis Chalmers WD or D17 head gasket work or are they different? I think WD is a 201 and D17 is a 226. How many cubic inch is the one you have?

      I'm going to go out and look for the book for the machine. Got to thinking about it last night. Then hopefully I can nail down the cubic inch. I suspect you're correct knowing that Allis Chalmers bought out Leroi engines. They probably used that same engine. I'll check it out later today.

    Yes you should try to start the truck. I see the cat fairly often but have only seen Buddy once. Is he still around?

      Buddy is still around. He does not like the cold weather, 😂. Buddy was out when I drove the Twenty Two around. I think we'll try and start the truck when we get some warm weather this spring. 👍

    Awesome video!
    I really enjoy watching old machines at work.

    Mostly made of wood.

      I've always found well drilling methods fascinating. I remember an episode of Little House on the Prairie from my youth. The character played by Victor French was drilling a well a horse drawn boring machine. I imagine it was just like the one you have. Even as a child I found it fascinating. The orange peel bucket on our machine was used to dig 4 ft diameter water wells. I have a separate video outlining the process. 👍

      @lifeafterourloss one of my neighbors has a pounding well machine attached to a model T truck. I'm not too sure how it works, but it looks like it has like a transfer case from the transmission.

    They have abandoned drag lines all over the USA I don't think people realize just how efficient these machines were/still are as steel cabling was a revolutionary idea "back in the Day"(history of the Brooklyn Bridge) and definitely single handed created what today is the global mining business. Talk about high quality steel! Interesting how given World War 2 when steel was rationed Industry still found a way to make such high quality machinery so very much a tribute to the engineering of the time especially Detroit in particular but most famous be New Jersey by way of Pittsburgh. One look at those tires says "World War 2" as well very high quality rubber back in the day...which also was revolutionary for the time ... and as with steel rationed as well. Even fuel was rationed back in those days actually. Talk about having to think through engine and power train design! I don't think there are any hydraulics with this as well as hydraulics had not been invented yet 1945 or if invented not capable of being mass produced anyways. Interesting use of concrete as well. Did have pneumatics at this time tho. Out west everything used dynamite tho...when not using Roman Fire anyways. What's really great about World War 2 Era equipment is usually came with a manual actually. Find that for this would make for some interesting reading material would be an understatement.
