  • This is a tutorial on making clay tiles to use for mosaics. Fun and easy to do. I use mostly Sculpey and Paper Clay to make my tiles.You can use paints, H2O's, stamps, beads, jewels, paper, anything you want to decorate your mosaic pieces that you create...Make sure you read package directions for baking times and temps. I also cover my baking pans with foil or use double pans and clip the sides together. Always cool your tiles before painting.
    Please give me a thumbs up and subscribe if you enjoyed this video. Thank you so much for watching! xo

    Absolutely loved your video. I have just discovered polymer clay and at age 57 I am having an absolute blast! I am about to become unemployed through no fault of my own and I am going to see if I can do some craft fairs as I continue to learn from all the great videos. I just started making tiles to eventually do a mosaic.....I wish I had discovered this year's ago...but I'm just enjoying it now. Thanks Rita for posting your videos, your enthusiasm is so very catching! All the best!

It's nice to have a bunch to play with because you can never have too many. lol Enjoying yourself is the most important part of creating and it sounds like you are. Good luck to you I hope you sell tons… XOXO

    Wow...wow...wow! I have Laurie Mika’s book, too. I started out actually calling myself an artist doing mosaics. I’ve done a little bit of everything.I see some like or similar pieces on yours as on mine. I made “God boxes” for my church sisters plus my first exhibit was mosaics. I have so wanted to get into these tiles but have never found the time. I’ve done a million crosses. Love the heart box! You are giving me some inspiration, too! I have yet to find my box of clay since we first moved!

    Rita - Love your tile projects. I'm addicted to Laurie's book and process too. Do you remember what that sheets of the small white porous tiles was called? I checked the website but there are so many choices, I wasn't sure which they were. Thanks so much.

    • @RitaMarieArt
      @RitaMarieArt  9 років тому +1

      Hi Patti..I just checked at witsendmosaic.com and mosaicartsupply.com and they have unglazed tile, and that is what I believe I got from them. You can always check Home Depot and see if they have the sheets there. I think I bought some there too, and also any tile store you may have near you. The big chunky ones I had gotten from an interior decorator friend of mine who was closing up her shop...she must have gotten them from a tile store. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching and commenting Patti!

    Cool work! I love hearts, can you tell me, do you leave the foil inside the heart permanently?

    • @RitaMarieArt
      @RitaMarieArt  8 років тому +2

      +Elizren Hi Elizren! Yes, I leave the foil in for the little hearts, the only time I take it out is if I am cutting to make a heart box. Then I usually mold the heart over the foil and then cut around the sides so when it is baked I can separate the top from the bottom and pull the foil out. This way you have a heart box and can put little legs on it after you decorate it. I showed them in the video. I hope this info helps. Thank you so much for commenting… Love to you… xoxo

  • @honey562012
    @honey562012 8 років тому +2

    This may have already been asked but I didn't read previous comments. My question is why do you use the foil inside the clay to make the heart? Couldn't you just form the hear shape without it? Thanks for sharing. I will make some of those tiles because I wanted to get back into doing mosaics and couldn't find the colors when looking at plates but aking my own tiles should keep the cost down. De'

    • @RitaMarieArt
      @RitaMarieArt  5 років тому +1

      honey562012 You can just use clay to form the shape and I do that a lot too, but you use more clay that way. If you make the form with the foil you use less but either way is good. Thanks for watching and commenting. 💜😊

    I've just started experimenting with making tiles and I'm using sculpty clay and following the directions for baking and I can't get my tiles to harden, they stay a little too soft. I'm baking in a small toaster oven. What am I doing wrong.

    • @RitaMarieArt
      @RitaMarieArt  8 років тому

      Hi Doreen! Try leaving them in a little longer, it really depends on how thick you make them. I find sometimes I need to keep mine in the toaster oven longer then when i use my kitchen oven. You just have to make sure you don't burn them. Let me know if that helps. Love & Hugs to you XO

    does it take a long time for the acrylic pro to dry? do you do the transfers of your art from copies or original? sorry just one more question, can you transfer onto paper clay or can you only use the regular type of clay? I understand that when you get the paper clay wet it will be movable is that correct? I guess that was two more questions haha.
    thank you.
    smilz

    • @RitaMarieArt
      @RitaMarieArt  10 років тому +1

      Hi Ronda,
      The Acrylic Pro drys pretty quickly depending on how thick you make it. I will usually wait an hour or two. I guess you could help it a long with a dryer. You really don't need that much on the surface. If you put too much it will raise the tiles too high.
      I have transferred onto paper clay and the Sculpey, and also the store bought tiles with the porous surface. I always use copies of my work made from my inkjet printer. There is also special paper you can purchase to print on that is just for inkjet transfers. Check online I can't remember if any of the craft stores sell it but check Michaels and if you have a Hobby Lobby near you.
      I use good quality HP or Epson inkjet presentation paper 32lbs... I get from Staples. The paper is very white and the colors come out fantastic. Card stock does not work for me. Another thing I do, is wait a few hours for the ink to settle on the paper and dry before I transfer.
      Depending on which kind of paper clay you use, some will say you can add water and some will be used as is right out to the package.
      Something I never tried and you might want to try, is putting a transfer on glass tiles. I think that would be lovely, and I just might try that next. ;)
      I hope I answered all of your questions... let me know if you have other questions I can help answer for you.
      Thank you for the comment...I hope you enjoyed the video and you are now inspired to make beautiful mosaic pieces of art. xo
