if he had his legs crossed in the air he could have quadrupled that lutz it was so high!!
Don Jackson inspired an entire generation of skaters. Landing the 1st Triple Lutz in competition, incredible footwork, sculped edges, and 'delayed' jumps - which they frown on today! The focus has completely changed these days. Yes, the jumps are more difficult because of increased numbers of revolutions, but at what cost? Don was the 'package', artistry, form and athleticism. +50 years on and we don't see his like often these days, if at all.
I love that they still at least do delayed jumps and other purely lovely things in exhibition.
I was impressed by his rotations left and right in the jumps. I´m not a skater but I know in ballet that´s not a big deal. In figureskating today I think it is. Right?
Yes, jumping in both directions is so difficult and Don did it with such ease.
He actually originally skated with my club,, he came back a few years ago.. i think for his 70th birthday, i met him and he did a performance on our ice... it was amazing to see a man of his age do what he did.. he was a bit wobbly of course but nobody cared :)
Unbelievable grace, power and stamina! I could not believe he scheduled and performed a triple jump so far into that long program. Elegance personified. Bravo. I am proud to wear your companies skates Mr. Jackson.

Amazing..he jumped from either direction, delayed jumps. Remember also that skates and boots were not up to today's standard, nor so supportive. He was incredibly strong.
The height on that Lutz is just ridic. He's doing crazy transitions before crazy transitions were a thing!
Theres something mesmerizing about the way he moves.. The ease.. and just the intelligence he has in the way he moves his body. Very stylish and uplifting. :) Lovely man, in and out.
Hi did 20 jumps in his program. I can't get over the height on that triple lutz. Exciting to see this clip.
This is the highest triple lutz I've ever seen. Even nowaday skaters can't do that jump as high as he did. Well done!!!

Donald was such a natural skater and humility always came with him. I think he might have been the first "modern skater" who combined athleticism with art. He set the standard for many Canadian men's world champions who followed.
An exhsusting 5:00 long program opening with a brilliant deep outside edge 3Lutz, jam packed with jumps in both directions, a 3Salchow in the last minute, great spins, great footwork, transitions in and out of every element and ... he is not even winded ... crazy good 👍👏👏👏👏👏👏

This guy is amazing! I had never seen his performances but what a revolution in technique from Dick Button in 1948 to Don Jackson in 1962. I think if he were competing today, he could be World Champion again. I keep admiring his technique and especially his landings from his magnificent jumps. All too often we see skaters land jumps before they can stop their rotation, Don lands them on edge and continues his routine flawlessly. I am very impressed!
Donald had one of the best free programs of all time and an action packed full 5 minutes long!
Jackson's performance here is probably the greatest-ever by a skater. Minus the quads of today but had he needed them to win, he surely would have learned to do them. You only rise to the level of necessity.
The second judge from the right scored Jackson 5.8 both for technical and for artistry -- the lowest scores of all the judges. I'm guessing he was a Soviet bloc judge intent on giving the nod to the Czech skater.
The focus is different today, but you got to admit he did some very creative and entertaining things out there. He jumped high enough to do quads, but quads weren't in yet. This routine kept moving and it was long. He was in very good shape. And to think they also had to do compulsories back then.
If you do less rotations you can jump higher more easily generally speaking.

Yup. You read my mind. 60% of our scores back then were based on compulsory figures that people are unaware of now.
Great speed and some unusual field moves. The jump out of the spin was brilliant. This performance holds up and feels exciting. Also I think this is a 5 minute program, today the long is only 4 min 10 seconds. There is a purity and beauty in this performance that is not evident today. Clean uncluttered. No phony or pretentious emoting and preening.

I still can't get used to skaters landing on their left feet than their right feet.I also love those old rinks and how people could sit right at the edges.One of the practice rinks in Lake Placid is like that.

Did you see the fast footwork ? ... the delayed double salchow ? The inside axle ? The special position of the arms in jumps ... the one foot axle ? the jump... i believe a double salchow out of a spin ? the amazing speed of the spins ? WE DONT SEE THIS ANYMORE... He is a unique and fanstastic skater !

Thank you so much for this posting. I am glad to see the entire program, which was really spectacular, not just the jumps but wonderful spins also. I believe Torvill and Dean got all 6's in their Olympic performance. I miss the 6. They killed the sport with the new scoring system. I also miss Dick Button and Jim McKay. Wonderful comments and they also knew when no comments were necessary.

Barry M. Right on! ABC Wide World of Sports with Jim McKay was TV's quintessential sports presentation. No other network even came close. Dick Button wasn't normally effusive about a performance unless it was highly deserving. In fact he could be highly critical of skaters who didn't give their best. Here Dick demonstrates his superior analytical broadcast skills, unequaled since that generation. Jackson and Button both rank in the top 5 of the greatest-ever men's figure skaters.
In roller figure skating we still use this type of a system and it’s killing the sport. IJS MAY NOY be perfect, but it places people and judges them by an exact standard. It rewards and deducts appropriately for both strength and artistry.

he's a coach at one of one of our rival clubs, in the same city. so i've skated on the same ice numerous times with him before and met him several times.
@starstruckvenus13 No, the next triple lutz in competition was 12 years later in 1974 by Jan Hoffmann. 20 years later, in 1982, triple lutzes were commonplace by then and you could probably see about 10 or a dozen done in a World or European Championships and by that time some men were doing triple axels. First triple axel in competition was 1978 by Vern Taylor.
The next triple lutz at a major competition was actually landed by Hungarian Laszlo Vajda who skated in an earlier group at the same competition 1974 European Figure Skating Championships. Jan Hoffman landed one as well at that competition in a later group.
Many years ago I had the pleasure of having Don Jackson, Marilyn Thompson (coach of Lynn Nightingale) and the late Ossie Colson as coaches for a one week provincial skating seminar I was in charge of. One evening when we were done for the day a group of us were sitting around after the skaters had retired having a good chin wag. It was during this chat Mr. Colson made a comment along these lines: "Give me a male skater who is slightly bow legged and jumps clockwise and I'll give you a world champion" to which Don Jackson replied, "I've heard that before from my coach" who was none other than the late Sheldon Galbraith to which Mr. Colson responded with, "I rest my case."
Wonderful performance paved the way for today’s skating
Wow! Talk about coming full circle. I watched this on ABC television in the cornfields of Illinois, and then spent a lifetime skating. I remember thinking of this moment when I landed my first double lutz (never managed triples). My coach used to teach that straight line swerve into a lutz. I wonder if Don was coached by Gus Lussi, as he was.
He started with Otto Gold in CN. Lussi got him later.

A great performance, even harder to jump back then because they were not taught to cross legs in jumps like today. Yes, Don's marks have been bettered since - the highest marks ever in figure skating were given to, who else, but Torvill & Dean in 1984 Worlds.

I was also struck by the small rink size. Did skaters know ahead of time how big the ice sheet would be? He almost junps out of the rink a few times. When were hockey boards invented?

He had enough height for three revolutions for almost EVERY double-revolution jump including double Axels! He almost finished rotating when reaching the highest position. His rotation was fast enough actually.
"...into a jump!" always makes me laugh. I'm not sure why. Dick is always such an animated speaker.
@ StewNWT - RE: Shen and Zhao, they don't score using the same grading system as they did in Don's time.They are given points for jumps, spins, overall program difficulty and artistry etc., and the points are tallied.
The ISU Judging System replaced the previous 6.0 system in 2004. There are no 5.9s or 6s anymore, nor were there for Shen and Zhao's performance.

It's interesting how skaters back in the days were able to do the difficult doubles and triples without crossing their legs in the air. Dick Button did cross his legs for his 2axels and 3loop though.

⛸️ That's the point. In 1962 NO ONE had done a triple lutz. It's the 2nd most difficult jump (after the axel) because the skater jumps in the opposite direction from his/her comfort zone AND the takeoff is from a back outside edge and landing on the back outside edge of the opposite foot.
Training in the 21st century is nothing like what it was in 1962. To begin with, the skates used today are nothing like the ones in 1962. Weight, materials and blades are totally different; which impacts every element of a skater's performance.
These days figure skaters augment their stamina and skill-set by incorporating ballet, fitness trainers etc. None of that existed for skaters back then. There is no comparing Nathan Chen to Don Jackson. The field wouldn't be equal. AND Nathan Chen didn't have to perfect compulsory figures (stopped in 1991), which were a huge element in a skater's overall performance score.
It wasn’t until 16 years later, 1978, that Swiss skater Denise Biellman (for whom the 'Biellman spin' is named), performed the 1st women's 3-lutz. A quad-lutz wasn't performed until 49 years after Don Jackson did his, when Jason Mroz performed the quad in 2011. ⛸️

Don Jackson is a Knight of Canada KC of My generation as a Biology professor at University of Toronto as My Graduate Thesis Supervisor for My PhD. This is likely his relative as Don Jackson the Knight of Canada of King George so a Knight of King George of the previous generation of Royals of Canada. This Don Jackson looks similar to My Thesis Supervisor but with the old film it is difficult to tell. We need to look for the Don Jackson Knights to make sure all 3 generations of King James and King George and King Robert of 1968 of Canada are okay. As Olympic Athletes they are targets all of the Canadian Athletes and American Athletes. Olympic Security and Athlete
