how come u never played Blasphemous 2 ? the second game is a much easier recommendation than the first game solid gameplay too (pick the Ruega Alba and play it like hack n slash). your dash have i-frames but u can animation cancel it any time with jump, which you have full height/air control with crisp rresponsiveness, and you can cancel ur jump with air dash(i-frames as well) etc skip landing animation of free fall if you cancel your fall height with air dash or double jump leading to satisfying traversal since each weapon have their mobility utility during platforming etc . and string combos too with the one of the three weapon. Incredible music, really well paced engaging level design/platforming, Solid metroidvania map, Masterclass pixel art, intriguing story. it is a surprise that you havent reviewed it yet.
For this being their first game, this is insane!!! They understood the assignment very well, indeed. This is proof that the formula is not the problem, people never grew tired of these types of games and graphics. Many companies just seemed to have forgotten how to creatively use them. Every game doesn't need to be 50GB in order to be fun.
It's roughly "geshtalt" where the g is pronounced as in "gas" and the a as in "harvest", but short. Stress the second syllable and you should be good to go.
Been looking foward to this game for a while, glad it's finally out and looks good. Got it on steam already, gonna play it later on when i have some free time
I looked through your video and thought it was an interesting concept but then checked Steam reviews and some other content creators and to be fair their opinion is much different, did your thoughts of the game keep the same through the whole playthrough?
Have you played Ultros? It's an amazing metroidvania, made by the people behind hotline miami, that came out a few months ago now and was hoping to see you play it
I am having fun with it. Bo the whatever metroidvania is next. After Biomorph, The Last Faith, and Gestalt, I would be 100% ok with not having a collect 20+ items related to a "quest" all over the various areas in metroidvanias. Hollow Knight did it, and the reward structure and character/lore expressed in it made it great. These games not so much. I do think this game handles stagger better than Ender Lilies did, though, which is nice.
I know it's irrelevant to this video but just finished Worldless and want to recommend the game. It's a Metroidvania(ish?) with beautiful art and great platforming challenge. Despites some flaws (and a unsatisfying ending lol) I still find it enjoyable. And thank you for introducing me to Nine Sols! Really enjoy your reviews on games please keep doing it.
Looks like a good game, but i wish you said anything about the things you didnt like about the game. That kind of information helps a lot in a sponsored review.
I was really excited to play Gestalt: Steam and Cinder, because it looks like it has all the elements of a great metroidvania game. I love the art style, the music, and the steampunk setting. But after watching this review, I’m really disappointed to hear that it’s so linear. One of my favorite things about metroidvania games is the freedom to explore and the sense of discovery that comes with it. I’m not sure it’s going to be worth it for me if that’s missing from Gestalt.
Honestly many MVs these days simply are too narrative driven to not be relatively linear and also just not large enough to really allow for much freedom in the way Hollow Knight did for example. The only other recent examples I can think of are Blasphemous I (II to a lesser extent as it gets rather linear in the second half, B1 is rather clunky though), Haak (lacks a lot in narrative, combat and visual variety) and Afterimage (visually stunning to boot but horrendous writing and a little bloated). Games like The Lost Crown and Ori II are rather large and give the illusion of being non-linear but the way areas are locked behind ability upgrades for the most part you really don’t have that much freedom as you might think, probably only like 2-3 branches for each of them. A strong, focused narrative just seems to be what most developers are going for these days but that obviously makes it much harder to write in non-linear progression and if you go for both you risk bloating your game. There’s also the fact that MVs these days are often developed by indie studios which just can’t afford to go all out in every aspect. Hollow Knight and Blasphemous are really the only ones that do exploring/progression, narrative, visuals all at least decently well while being fairly large games that don’t offer much bloat. All other great recent MVs are rather linear but have a sharp focus and execute it extremely well (Ori 2, TLC, Nine Sols, Bo etc)
Why are all the latest side-scrolling RPGs linear? I care not about platforming or combat by themselves, I care about exploration first and foremost. The last and only sidescroller that scratched the itch for me was Hollow Knight. ESA and La-Mulana are too obtuse, the rest either don't feel as a cohesive world, or are too linear.
Can you consider talking normally instead of ending every sentence with an emphasised sing song tone, its really not all that necessary to maintain an engaging commentary.
@@fireb0rn The high pitch upspeak at the end makes it sound like every sentence is a question and it's completely opposite to the points being discussed. Enjoy being a mediocre orator forever I guess 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah, sorry no. I tried the demo, and it was just... disappointingly shallow and tedious. It wasn't fun, and the narrative, as far as I saw, was terribly "Tell, not show". Like yeah, maybe the full game is better than the demo, but the demo was bad, and I doubt that it's gotten much better with a full release.
Lol are you aware that a demo can be very different from the actual game? I guess you're insinuating that Fireborne just lied about really liking the game?
A mediocre game, the moves of heroine are okay, boss fights are decent, but the scenario performing is very boring, just long and boring text, without any excitement.
I would say really underwhelming. Music is good and so is the pixel art but there's nothing crazy about it. Setting is generic and it clings hard to an uninteresting story only to end in a cliffhanger. Combat isn't bad either, you have the standard Metroidvania abilities with no deviation from what anyone who's played the genera knows by head. Double jump, dash, bla bla bla. The game is also really easy and there's little to collect in an uninspired map design. The ONE thing I like about the game was its emphasis on the gun and using it in combat, for once a gun isn't useless in these kind of games but at the same time it feels overpowered. I 100% the game in 6 hours with 2 deaths, this is no SotN or Axiom Verge (One, two sucks HARD). It's not even Blasphemous. It's just a painfully average game devoid of flavor or ideas. Rescuing dogs for collectibles/money is also really silly and doesn't bode well with me in a game that seems to desperately wants the player to take it seriously. edit: oh yeah and I also really liked the fact you had to use the camera to look around for once, at least until you got the maps that showed everything and completely trivialized exploration and it's pretty retard that you get to see which kind of abilities you're gonna get the moment you drop your first upgrade. i mean it's not rocket science to hide abilities you still can't get behind a fog of war
@@rudranshjoshi8142 Considering that critics tend to give higher scores than players, a 68 is not good. But I do see that the most criticized aspect is the narrative, not the gameplay.

Why are you so generic 😭
Guess I've been pronouncing the word 'gestalt' incorrectly all my life

Didn't Fire seek out the sponsorship himself because he was already sold on the game? Maybe I misunderstood.

Gestalt has a hard G sound. It's a German word. And unlike the word "German," it doesn't make a J noise.
